Short-Lived Comfort: Winter Chill Takes a Breather in Mumbai:

January 23, 2024 10:12 AM |

Mumbaikars, bracing for winter's embrace, may need to hold off on pulling out those cosy sweaters just yet. Despite twenty January days gone, the city hasn't experienced the usual temperature dip characteristic of this time of year. While most parts of Marathwada, Vidarbha, and North Madhya Maharashtra typically shiver by mid-January, Mumbai has not yet witnessed the typical winters.

A brief respite between January 15th and 19th brought a slight drop in minimum and maximum temperatures, offering a fleeting escape from the ongoing balmy conditions. However, this comfort was short-lived, as the winds instrumental in this dip are changing direction, blowing in warm air from the southeast.

Despite this setback, hope lingers for a winter comeback later in the month. The icy winds responsible for Mumbai's customary chill usually originate in the Western Himalayas, traversing Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and West Madhya Pradesh before reaching North Maharashtra. These chilly gusts are expected to reassert themselves towards the end of January, potentially bringing back the longed-for winter chill.

Until then, Mumbaikars can expect temperatures to climb again, basking in the sunshine while cherishing the fleeting warmth amidst the delayed arrival of winter. Perhaps it's time to dust off those summer clothes while keeping a hopeful eye on the horizon, waiting for the telltale signs of winter's eventual return.
