Plains of North India, especially Punjab Haryana, North Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh are reeling under cold day conditions, as the day temperatures plunge well below 15-degree Celsius. Some pockets of these states are witnessing severe cold day conditions. with temperatures barely in double digits at Karnal, Ambala, Rohtak, Hissar, Pathankot, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Bareilly, and Bahraich. Mercury dropped below 10 degrees at Amritsar and Ganganagar which recorded day maximum of 9.5 degrees and 9.6 degrees respectively.

Passage of western disturbance across the mountains has been trailed by biting cold winds which are sliding down the slopes across plains of North India. Dense to very dense fog has restricted the sunshine to a bare minimum and resulted sky obscured conditions for a long duration. These conditions are unlikely to change for the next about five days or so.

Western disturbance is likely to approach the northern mountains on 27 January. The weather system will impact largely the hills only till 29 January. The combined influence of its induced circulation and main western disturbance will be visible from 30 January. Change in the wind pattern and the emergence of a cloudy sky will lead to the abatement of cold wave conditions from the plains of North India. A wet spell is likely to accompany. A twist in the weather conditions will break the jinx of severe cold over the plains from 30 Jan 2024 onward.
