Monsoon in numerous parts of Kerala; showers to continue over WB, Bihar & Jharkhand

Heavy rain in excess of 70 mm is expected at isolated places in Kerala coast during the next 24 hours. Rainfall activities would pick up thereafter over the entire state. Rain will also continue over east India in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Sikkim during the period. Temperatures in northwest India are expected to maintain their near average trend during the next two days.

Summer monsoon rain is expected to gain foothold in Kerala during the next few days. More than 70 mm of rain is expected at isolated places on the coastline during the next 24 hours. Rain would increase and spread to many places in the state thereafter. Moist westerly winds would be speeding up to 45 to 55 kmph in Kerala in this period.

According to Mahesh Palawat, “Light to moderate rain at many places would continue during the next 48 hours. One or two places could get heavy rain in Kerala during the next two days.” Three day Skymet weather forecasts approximately 70 mm rain at Kochi, 68 mm at Thiruvananthapuram and in excess of 76 mm at Kozhikode till Sunday.

Coastal Karanataka will also get monsoon rain during the next two to three days. Mangalore in the region will receive moderate rain during the period. The city has already received rain more than 20 mm in the last 24 hours. Rain will also increase in Konkan and Goa and over south Maharashtra from Sunday onwards.

East India has cooled down due to rain during the last 24 hours. Rain is headed towards most of the places in Bihar and Jharkhand in the next 24 hours. West Bengal and Sikkim will also have rain at many places during the period. Rain will decrease in these areas thereafter. These areas are witnessing rain due to a depression over West Bengal near Bankura district.

Some showers are also expected at one or two places in east Uttar Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh during the next 24 hours.

The weather system over West Bengal will move to northeast states after the next 24 hours. Rain will increase in northeast states and many places will witness rain. But the depression would die down into a low thereafter.

Hot and dry weather would continue in northwest and central India as no rain is expected. However temperatures are expected to maintain in lower forties in coming two days as southwesterly winds are approaching the region.

Monsoon takes Kerala in its grip; rain likely in east, west coast & northeast

Monsoon has arrived over Kerala and is expected to penetrate into some more parts of the state during the next two days. Rain will also increase along the West coast and many places are expected to get showers. Rain is expected at many places in east and its coastal belt during the next two days. One or two places in this region could receive heavy rain during the period. Rain would also occur at many places in northeast.  North, northwest, central and some parts of east India would remain hot and dry.

Monsoon conditions would continue to prevail over Kerala where Kochi has received 38 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. Moist winds over Kerala would be blowing from west. Monsoon showers are expected at many places in Kerala, coastal Karnataka. Rain would also occur at a few places over Andhra Pradesh and interior Karnataka and one or two places of Konkan, Goa and south Maharashtra.

Squally winds touching a speed of 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph would prevail along and off north Orissa and West Bengal coasts during the next 12 hours. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during the period. Bihar and Jharkhand will have rain at one or two places during the next 24 to 48 hours.

Northeast India will also have rain at many places with heavy rain at one or two places in Assam and Meghalaya during the next two days. The weather conditions are associated with the storm that is hovering near Canning in West Bengal and will move over to Bangladesh to weaken into a low.

Hot and dry weather would continue over north and northwest India. The Western Disturbance over Jammu & Kashmir has moved out northeastwards. Rain is not expected in these regions during the next few days. A Western Disturbance would come into effect next month possibly by 4th. Till then, Westerly to northwesterly winds would blow over northwest plains. Temperatures would be above average by 3 to 4 degrees. Delhi will have temperatures in lower forties.

Central India especially northwest and west Madhya Pradesh will be very hot as temperatures would maintain at around 45 degrees. Westerly land winds will prevail over the region. Nagpur in central India could experience heat wave. South Uttar Pradesh will continue to witness heat wave-like conditions during the period.

Monsoon in Kerala; Deep depression in Bay to bring heavy rain in West Bengal

The weathermen, here at Skymet, are saying that monsoons are here, though we await the official declaration of the arrival of southwest monsoon in Kerala.

Continuous moderate to heavy rainfall in many districts of Kerala in the last few days suggests that southwest monsoon has entered Kerala and will soon cover the entire state.

Among these are Kozhikode - 45.9mm on 25th and 1mm on 26th May, Kochi - 17mm on 27th and 14.2mm on 28th, Mangalore - 57mm on 26th and 24mm on 28th, Amini - 22mm on 26th and 78mm on 27th of May and Allapuzha - 20mm on 26th and 21mm on 27th.

Further meteorological analysis by Skymet Weather suggests that a cyclonic circulation which formed in south Arabian Sea and moved in a northwest direction has influenced the onset of monsoon here.

On the other hand, the low pressure area in North Bay of Bengal has now intensified into a depression. This depression will continue to move northwestwards, towards Bangladesh and Gangetic West Bengal.

It is due to this deep depression that moderate to heavy rainfall may occur over Kolkata and the entire Gangetic West Bengal up till tomorrow morning. To make matters worse, heavy rainfall may be accompanied by strong winds, up to 70kmph which could uproot trees and pose damage to crops.

Rain may reduce gradually as the depression makes a landfall. The clouding effects of the system in the Bay may be felt up to Bihar, Jharkhand north Orissa and north Bengal as well. Light rain may occur in these parts tomorrow.

Lastly, below normal temperatures, thunder development and light showers may be witnessed at coastal Andhra Pradesh and coastal Tamil Nadu due to the same. Also, there are high chances of cloudy and rainy weather in Hyderabad and Chennai tomorrow.

Excess vs deficit rainfall in Karnataka

The month of May is characterized by moderately hot weather and infrequent rains in Bangalore but fortunately or unfortunately this month saw these rains becoming more frequent than usual in the city.

Figures show that Bangalore received excess rainfall of 33% in just a week’s (16th May to 22nd May 2013) time. “It is common for Bangalore to receive light showers accompanied by thunder in May but continuous rain and strong winds are a little less likely. The rainy weather maintained all throughout the month due to a continuous wind discontinuity/trough along south Karnataka and Kerala.”

It is due to this wind discontinuity that the entire south interior Karnataka has also witnessed a normal pre monsoon season (from March to May) with 107.5mm of rainfall so far. The normal figure is 115.7mm.

But while one part of Karnataka is receiving normal to excess rainfall, the rest of Karnataka is observing a stark contrast in the weather conditions. North interior Karnataka is currently reeling under severe drought like situations which show little signs of improvements. Reports also reveal, extreme hot weather continues in North Karnataka and the region has witnessed a rainfall deficit of 66% in this month. In districts of Bidar and Belgaon the deficit has been recorded up to a whopping 80%.

Though rain has occurred in north interior Karnataka in the last few days, but it has only been scattered. The highest so far recorded in the region was at Harobelavadi village in Dharwad tluk which received 85mm of rainfall on Sunday, 26th May. Moderate rain was recorded in Gadag in the last 24hrs, but was again quite diffused.

With the South-West Monsoon rapidly advancing northwestwards into parts of South-West and East-Central Bay of Bengal, there are possibilities that it may enter Bangalore around its arrival date (5th June). With the monsoon arrival, hopes of it filling the pre monsoon deficit gap in north interior Karnataka are also high.

Getting chapped lips in summers?

Dealing with chapped lips in the winters is common. In fact, dry lips are usually associated with the cold season. However, it is not that very unusual to have chapped lips in summer as well. We are into the peak of the Indian summer and the mercury soars, many people are left with painful chapped in this dry weather.

However, the remedies for chapped lips in summer are very different from those that you can try in winter. Keeping yourself hydrated is one of the best remedies for chapped lips in the hot weather. You cannot patch up your lips with excess of oils or creams but some coolants like watermelon can help. You also need to get your summer diet right to avoid chapped lips. Foods that cause dehydration should be avoided and foods with high water content must be included in your diet.

The most important part of the diet which is often over-looked: Salads. Make a colorful salad everyday and add seeds (lots and lots of them) - flax seeds (which are now easily available in India), sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, papaya seeds and all the other seeds that you can get your hands on. Seeds have all kinds of minerals and vitamins and you can use them in almost everything from salads to curries and desserts. Seeds and Nuts have essential fatty acids which make the skin soft and supple from inside. So, gorge on them.

Now, let us talk a little about skin care routine. Cleanse, Tone and Moisturize is something you have heard a lot about. So, use skin care products which are suitable to your skin type.

Or, otherwise, you might want to go for besan+milk for a cleanser as an alternative (definitely use it at night). Another alternative is Episoft cleanser. Ask for it in the pharmacy. It is a little difficult to get but the Apollo people generally get it for you. If you are unable to get it, the next best option is Cetaphil cleanser which is available very easily. These cleansers are extremely gentle on the skin and clean it without drying it.

Now, let us talk about a toner. Stay away from alcohol toners in case you are using them. Read the ingredients of your skin products and chuck out all those which have anything saying ethyl alcohol or denat alcohol. But, do not throw away products with cetyl alcohol. Only ethyl and denat alcohol dry the skin. All others are useful for cleansing process. Or, you can simply use rose water.

Moisturizer is a little tricky because not all moisturizers suit us so one a more safely recommend Cetaphil moisturizer. Else use something which already suits you.

Apart from the CTM routine, one thing which should not be neglected is exfoliation. Yes, you should exfoliate regularly even if your skin is dry. Twice a week with a gentle exfoliator is good idea. Natural apricot scrubs are a good option or using besan is also another good option. They are gentle and would not harm the skin. And, moisturize repeatedly. Buy a good body lotion which is thick enough like probably Nivea classic might suit you or some other intensive body lotion. Try not to take a bath in extremely hot water.

Another good option is oil massage for the body using almond oil or coconut oil or sesame oil once or twice a week. That will moisturize the body very well and also simultaneously exfoliate your skin. Oil is a very good option for removing the flaky skin which is generally a reason for dry skin. Also, while massaging your body, be sure to apply oil in the belly button as it is somehow magically linked to soft lips.

Coming to cracked lips, exfoliate twice a week using the tooth brush or lip scrub. And, always use a lip balm. Well, we would say don't go for vaseline but go for shea butter or cocoa butter based lip balms. If you are able to find them, well and good. Otherwise, a simple nightly treatment for your lips is to apply a tablet of Vitamin E daily on your lips and massage them. Also, include your face in this treatment.

Coming to health reasons, now, you might naturally have a very dry skin for which you can actually visit a dermatologist. The doc will get a few blood tests done and probably would be able to tell you even without the blood tests what is wrong with your skin. So, in case, all the above treatments don't work, go to a dermatologist soon enough. Don't ignore.

And, don't forget, hot temperatures and extreme humidity can also cause dryness of the skin so always keep your skin hydrated from the inside.

Uses of olive oil this summer

Thanks to excessive media exposure to olive oil, we all now know the health benefits of olive oil and the wonders which olive oil foods can do. But did you know this ‘golden liquid’ has many other ‘out of kitchen’ benefits too, especially in the difficult and dry of months of summer.

Sunburns - Olive oil can be used to help soothe your painfully reddened skin, tanned or sunburnt skin. While olive oil is not intended to be used as a suntan oil, primarily because it does not contain any sunscreen, it can be of great help after one has experienced sunburn. Mix olive oil with an equal amount of water. Apply to the affected area. For blisters, make a compress of warm olive oil and chamomile tea.

Cracked and dry feet - If a pedicure is not fixing the damage of the summer days on the beach, give yourself a foot scrub using just 3 tablespoons of olive oil, honey and brown sugar and a squeeze of lemon. Once the concoction is made, clean your feet with warm water, then rub the mixture onto feet, massage and rinse. Reapply olive oil as a moisturizer and get beautiful and smooth, crack free feet.

Dry Hair - Brutal summer heat giving you dry and brittle hair? Put the moisture back into it by heating 1/2 a cup olive oil (don’t boil it), and then liberally applying it to your hair. Cover your hair with a plastic grocery bag, then wrap it in a towel. Let it set for 45 minutes, then shampoo and thoroughly rinse. Time to throw away all the expensive hair conditioners you stacked up to cure your dry and frizzy hair this summer!

Acne - Applying oil to your face to treat acne does sound really odd but it words unbelievable wonders.  Make a paste by mixing 4 tablespoons salt with 3 tablespoons olive oil. Apply on face and leave it on for a minute or two, then rinse it off with warm, soapy water. Apply daily for one week, then cut back to two or three times weekly. You should see a noticeable improvement in your condition. The principle is that the salt cleanses the pores by exfoliation, while the olive oil restores the skin’s natural moisture.

Summer Spa - Mix olive oil with a mashed ripe avocado into a paste. Smooth onto your face or another area that needs moisturizing and rejuvenating. Allow to sit for 15 minutes, then rinse. Your summer spa is ready at home.

Weather extremes in India

Though every year the summer season sets some new records in India, it looks like summer 2013 has been a peculiar case of weather extremes in India. Boiling temperatures in the supposedly cooler hills, sudden dust storms and unexpected heavy rainfall in the so called ‘driest month of year’, May, and frequent cases of very high number of deaths because of the soaring heat.  These extreme and severe changes in the weather of India have left everyone wondering.

Here’s a look at how the month of May behaved all across India:

Delhi records the highest temperature in the last ten years at 45.7⁰C on the 24th of May.

Mercury levels reach an all-time high in Punjab as the temperatures go 7 to 9 degrees above normal. Amritsar goes hotter than Delhi and soars to a record 48⁰C on the 23rd and 24th of May. Heat wave claims the lives of at least 8 in the city.

Severe heat wave conditions and temperatures above 48 degrees (Churu - 48.2⁰C) lead to the highest power demand till date in Rajasthan at 1,701 units.

Jammu, H.P and Uttrakhand reel under extreme heat as the maximum temperatures go above normal by 5 to 6 degrees between 18th to the 24th of May.

Srinagar records 28mm of unexpected spot rainfall, claiming the lives of three, out of which two die in flash floods.  Jammu and Leh highway breaks down for several hours.

As temperatures go beyond 43⁰C, several people die in Andhra Pradesh due to a sun stroke in the worst ever heat wave conditions. The government confirms 524 deaths since April 1st while approximately 800 fresh deaths are reported in the last one week and 200 alone on Sunday, May 26th, by the local media. Prakasham district is the worst affected. It is the first time since 1997 that the State has recorded such a large number of deaths due to heatstroke.

Normal life is thrown out of gear in Vidharbha, Marathwada in central India as it continually remains the hot bed of India with temperatures in the range of 45 to 47⁰C, touching 48⁰C many a times at Nagpur and Akola.

Tourist destination Khajuraho records the hottest in Madhya Pradesh at 46.7⁰C. The terrible heat doesn’t spare the animals. 35 peacocks die in Ruar Dohra village.

Several districts of Odisha witness severe heat conditions. Bhuvaneshwar records the season's highest temperature of 45.9 degree celsius, the highest ever in the last eight years.

Unbearable heat kills two in Hyderabad and power demands lead to an inevitable fallout in terms of more power cuts (two hours daily). Reports reveal that Hyderabad alone requires around 6,000 MW power every day.

In the supposed dry month of May, Bangalore and Gangetic West Bengal record 33% and 37% of excess rainfall respectively, in a week. A continued wind discontinuity and formation of Cyclone Mahasen in the Bay of Bengal lead to excess rainfall.

A time when most hit the beach, people restrict themselves indoors in Panaji, Goa, as the temperatures hit 38⁰C in the city. The normal for Goa in the summer months is around 32 to 33⁰C.

Monsoon on track to reach Kerala coast; showers expected in parts of east & coastal areas

Most of the cities along the Kerala coast, such as Kochi, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthpuram are receiving rain for the last few days. This rain is expected to intensify further during the next two to three days as southwest monsoon could arrive over Kerala any time now. Rain is also expected along the West and East coast during the period. Rise in temperatures expected in northwest and adjoining central India.

Weather has turned cloudy and rain is expected over almost the entire coastline on both flanks of peninsular India from Mumbai to Thiruvananthpuram in Western Ghats and pre-monsoon showers from Kolkata to Chennai in Eastern Ghats. Moist winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are invading these coastal areas.

A cyclonic circulation off Orissa coast is the cause for such weather along the east coast. Kolkata, Balasore, Bhubaneswar, Kakinada, Visakhapatnam, Nellore and Chennai all have chances of rain under a partly cloudy sky becoming cloudy at times during the next two days. Temperatures in these coastal areas would drop too but the humidity level would be high.

Rain would also occur at one or two places over Bihar, Jharkhand, interiors of Orissa and Chhattisgarh as a trough of low pressure runs up to the above-mentioned system from Bihar. Rain has reduced in northeastern states as most of the moisture is being pulled away by the system in the sea. One or two places will get rain due the cyclonic circulation over Assam during the period.

In north India, temperatures would rise tomorrow onwards after the exit of the Western Disturbance from Jammu & Kashmir. Rain is expected at one or two places in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till tomorrow. Delhi will also see very hot weather conditions during the next two days. Heat wave is not expected as of now. Wind conditions in Delhi will change to increase the temperatures.

Parts of central India near northwest region will experience rise in day temperatures during the next two days. Eastern parts will see drop in temperature due to a partly cloudy sky during this period. Eastern India, especially parts of south Uttar Pradesh, could witness heat wave conditions as winds coming here will be warm and dry.
