The jinx of dry weather finally ended for the national capital, yesterday. Moderate rain and thundershowers lashed all parts of Delhi/NCR. The rainfall commenced during the afternoon hours and continued during the evening and night with breaks in between. Of course, the rainfall distribution was uneven and varied from low teens to high twenties in millimetres. Cloudy skies still prevail and light rain is continuing over some parts.
Delhi has an average of 21.3mm rainfall in February. The base observatory at Safdarjung recorded 27mm of rainfall till 8.30 a.m. today morning. Airport observatory Palam, measured 20mm and the Meteorological office at Lodhi Road exceeded Palam and registered 24.6mm of rainfall, during this period. Narela observatory clocked the highest of 28.5mm rainfall. Many pockets of Delhi have surpassed the monthly normal in a single day and more are likely to add in the kitty, soon. Count will be ‘on’ to cover the deficiency of January, during this month.
The causative western disturbance still persists over the northern mountains. However, the induced circulation over Punjab is shifting eastward and diffusing, as well. While the snowfall activity will continue in the hills, weather conditions will improve for the national capital as we proceed through the day. Rains are likely to take a break and make way for some sunshine tomorrow. The lull in activity will be short and sweet and the showers will return on 03rdFef, albeit with subdued intensity and spread. The fresh spell will last between 03rd and 05th Feb 2024.
Courtesy of winter showers and cloudy skies, mercury levels have risen in the night and morning, giving the usual bitter chill amiss, to start the day. The record observatory at Safdarjung had a minimum of 12.3°C, about 4°C above the normal and the highest double-digit minimum over the last month or even more. Mostly clear weather tonight will push the mercury once again to single digits tomorrow morning, but still keep above the average. The morning temperatures are likely to rise again by 2-4 degrees between 03rd and 05th of 2024. A significant drop is likely early next week. Fog and cold will make a comeback after 05th Feb. Freezing winds down the slopes of northern mountains will sweep the plains, right up to Delhi and beyond.
