Active Monsoon to lash East India with heavy rains

September 7, 2016 9:15 AM | Skymet Weather Team

The Southwest Monsoon continues to be active over most parts of East India. All thanks to the low pressure area persisting over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas.

In wake of this, several parts of the region are all set to witness heavy rains during the next 24 to 48 hours. Skymet Weather predicts, Bihar and Jharkhand along with parts North Chhattisgarh will witness moderate to heavy rains. Few places are also likely to record very heavy rains.

In wake of this, the region has already started witnessing good showers, which is now expected to further increase. Parts of East Uttar Pradesh will also witness scattered light to moderate showers.

However, with the gradual northwest movement of the low pressure area, the intensity of rain will reduce over parts of West Bengal but good showers will continue over the state.

In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Daltonganj recorded 59 mm of rain, Patna 17 mm, Purnea 13 mm, Gaya 9 mm, Jamshedpur 6 mm, Varanasi 2 mm.

The system has already given some heavy to extremely heavy rains over West Bengal including Kolkata on Monday.

These rains hold great significance for Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh as both the regions are rain deficient by 15% and 12%, respectively. We expect that these fresh spell of good Monsoon rains will improve the situation up large extent.
