Cyclonic storm Vardah formed in the southeastern parts of Bay of Bengal on Thursday. So much so that the weather system gave very good rains over Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Not only this, several tourists were stranded in the Neil and Havelock Islands.
The system intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and has made landfall near Chennai. Now, the system has further weakened into a depression ans is over North Interior Tamil Nadu.

Cyclone Vardah had formed in the Southeast Bay of Bengal on Thursday and since then has been undergoing several intensification.
The system had given heavy to very heavy rains over Andaman and Nicobar Islands resulting in over 2000 tourists being stranded on Neil and Havelock Islands.

The system was severe cyclonic storm until yesterday and has now become a depression.
The system is the first storm of the season to have gained this intensity since Cyclone Hudhud which had intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm.
The system has given very heavy to extremely heavy rains over Chennai with the Minambakkam observatory receiving 203 mm and 119 mm rainfall at the Nungambakkam observatory.
At least 10 have lost their lives in Tamil Nadu due to Cyclone Vardah. Over 10,000 were evacuated and sent to safe places.

Scattered light rains will continue over Chennai and adjoining areas during the next 24 hours as well.
Heavy rains also occurred over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh including Nellore and Ongole.

Bengaluru has also received heavy rains with the city recording 60.8 mm of rain during the last 24 hours.
Schools in Chennai and other adjoining areas were closed on Monday in view of the cyclonic storm. Navy. Air Force and the Armed Forces were on alert and helped in the evacuation process.
