During the last 24 hours, moderate to heavy rains have occurred over many parts of Kerala in the wake of Cyclone Maha, which has intensified into a Severe Cyclone yesterday night. While Kannur recorded a whopping 75 mm rain, Kozhikode 33 mm, Karipur 28 mm, Kochi 68 mm and Alappuzha received 45 m rains.
According to the news reports, at least 60 fishermen have been reported missing despite of the warning issued against the upcoming Cyclone Maha and being advised not to venture into the sea.
Now, however, there will be a significant decrease in these rains due to the northwestwards movement of Cyclone Maha. Now, the rain intensity will start reducing over Kerala and we expect almost dry weather conditions with isolated light rains to occur over the state today and tomorrow.
Due to the Cyclone’s northwestward movement, the moisture-laden winds which were reaching over Kerala in the form of southwesterly winds will now reduce leading to a decrease in rain activities. We expect rains will now once again reduce over Kerala around November 3. During that time also we do not expect heavy to very heavy rains. Only light rains with a few moderate spells are likely over the state after two days.
By November 3 normal flow of Northeast Monsoon winds will resume over Kerala which was obstructed until now due to the Cyclone Maha. This is when, we expect Northeast Monsoon rains to resume over Kerala from November 3 onward. These on and off rains will continue for the next few days.
The rain intensity will remain light to moderate only. Heavy rains have been ruled out for Kerala for the next four to five days. The wind speed will remain high in the bracket of 40-50 kmph over Kerala for the next few days. Sea conditions will be rough to very rough for another 24 hours. Thereafter, from November 3 onward wind speed will also start subsiding.
