122 mm heavy rain lashes Porbandar, heavy showers to continue in Gujarat, flash floods likely

The Southwest Monsoon has once again turned active to vigorous in Gujarat, thus giving heavy rains in parts of the state. Porbandar recorded a whopping 122 mm rainfall, followed by Naliya 80 mm, Rajkot 88 mm and Okha 47 mm in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday.

The rainfall activities have once again increased in the state, with many parts observing moderate rains with a few heavy to very heavy spells. Places like Naliya, Porbandar and adjoining areas, in particular, have recorded heavy rainfall during the last 24 hours.

According to our meteorologists, a Cyclonic Circulation is over the Kutch region up to the height of 3.6 km above the main sea level. Moreover, humid winds from the Arabian Sea are continuously feeding the moisture in the atmosphere.

In the wake of this system along with moisture-laden winds, rain and thundershowers would continue in the state for another four to five days. The intensity of rains may vary from day to day, with chances of heavy spells in some parts of the state. Heavy showers may trigger flash floods in some parts.

Today, the region of Saurashtra and Kutch would observe good rains while the intensity may oscillate between light and moderate for the Gujarat region. Moreover, one or two heavy spells cannot be ruled out. This trend would continue for the next two to three days and thereafter the Monsoon rains may taper over the region. However, in any case, the weather would not go completely dry.

The state has already been observing surplus rains and the rainfall statistics may get even better, considering the chances of more good showers in the near future.

The Monsoon so far has been good for the state and a similar trend is likely to continue until the season withdraws.

Good rains, until now, have benefited the major crops of the state. However, we fear that now the excess amount of rainfall may damage the cropping system.
