An earthquake measuring 5.1 on Richter scale rocked the border region between Mayanmar and the Indian state of Manipur. The quake had its epicenter at 24.25 N latitude and 94.75 E longitude with a focal depth of 80 km.
However, no casualties have been reported from either side so far.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the earthquake, which was of medium intensity, had hit Mavlaik region in Mayanmar at 1107 hours on December 21. The affected region is closest to Imphal, the state capital of Manipur, at a distance of 97 km east-southeast of city.
Tremors were also felt over several parts of Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Assam.
The northeast region of India falls under zone 5 and is considered to be the world's sixth most earthquake-prone belt.
Northeast region lies above the junction point of Indian tectonic plate, Australian tectonic plate and Eurasian tectonic plate, which makes it a very high risk damage zone.
