A week full of rain and snow ahead for Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand

January 8, 2019 9:23 AM | Skymet Weather Team

The states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh as well as Uttarakhand were lashed with widespread rain and snow during the last 48 hours. This rainy and snowy spell had occurred over the hills after a large gap. In fact, the systems that had caused rain and snow before this did not result in widespread weather activity.

During the course of both Saturday and Sunday, almost all the well-known hilly resorts and cities including Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Srinagar, Shimla, Manali, Kullu, Dharamsala, Dalhousie, Nainital, Mussoorie, Kufri, Rohtang Pass, Leh, Kupwara, Nahan, Keylong, and many others.

Due to widespread snowfall over all the three hilly states of North India, Cold Wave conditions have gripped the entire region. In fact, the day temperatures have dipped to an extent that they are now settling 8-10 degrees below the normal levels.

Take a look at the table below which shows temperatures at present and their departure from normal:

In terms of rain and snow, the conditions are a little better and a short breather is likely today. However, tomorrow, after 24 hours, another system is likely which is expected to bring short spells of rain and snow over some parts of the hills of North India.

Thereafter, again, a breather is expected to be witnessed for about a day. Thereafter, another active system is expected to make an appearance which will give rain and snow over hills of North India, just like the previous spell.

Thus, between January 10 and 12, widespread rain and snow are expected over the hilly regions which will further cause another weekend to go down the drain. Even during the breather days, the remnants of the systems will continue to give some rain and snow.

Therefore, complete clearance is not expected throughout the week. Just like the last weekend, tourists are advised to avoid going to the hills this weekend as well due to the upcoming spell of rain and snowfall.
