15 districts of Odisha on alert as Cyclone Bulbul to trigger strong winds and rains

The growing Cyclonic Storm ‘Bulbul’ over East Central and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal is most likely to become Severe Cyclonic Storm during the next 24 hours. The system would move in northwest direction during the next 48 hours and may come closer to Odisha Coast. However, as of now, it is uncertain as to where the system would make landfall.

Considering chances of the system coming closer to the state and resulting in rains, the State Government has put 15 districts of Odisha on alert. These districts include South and North Coastal districts of the state such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, Puri, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Boudh, Kandhamal and Malkangiri. However, the northern and interior parts of the state have escaped this fury.

According to Skymet Weather, the Cyclonic Storm ‘Bulbul’ is still at a suitable distance from Odisha, i.e. 700 km away from Paradip. Thus, it would give only light rain today and chances of any significant rainfall activity is less. But, strong winds of 40-50 km, gusting to 60 kmph are likely to blow during the next 24 hours and sea conditions are also expected to remain rough to very rough.

After the next 24 hours, as the system would come closer to the state, rains will pick up the pace. And moderate to heavy rain is likely coupled with dense overcast sky conditions. The winds would also become stronger and sea waves would be high extending up to 8 to 10 feet. Thus, precaution must be exercised.

The post-monsoon period is the season of Cyclones. Back to Back Cyclones have been forming and both the sides of the coastline i.e Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea have been the active basins for Cyclones since the beginning of November.
