Sri Lanka vs Pakistan, 1st Test, Galle: Monsoon scare looms large over series opener

June 16, 2015 1:32 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The unforgiving nature of Monsoon rains is most likely to affect the first Test match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The three-match Test series kicks off at Galle on Wednesday morning. But overcast conditions combined with persistent rainfall activity have already cast a shadow of doubt over the first Test match.

Sri Lanka is currently under the influence of Southwest Monsoon. Simply speaking, this is a rainy period for the island nation. Galle lies on the south-western strip of Sri Lanka and its close proximity to the sea is another cause of concern.

As per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, several interruptions can be expected on all five days. In fact, there are chances of a complete washout on the last two days of the game. South-westerly winds of around 20 to 40 kmph will continue to blow over the region.  Moreover, a strengthening system in the Bay of Bengal is also likely to assist in the surge of Monsoon in the region.

Heavy cloud cover along with repeated spells of light to moderate rain can be expected on all five days. Humidity levels will remain high and wet ground conditions are expected to cause further delay. The region usually receives rainfall activity in spots. Thus the Test match is at a high vulnerability of falling prey to multiple short interruptions.

Earlier in the month, Monsoon rains caused repeated delays during the one-off Test between India and Bangladesh at Fatullah, Bangladesh. The rain-hit game finally ended as a draw. The first Test match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan is likely to meet a similar fate.
