Active Monsoon conditions for West Bengal, heavy rains over Kolkata

The capital city Kolkata is likely to continue with the wet spell for few more days. Intermittent rains have bettered the comfort levels. Courtesy thick cloud cover suppressed temperature both during day and night have resulted somewhat pleasant conditions at the outset of monsoon season.

Southwest Monsoon rains have been good for the entire state of West Bengal. So far, the state has recorded a rain surplus of 7% in the first fortnight of June. Sustained monsoon activity is likely in this week and the surplus margin is going to increase further.

The capital city, Kolkata has been observing moderate temperatures within the comfort range for the last few days with intermittent rains. The remnant of low pressure area is marked as a cyclonic circulation over East Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Chhattisgarh. This system is likely to move over Bihar and North Bengal in the next 24 hours. Thereafter this circulation is going to meander and stay put over West Bengal and Bangladesh in the subsequent 4-5 days. Moisture laden winds from the Bay of Bengal feeding this feature is going to enhance the monsoon activity.

Kolkata is one of the rainiest cities during the monsoon. Bouts of heavy rains to announce the onset of monsoon is quite usual for the city. Against the monthly normal of 300mm rainfall, the city has already clocked 200mm plus in the first two weeks. And it is not yet over and done. Weather conditions promise good rains with few heavy spells during this week itself. The normal rainfall for the month is likely to be achieved anytime soon, and a surplus in the kitty during the later part will compensate few dry days towards the fag end of the month.  Squally weather with frequent thunderstorm and lightening is quite likely for the next 5-6 days.
