IPL WEATHER KOLKATA, 3rd of May

Kolkata Knight Riders vs Rajasthan Royals
Eden Gardens, Kolkata
Match starts at 8PM

Kolkata has been experiencing hot and humid weather conditions for the past few days and it will be no different today evening when home team Kolkata Knight Riders plays Rajasthan Royals at Eden Gardens in the 47th cricket T20 game.

A partly cloudy day in Kolkata would become mainly clear by the time the match starts. This will drive the temperatures down by at least 6 to 8 degrees from 39 degrees in the afternoon. This would turn out to be a big relief not only for the players but also for the spectators.

Strong southerly winds at around 25 to 30 kmph will be witnessed in Kolkata. Winds are coming in from the Bay of Bengal and will increase the humidity levels to 60 to 80% during the match. Dehydration, especially of the players has to be taken care of.

Rajasthan Royals has been playing 5 pacers in their home matches but it might opt to drop one or two of them to include spinners as there will not be much help for swing bowlers on a slow and low pitch under a mainly clear sky.  Swing bowling usually becomes effective in cloudy or overcast conditions.

Relief from heat not in sight over north; rain likely in east, northeast

Weather in north and northwest India has been dry and hot and is likely to remain so in the coming two to three days. A change in weather may be in the offing after this period in north India as a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to arrive. Rain will continue over east and northeast India during the next two days. Kerala and Tamil Nadu will also see rain in the coming two days.

A Western Disturbance over northeast Jammu & Kashmir has moved out and the weather over north and northwest India has turned dry and hot. Day temperatures in these parts have dropped but they will rise from tomorrow. Rain would make a return by the weekend in Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Some places in west Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana could witness change in weather by then.

Maximum temperatures in Delhi would rise tomorrow onwards and continue so for the next two days. By Saturday, they may reach the lower forties again. Dry and hot weather would continue to persist in the national capital till then.

A trough of low pressure runs from Bihar to south Tamil Nadu across Chhattisgarh, interior Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and interior Karnataka. The weather system will bring rain in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh in east and central Peninsula. Rain will occur at one or two places in these states during the next two days. One or two places in interior Maharashtra and interior Karnataka could also receive rain in the next two days.

Southeasterly winds from the Bay of Bengal and southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea will continue to have a brisk confrontation over Kerala and Tamil Nadu during the next two days. This will usher in rain at a few places here.

Northeast India will be the highest rain getter in the country during the next two days. Many places in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and other states will receive rain. Rainfall activities in these parts will continue to prevail due to a cyclonic circulation over Meghalaya. Moist winds are coming in from the Bay of Bengal.

IPL WEATHER CHENNAI, 2nd of May

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS VS KINGS XI PUNJAB
MA Chidambaram  Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai
Match starts at 4pm

Warm and humid weather conditions will peak when Chennai Super Kings will take on Kings XI Punjab in today's first cricket IPL match at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Temperatures will be in lower thirties and humidity level would be in eighties. Sky in Chennai would be partly cloudy during the match.

Weather in Chennai could be more demanding than any other venue in the IPL Cricket T20 tournament. High humidity levels drain the players of energy and will keep them sticky and uncomfortable on the field. Moderate winds at 15-20 kmph may however provide some relief. Chances of rain in Chennai during the match are bleak.

Harmful effects of watermelons in summer

Summer is here and we are all melting in the merciless heat of Delhi with our skin, hair and throat all going dry! So one of the main things on everyone’s mind is cooling down. And then comes out the favorite summer fruit, watermelon! No matter how it is cut or presented, it is a popular dessert in India, being both sweet and refreshing. Watermelon is the ideal summer fruit as it has high water content and replaces salts like potassium and sodium that are lost due to sweating. It also prevents dehydration, dry skin and headaches. Watermelons are also a good source of vitamins A, C and B6. But did you know, consuming watermelon may also have some unexpected side effects on you?

Here are some negative effects of watermelons that you must be careful about this summer:

Allergy - Including watermelon in your diet may trigger allergic reactions in some. Allergens in this fruit consist of malate dehydrogenase, triose phosphate isomerase and profiling, all of which are enzymes. You may experience an allergy to watermelon if you have allergic sensitivities to cucumber or carrot as well. Watermelon allergy symptoms may range from mild to severe, facial swelling, diarrhea or anaphylaxis. Visit your doctor if you notice anything unusual in your body after you have consumed a bowl full of watermelon.

Pregnancy - Eating too much watermelon while pregnant will cause the blood sugar to rise. During pregnancy, many women are psychologically and physiological unstable and eating good quantities of watermelon can push up the blood sugar levels, causing diabetes. Also, a cold watermelon may cause severe stomach pain and diarrhea in pregnant women. Remember, eating a watermelon before a meal will take up too much space in the stomach, so it will affect the absorption of the nutrients taken in from the food. Such influence will therefore be much more serious for the health of children and pregnant women.

Intestinal Disturbance - It is often advised to not eat a watermelon when it is too cold as well as when your own body is too cold. Here’s why. When the heat outside is killing and the first thing on your mind is a cold watermelon straight from the fridge, that’s the time when you should avoid it the most. Some experts believe having a very cold watermelon can have an enormous influence to your stomach, making it unhealthy and not easy to digest. Excessive consumption of lycopene (A red carotenoid pigment present in many fruits, such as the tomato) rich watermelons can cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, gas and indigestion. The simplest and most effective way to have it is to keep the watermelon at the temperature of up to 8⁰C to 10⁰C. This temperature will ensure that the fresh melon flavor is retained. People with cavities should also try to avoid eating a cold watermelon since a sudden chill may cause extreme tooth aches.

Hyperkelemia - Consuming larger quantities of foods containing potassium, such as watermelon, may adversely affect people diagnosed with hyperkalemia (higher than normal levels of potassium in the circulating blood; associated with kidney failure). Hyperkalemia can potentially result in dangerous cardiovascular effects such as irregular heartbeats, a weak or absent pulse and cardiac arrest as well as adversely affect nerve and muscle control. A typical wedge of a watermelon contains around 560 mg of potassium which is too much for people with serious kidney disorders.

There’s no reason to stop eating this spectacular fruit, just consider these points in case you have experienced any abnormalities in the past before you start binging on watermelons this summer again.

Temperatures likely to fluctuate over north, central and east India; rain to reduce in J&K

Temperatures are likely to fluctuate over north, central and east India during the next two days. Rain will continue over Kerala but reduce over Jammu & Kashmir during this period. Rain would also continue over northeast India and some parts of east India during the period. Rain is also expected in some parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Northerly winds from the Himalayan region would penetrate into north, northwest, central and east India during the next couple of days. These pleasant winds will bring down both day and night temperatures marginally over these regions. Thereafter, resumption of both  northwesterly to westerly winds would drive the mercury up here.

Temperatures in Delhi will first fall in the next 24 hours and make a comeback thereafter. Temperatures will be at similar levels to what they are today or the last two days. Day’s maximum of 40 degrees at Palam and 39.2 degrees at Safdarjang observatory were recorded on April 30.

Rain will continue over east India in West Bengal, Sikkim and northeast in the upcoming two days. Rain will occur at a few places in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.

A trough of low pressure persists, extending from Assam and Meghalaya to south Chhattisgarh across Gangetic West Bengal and Orissa. Under the aegis of this weather system, rain will occur at one or two places over Gangetic West Bengal, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and north coastal Andhra Pradesh during the period.

Extreme south Peninsula, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu will continue to receive rain during the next couple of days. The trough that runs from north Karnataka to south Tamil Nadu will remain intact during this period. Moist winds from the Arabian Sea in form of southwesterly and southeasterly winds from the Bay of Bengal are colliding in these areas to bring rain.

IPL WEATHER RAIPUR, 1st of May

Delhi Daredevils vs Kolkata Night Riders
International Cricket Stadium, Raipur
Match starts at 8PM

Weather in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh during the 44th IPL cricket match will be very warm as temperatures will be in mid-thirties. Winds over the newly built International Cricket Stadium will blow from the southwest and will be drier. Relative humidity during the match will be in thirties that will surely not be a concern for either of the teams.

Temperatures in Raipur during the day will be in lower forties up to 6 PM in the evening that is just two hours before the start of the cricket T20 match. Fall in mercury levels in unlikely to be more than 4 to 5 degrees and reach 35 degrees that is still very warm for a game of cricket in the evening. Both sides will relish the low humidity levels. Sky in Raipur will be mostly clear during the course of the match.

IPL WEATHER HYDERABAD, 1st of May

Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Mumbai Indians
Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad
Match starts at 4PM

A partly cloudy sky will give way to mostly clear skies in Hyderabad during the course of the 43rd IPL cricket match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians. The real concern for both the sides will be the temperatures during the match. Hyderabad is experiencing maximum temperature in lower forties for the past few days and there will be no letdown by the time the match gets underway at 4 PM, today.

The relief factor for both the teams will be the humidity levels that are expected to be in twenties. Mumbai will be much happier to play at humidity levels less than their home town. Had the match been played in Mumbai, the humidity level would have been in seventies.

Wind conditions in Hyderabad will be different from Mumbai in terms of speed and origin. Being based in interior of Peninsula, Hyderabad gets weak winds from the Bay of Bengal in form of easterly to southeasterly while Mumbai, a coastal city receives stronger winds from the Arabian Sea during this time of the year.

IPL WEATHER PUNE 30th of April

Pune Warriors India vs Chennai Super Kings
Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium, Pune
Match starts at 8pm

The last time when these two teams fought in Chennai, Pune Warriors had to beat not only the two-time champions Chennai Super Kings in their backyard but overcome the muggy conditions in Chennai as well. And now as Chennai Super Kings comes to Pune to play their ‘away’ match, Pune is unlikely to pose any challenges weather wise.

During the match, Pune (at around 33) will be only a wee bit warmer than Chennai (at around 31). Humidity levels in Pune will be lower than Chennai due to its distance from the coast. Westerly winds would replace the warmer northwesterly winds at the start of the match and could give a relief to both sides from heat spewed during the day (maximum of 41).

Westerly winds in Pune will be slower than southeasterly winds over Chennai. Pune will have wind speeds of around 5 kmph while Chennai will be witnessing winds at around 15 to 20 kmph at that time. Had the IPL cricket T20 match been played in Chennai, there would have been clouds but they will be missing from the Pune skies.

Weather along with pitch conditions have played a crucial role in this year’s IPL cricket where touring teams have been struggling to adjust to them. Home teams have been at ease while playing as majority (80%) of matches till now have been won by them.
