Cold Day Conditions In Delhi, Bitter Chill To Continue

January 23, 2024 11:00 AM |

Safdarjung, the base observatory of the national capital recorded day maximum temperature of 15.8 degrees Celsius. The mercury level was 5 degrees below the normal. Also, the minimum temperature was 4.8 degrees Celsius yesterday therefore marking it as a cold day. Cold and chilly weather is likely to continue for the rest of the week.

Although, there was no snowfall in the hills and rain in the plains, but the cold conditions continued, unabated. The main reason for this persistent cold is the very strong westerly jet stream over the northern parts of India. Though, a seasonal feature but very strong and incessant roaring jet stream with a speed of 250-300 kmph is not allowing the bitter cold to vacate Delhi and the neighbouring region. The wavy nature of the stream and few cracks in this giant synoptic feature is resolutely and consistently descending the cold snap over the mountains and plains of North India, including Delhi.

Western disturbance is likely to arrive on 27 January 2024. Firstly, the system will impact the mountains for 3 days and then stretch its arms over the plains. The national capital will be on the fringes of the system but still stand a chance of much-delayed sprinkles. This may also arrest the biting cold during that period. However, no respite looks likely till the weekend.
