Monsoon rains in Gujarat are majorly dependent on the weather systems travelling through Central India towards Gujarat and Rajasthan. As soon as these systems reach Madhya Pradesh, parts of Gujarat start recording rains as the system then starts interacting with the humid winds from Arabian Sea.

However, this had not been the scenario so far. This season, the deficiency had even mounted to over 80% by the end of June. In fact, Saurashtra and Kutch was the worst pocket of the country with rain deficiency of 92%.

However, things started improving with the beginning of July, particularly in the last four days.

Presently, a cyclonic circulation is marked over South Gujarat and till the time, the system will stay put, it will continue to give rains over the region.

Thus, for the last 4 days, several parts of the state have been recording decent rains barring North Gujarat and Kutch region. Particularly, parts of South Gujarat such as Surat and Valsad had seen several bouts of heavy to extremely heavy rains.

In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Diu recorded extremely heavy rains to the tune of 172 mm, followed by Surat 61 mm, Valsad 52 mm, Veraval 47 mm, Baroda 35 mm, Rajkot 25 mm, Idar 23 mm, Amreli 13 mm, Bhavnagar 10 mm, and Porbandar 4 mm.

In wake of these rains, rainfall deficiency across the states has shown a significant improvement. As on July 13, Saurashtra and Kutch region was rain deficit by 56%. Meanwhile, Gujarat was deficit by 5% that too on account of less rainfall in North Gujarat.

In Gujarat region, southern parts such as Surat, Valsad and Navsari are witnessing surplus Monsoon rain, while central areas of the region Ahmedabad, Baroda and Gandhinagar are observing normal or above normal rains. However, northern areas like Deesa and Idar have been highly deficit.

In Saurashtra and Kutch, places like Bhavnagar, Veraval, Kandla, Amreli, Junagarh are witnessing normal or above normal rains. Interior parts such as Jamnagar, Surendranagar, Okha, Porbandar, and Rajkot are on the lower side.

Moving further, we do not expect any changes in the prevailing weather conditions and similar rainfall pattern will follow during the next 24-48 hours. Not only this, more Monsoon rains are in the offing as weathermen predict rain belt to cover almost entire state in the time span of a week or 10 days.

Thus, Gujarat region will soon start witnessing normal or above normal rainfall in the coming days. On the other hand, Saurashtra and Kutch region would see a remarkable improvement in rainfall deficiency.
