A western disturbance moving across the hilly states of North India may bring a spell of rain in the lower mountains and mid and higher reaches likely to experience light snowfall today. The traumatic site of Uttarakhand is expected to observe mild thunderstorm activity during afternoon accompanied with sharp intermittent showers. No prolonged intense weather activity is expected to hamper search and relief operations.

The disaster site is located in a fragile terrain with an elevation varying between 5000’ and peaks in excess of 10,000’. It is a weather-sensitive pocket and the mountainous region is prone to thunderstorm triggered by small disturbances around this time of the year. Though the minimum temperature remains in single digit (5°C or less), the day temperature stays in low 20’s. Cloudy sky with a brief spell of rain and thunderstorm is quite likely over the area.

It is a weak weather system and is likely to pass away in just about 24hr. The remnant of this disturbance may cause scattered clouds tomorrow but not expected to hinder the ongoing war footing operations. A long clearance can be expected after the passage of this western disturbance and rescue work can go on seamlessly. Nearly 12 hours of daylight from 6 am to 6 pm will facilitate the air operations as and when needed.
