Multiple stories around the world are coming up recently with children taking stand against climate change. One is of a 9-year-old Ridhima Pandey from Uttarakhand. This girl has filed a petition in the National Green Tribunal (NGT) against the Indian government for not taking Climate Change seriously.
NGT is a special court set up in India back in 2010 that deals with environmental cases. Ridhima in her petition has asked the government to lay out a carbon budget and to ensure that the Carbon Dioxide reduces to 350 parts per million by 2100.
And not just this, the girl has been rather legally vigilant while going ahead with her legal procedures. The petition has been filed by Ridhima’s legal guardian.
Ridhima feels that India holds a huge potential to reduce down the use of fossil fuels. Government’s inaction in the field has led her to take up legal steps. The government has failed to take any steps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions which is going to impact both her and the future generations.
Her plea states the case when in the 34th Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, titled ‘Performance Audit on Renewable Energy Sector in India Union Government, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’, it was reported that the Central Government had failed to meet its targets for scaling up the use of renewable energy sources.
At this budding age, Ridhima has made it a mission to ensure the environment be taken care of until she is old enough to reshape the environment policies herself.
It will not be wrong to call her the 9-year old 'Greta Thunberg of India'.
