Southwest Monsoon has not been too good for the state of Gujarat this year. While some good spells of rains were seen over the state in July, these were not enough to bring down the rainfall deficiency. Right after Southwest Monsoon made an onset over the state, widespread rains have not been a regular feature.
However, the last 24 hours has brought in some good news for the residents. So much so that several areas have witnessed heavy rains including Ahmedabad where 104 mm rainfall was received. During the last 21 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Dwarka recorded 47 mm of rain, Okha 30 mm, Naliya 23 mm, Rajkot 12 mm, and Surat 8 mm.
The cyclonic circulation over South Rajasthan and its adjoining areas along with the off shore trough running from Gujarat to Karnataka coast have been responsible for giving good rains over the state. In fact, widespread rains have occurred over the region after a long time. Almost all the areas have witnessed some rains during this period.
During the next 24 to 48 hours, good Monsoon rains are expected to continue over Gujarat as both the weather systems are expected to persist.
At present, the state of Gujarat is highly rain deficient at 38 percent. Also, while the Saurashtra region is rain deficient by 46 percent, rainfall deficiency stands at 30 percent over the Gujarat region. These spells of rain may help in reducing the rainfall deficiency over the region.
