The hills of the Western Himalayas, which experienced dryness between November and January due to the absence of strong Western disturbances, have seen a revival of winter weather activities in February. After a brief period of moderate to heavy snowfall between February 18th and 20th, the region has experienced a dry spell once again.
However, a new chapter is about to unfold. A weak Western disturbance arrived on February 26th, bringing light and scattered rain and snow across the hills. These activities are expected to continue through February 27th, followed by a temporary clear-up on February 28th.
But the calm won't last long. Another active Western disturbance is projected to reach the Western Himalayas on February 29th. This will trigger rain and snowfall, starting in Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Jammu & Kashmir. By March 1st, these weather activities will engulf the entire region, including Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Brace yourselves for a potentially heavy snowfall event, particularly on March 2nd, impacting most parts of the Western Himalayas.
The good news for skiers and winter enthusiasts might be a concern for others. With the anticipated snowfall, the risk of avalanches increases significantly. Therefore, exercising extreme caution while travelling to these areas during the first week of March is highly advisable.
