Innovative ways to generate power

In today’s era, energy demands are exponentially high and energy resources are depleting rapidly. It’s time to come up using some innovative and brilliant ideas to generate environment friendly and low cost energy without utilizing the already becoming extinct energy resources. The following list is a compilation of some excellent ways to generate power.

Play golf and charge your iphone- A golf, cricket, tennis or baseball player uses a lot of his or her energy in swinging the club, bat, racket or base, back and forth. This kinetic energy generated by the player can be stored for later use. The stored energy can charge the cell phone, laptops and other gadgets through a device. This gadget is envisioned and designed by a scientist Mac Funamizu. It could take time for an idea like this to reach India.

Cycling- The Crown Plaza Hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark, came forward with an exciting and innovative way to generate power. The system includes the guests staying at the hotel and cycles. They offer a free meal to any guest who produces electricity for the hotel on an exercise bike attached to a generator. Guests will have to produce at least 10 watt hours of electricity which is around 15 minutes of cycling to get a meal vouchers worth Rs. 1,972! The energy produced can generate electricity to run a laptop for approximately 30 minutes. The idea is easy to implement and can be implemented by anyone on an individual’s level in their own hotel or even home.

Dancing- Till date we had been of the view that clubs are the maximum consumers of electricity as the music and the lighting systems consume a lot of power on daily basis. Now the clubs are an excellent place to generate power too. The idea was implemented by a club, Bar Surya, in London, that re-outfitted its floor with springs. The springs when compressed by dancers, produce electrical current. This current is stored in batteries and consumed to run the devices in the club. This new idea can power up to 60% of the club’s energy needs.

Snakes- Anaconda, with a rubber tube body, 200 yards in length or longer, is filled with nothing but water. The snake is capable of generating 1MW (Megawatt) of power per year. The set up contains harnessed snakes, allowed to swim. The waves in the sea stimulate a ‘bulge wave’ which passes down the tube and gathers enough energy to drive a turbine in its tail. The electricity generated by the turbine can be captured and carried to shore by cables. Groups of 50 anacondas could each generate enough electricity to power 50,000 homes. The project is being developed in America currently. Strange?

Heated up Roads- Concrete roads absorb a lot of heat. A company from Holland, came up with a brilliant idea of using this heat to generate power. The heat can be extracted and used. Here they use the heat to warm the water running in pipes under the roads. This warm water can then be used to generate electricity as well as can be supplied to houses and buildings. This system provides hot water to the buildings while keeping the roads ice free in winters. Gas bills can also be reduced considerably.

Prevent your make-up from sweating off

So if your job demands you to wear makeup all day for shoots or if you simply love to put on make-up to work… the sweaty summer season and the terrible make-up melt downs must give you a tough time! Our simple tips will not only prevent your make up from sweating off but will also make you look fresh while shooting, dancing or exercising or working!

Prepare your skin- Before you apply your makeup, prep your skin with a primer. A makeup primer helps makeup stay in place and helps to absorb excess moisture during the day. Some of these products are infused with SPF for added protection from the sun's rays. Consider using  a Lakme primer which is affordable yet receives rave reviews from all the ladies and beauty experts.

Use a moisturizer- You can keep your makeup looking fresh by replacing your regular foundation with a tinted moisturizer(a moisturizer that contains a bit of color). A heavy foundation will clog pores and weigh heavily on the skin, causing it to sweat. A tinted moisturizer will even out your skin tone and keep it hydrated, it is also lightweight and allows the skin to breathe. These cosmetics are also often infused with SPF. Tinted moisturizers from Lotus receive very positive reviews from consumers and are easily available at an affordable price in stores.

No Lipstick- Keep your makeup looking fresh and new by getting rid of the heavy lipsticks and replacing with a simple and light colored lip gloss. In hot summer months, a lip gloss with a low-shine will keep lips looking pretty and smooth without appearing 'made up'. Some of the options for long-lasting, non-sticky lip gloss include Revlon Super Lustrous and MAC Pro Longwear Lip Crème. Oh! And as a golden rule, always chose light colors for summers!

Water proof make up, eye make up- If you define your eyes with lashes that are bold and look fresh, no one will notice the sweat. Eye primers can also be used before applying eye makeup. You can also combine a long-lasting, waterproof eyeliner with a powder eyeshadow over it. The eyeliner acts like a primer and reinforces the longevity of the eyeshadow adding a velvety texture and enhancing the color at the same time. Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eye Liner 2.8 g lasts longer than a lot of liquid based eye liners available in stores.

Let your make up chill- If it's so hot that your products are melting due to heat exposure, pop them in the fridge or store them in an insulated box that has been chilled in the fridge or freezer overnight. Remember, extreme temperatures can shorten the life span of your products.

Best air-conditioning tips for summers

We’re sure most of you would be itching to put on the Air conditioner in the next few days as temperatures are about to soar into mid-thirties. Some of the office premises may have already switched them on during afternoon hours. But we urge you to read this advice before turning to Air conditioning. Home or office, these valuable point would not only save on electricity bills in coming months but also protect us from diseases like cough and cold, body pain, headaches and dehydration that are caused due to temperatures differences.

Find a shade for the air-conditioner – Air-conditioner functions better while the outside air temperature is cooler. You can cool down the surrounding air temperature of an air-conditioner by providing it a shade from direct sunlight.

Apply external shades to windows - While we close blinds and windows at night to contain the heat in winters, the same should be done during days in summer to keep the heat out. Close the blinds early in the morning before the sun can warm up the house and wait until it cools down outside in the evening to open them again. This will help reduce the load on the air conditioner.

Know the standard air-conditioner temperature during summers - The standard air-conditioner temperature for summers is 18 to 21 degrees. During summer the humidity indoor will be lower, making it feel cooler even with a slightly warmer temperature set. For each degree you step outside of these temperatures you will consume approximately 8% more energy, adding up to a lot of money when your next bill comes.

Adjusting or positioning air slots – The unit with this facility could be used to save energy. Air slots should be aimed downwards when heating is on and upward when cooling is on. As hot air rises up and cool air falls, this will help to evenly distribute the air throughout the room.

Keep filters clear and fit - The amount of dust and dirt that build up in your filters can lead to blocking the air and forcing your air conditioner into working harder. Cleaning the filters is usually a simple, easy procedure that can be done in a few minutes with a vacuum cleaner. We suggest you look to your unit’s manual for guidance.

Switch on Air-conditioner when temperature is low outside - you can turn your air conditioner on while the temperature outside is still relatively cool this will increase the efficiency of the air conditioner as there is less difference between the internal and external temperatures, making it easier for the air conditioner to reach the desired temperature and then maintain it when it becomes hotter outside.

Keep the air-conditioner fan slow when humidity is high - During humid weather having your fan set to a slower speed will actually cool more effectively as the slower the air moves through the cooling equipment, the more moisture can be removed from it. You can also consider using an interior fan at the same time to help circulate the cooler air throughout the room.

Keep home appliances away from Air-conditioner – Home appliances heat could affect the thermostat’s reading and can lead to it misreading the room’s temperature and over-cooling the house.

Maintain air-conditioner regularly - Various parts of the air conditioner can become blocked or break down, leading to less efficiency. It’s important to try and have your air conditioner serviced each year as you come into summer to ensure it’s running to its full potential. You can check yourself to see that it is sitting level; that the seal between the air conditioner and the house is not damaged; and through passing a stiff wire through the air conditioner’s drainage pipes you can ensure that they haven’t become clogged.

Volcano eruptions may prevent global warming

New studies have shown that sulphur dioxide emissions from moderate volcanoes around the world can mask some of the effects of global warming by 25%. A team led by the University of Colorado Boulder was looking for clues for why Earth did not get warm as much as scientists expected it to, between 2000 and 2010.

On the other hand, the results of this new study has excused India and China, two countries that are estimated to have increased their industrial sulphur dioxide emissions by 60% from 2000 to 2010 through coal burning. “Small amounts of sulphur dioxide emissions from Earth’s surface eventually rise into the stratospheric aerosol layer of the atmosphere, where chemical reactions create sulphuric acid and reflect sunlight back to space, thus cooling the planet”, researchers said. Ryan Neely also suggests that more than anything; it is the emissions from small to moderate volcanoes that have been slowing the warming of the planet.

Although a number of theories are present which talk separately on both the reasons for sulphur emissions mentioned by scientist Ryan Neely. Of which one was a 2009 study led by the late David Hoffman of NOAA indicating aerosol increase in the stratosphere may have come from rising emissions of sulphur dioxide from India and China. In contrast, a 2011 study led by Vernier, showed moderate volcanic eruptions play a role in increasing particulates in the stratosphere.

While small and moderate volcanoes mask some of the human-caused warming of the planet, larger volcanoes can have a much bigger effect. “The biggest implication here is that scientists need to pay more attention to small and moderate volcanic eruptions when trying to understand changes in Earth’s climate,” said Professors Brian Toon from CU-Boulder’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences.

But one thing is confirmed, the emissions from the volcanoes may go up or down but the greenhouse gas emissions from human activity only continue to go up uncontrollably.

Save money on buying a new refrigerator?

Summers are here and your refrigerator is on its last leg and you are tempted to replace it immediately! Don’t know when to shop to get the best prices on your kitchen appliances? Yes it is possible to get an affordable refrigerator and still keep your cool!!

Know your needs- Before embarking on your refrigerator shopping, bring out the measuring tape. It might seem too obvious, but sizing up the space in your kitchen where your fridge will live is a crucial first step. This way you can eliminate considering models that are too big or too small for your home. Also do not forget to measure the depth and door clearance, it's too easy to buy a too-large unit, thinking that they're all the same standard size but the fact is they aren't.

Design- Refrigerators range in price and usually last for about a decade. Prices are determined, in general, by design. Top-mounted refrigerators, where the freezer sits at the top, tend to be the least-expensive models though these models are losing popularity to refrigerators that place the freezers on the bottom because most food is stored at eye level, so there is little need to bend down to reach for those leftovers, for example. So if you are really lazy, go for bottom freezer models.

Energy Efficient- You can reap long-term savings from your refrigerator by picking an energy-efficient model that will reduce your utility bill year-round. If asked, stores now even help consumers in estimating how much the fridge could cost to operate energy-wise. Attracting deals could also save you money if you're holding onto an old model and are thinking of replacing it with an energy efficient model. Though experts say, it is not enough to just look for an energy saving model. Customers must also see how many kilowatt-hours it uses. This is how much it costs to run, on average, in a year. The smaller the number, the less energy the refrigerator uses, and the less it will cost you to operate.

Simple features- You'd be wise to buy a few fridge features and save some cash. For example, stainless steel is a fashionable finish, but it will cost you something extra. Don’t forget a stainless steel finish is a magnet for fingerprints whereas a black or white finish will hide fingerprints much better and costs less. Also, don't spend money on a model with digital temperature controls, which will jack up the price of the fridge. Refrigerator companies these days tout features that purport to keep food fresher longer, such as air purifiers designed to eliminate bacteria and reduce food spoilage. Don't take the bait! By definition, refrigerators are designed to keep a consistent temperature, and how you store your food will largely prevent it from spoiling the food too soon.

Last but not the least, new refrigerator models hit stores in the summer, which means last year's models have to go. Start with the clearance price, and then negotiate down from there. Most stores will be willing to haggle.

5 best ways to avoid ill-effects of fluctuating temperatures

Temperatures in Mumbai are once again expected to fluctuate during the next two days. In this period, maximum temperatures are likely to drop by 3 to 5 degrees and the minimum temperatures would also see a gradual rise to 22 degrees making nights warmer than what was experienced during the last few days. Such a drastic change in weather in Mumbai has already taken its toll on residents of this commercial capital and with sea breezes expected to start from tomorrow, humidity will also increase to make life miserable in the Mumbai city. Here are five best ways to avoid the ill-effects of such transition in weather.

  • Keep your house clean
  • Avoid dust and air pollution. Wear a mask when outdoor. Avoid crowded places
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water. Use hand sanitizers in public places
  • Keep yourself hydrated. Avoid cold water
  • Watch your diet. Eating right during lunch and dinner is important to help the body deal with temperature fluctuations and resist infection. Have warm foods during the night and fresh foods during the day. Avoid tea and coffee during the day. They can cause dehydration. Have lots of buttermilk, juices and vegetables. Vitamin C found in oranges helps build immunity against common cold and cough.

Medicine shipment could be damaged by weather

Ordering prescription drugs online is increasingly popular abroad and is now getting popular in India as well. But have you ever thought; the convenience of receiving medicines or drugs through the mail carries the small but additional risk that your medication may be damaged during shipping. Most medications can be susceptible to losing some of their potency when exposed to environmental extremes, though the extent varies from one to the next, said Lee Cantrell, a professor of clinical pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco. “Some of the conditions that affect potency are heat, moisture and humidity. Freezing temperatures can be damaging as well, especially for medications that come in liquid form, like insulin.” Direct sunlight can be problematic for medications as well, one reason why they are never stored in clear bottles.

In one study inspired by patient stories about mail order asthma medications that had shown up looking degraded and in damaged packaging, researchers at the Carl Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Phoenix exposed packages of Formoterol, a commonly used asthma drug, to different conditions for four-hour long periods. When the mercury reached 158⁰F or higher, the medication clumped and the capsules became distorted, and a ‘significant decline’ in the drug’s potency was noted. This has now cautioned people to be aware of situations where medication can be exposed to extreme heat, like car trunks and interiors.

Though in some cases, pharmacies take precautions to prevent such problems by packing sensitive medications carefully. But for your own safety, be sure to look at the storage information for any drugs ordered through the mail. If you have concerns, contact the pharmacy or wholesaler and ask what they do to protect the integrity of the medication during shipping.

5 weird and unheard allergies

Can you imagine having an allergy to the thing you desire most? As unbelievable as it may sound, there are many people who have allergies that are most unknown and unheard of those are not weather related at all, though most people would swiftly blame in on the weather. So next time you see people around you sneezing, coughing or itching, ask them if there might be a strange reason for their allergy! Doctors say an allergy is basically an exaggerated immune response to something that is most commonly not harmful yet causes strange reactions.

In this article we introduce you to five uncommon allergies that happen due to some odd reasons. They are as follows:

Kissing Allergy- It may sound humorous that a person may have a kissing allergy but it does happen to really unlucky individuals. When the person experiences it, he/she suffers from hives, rashes, prickly eyes, blisters on eyelids, puffy lips, and respiration problems. It cannot cause severe danger but passionate kisses can do that sometimes. It's not the act of kissing that causes this allergy, rather it's the allergens your kissing partner has consumed recently. So next time you go crazy clubbing or are going to try a blind date, put on a mask, if you know what we mean!

The Vibration Allergy- People with ultra-sensitive skin, most commonly become the victim of this allergy in which the vibrations of machinery like cars and air conditioners can cause irritation. Just like any other allergy, it is caused by the wrong perception of immune system to harmless objects and thus the immune system responds in defense to that object. Welt, rashes, and other skin reactions immediately appear within five minutes and remain for hours or days. The allergy can be treated by antihistamine or by calamine lotion. Whosoever invented the vibrator mode in phones, wouldn’t have thought of this!

Chocolate Allergy-   Gosh! This one’s the worst allergy ever and a curse for all chocolate lovers! Headaches, hives, an itchy mouth and throat, even a swelling of the tongue can accompany this allergy. Because chocolate includes milk, eggs, and sometimes nuts, it may be another ingredient which is causing your allergic reaction.  The only way to be certain is to check with your doctor.  You will not like this piece of advice but you must avoid overeating chocolates if not completely stop.

Allergy to Water- You might want to use this as an excuse to not bathe in the freezing winter months but don’t forget only one person out of every 23 million people may suffer from it. Aquagenic urticaria, or allergy to water is very bothersome as the patient bears itchy red lumps and soreness for almost two hours. The ions in the non-distilled water are responsible for the reaction, thus the patient has to remain careful about using distilled water only. In the scorching summer months, extreme sweating can also cause painful rashes in the body.

Allergy to Exercising - Exercise is necessary for good health but there are some cases in which many people are found allergic to exercise. This particular type of distress is known as Exercise-induced anaphylaxis (EIA) which is caused by exercise or by food that is taken before exercise. This is a life threatening allergy which happens only when the patient takes the offended food or medication that is not suitable for his health before exercise and works out immediately after it. The fatigue symptoms include heat, itching, redness of the skin, large hives, crumple and faintness.  Don’t take this lightly and visit your doctor immediately so that suitable medication can be prescribed right away.
