An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale rocked India’s northeastern state of Assam at 06:40 am on Sunday. However, no casualties or damage has been reported so far.
The quake had its epicenter in Kokrajhar at 26.5°N latitude and 90.1°E longitude with a focal depth of 10 km.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the earthquake was of medium intensity. Tremors were also felt in various parts of East India and neighbouring countries of Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal.
Guwahati had also felt strong tremors earlier in April this year, following the massive earthquake in Nepal. The northeast region of India falls under zone 5 and is considered to be the world's sixth most earthquake-prone belt.
Northeast region lies above the junction point of Indian tectonic plate, Australian tectonic plate and Eurasian tectonic plate, which makes it a very high risk damage zone.
