The massive earthquake which rocked Nepal last week, has left the country and its countrymen in a state of shock. A lot has happened since then and here’s a look at some important facts and numbers revolving around the heart wrenching tragedy in Nepal.

Total Casualties

Nepal authorities have confirmed over 4000 deaths. Initial search and rescue operations have led to the retrieval of thousands of bodies so far. As these ops move towards remote areas, the death toll is expected to reach 10,000.

Damage in India

India too suffered from the quake beyond boundaries. So far, over 60 deaths have been reported in India alone. Moreover, hundreds in the country were injured during the earthquake. The worst affected state has been Bihar with over 50 deaths.

Biggest Earthquake

The earthquake in Nepal was the biggest earthquake in the country in over 80 years. The impact was felt as far as West Bengal and Rajasthan. The region last experienced such a tragedy back in 1934.

The 7.9 magnitude earthquake released energy equivalent to 79 lakh tons of TNT energy. This caused a shift of about 3 meters in 7,200 km of earth’s surface.

The Indian Air Force has airlifted some 2246 people so far. A total of 5,600 Indians have been rescued from Nepal so far. The IAF has deployed helicopters, aircrafts, and medical teams to speed up relief and rescue operations in the region.

Aid From Sikh Committees
