Intense monsoon rain in Mumbai after 72 hrs; rain, clouds to continue in Delhi

After drenching Mumbai with its arrival, the southwest monsoon rains are expected to remain subdued over Mumbai during the next two to three days. The rain will again pick up in intensity and similar chaos that gripped the city in the past few days could make a comeback after this period.

The city received 78.5 mm of rain on Monday while another 70 mm of rain is expected on Tuesday. Rain will subdue on Wednesday as only 45 mm of rain is expected.

After arriving in the commercial capital, monsoon brought 65 mm of rain on 7th of June. 45 mm of rain was recorded on 8th of June while 9th June witnessed 181.1 mm of rain.

Meanwhile, in the northwest, the national capital New Delhi will get some reprieve from the sweltering heat as a period of rain is expected to prevail till 24th of June. Temperature in Delhi will drop and remain in thirties during the period.

The approach and prevalence of moist winds from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal will keep the heat away from Delhi. But increase in humidity levels especially on the days when rain will not occur could bring on muggy conditions in Delhi.

The rest of the areas in northwest would also see pre-monsoon showers during the period and the weather would be pleasant and comfortable. A Western Disturbance is expected in the region during the next 24 hours. Rain will occur at many places over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the next two to three days.

Monsoon showers can be witnessed in east India over West Bengal, Sikkim and Jharkhand. One or two places in these regions may receive heavy rain. The ambit of monsoon would make a slow progress in Bihar and east Uttar Pradesh that are likely to be covered by monsoon rain in the next 3-4 days.

Northeast India has been witnessing decrease in monsoon rain over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Rains are expected at a few places in the region during the next two days.

Monsoon rains would remain subdued over north interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh. Rain is expected at a few places over Andhra Pradesh and one or two places over south interior Karnataka.

Excessive sweating can take a toll on health

Prevailing hot conditions may give way for pleasant weather during the next few days but the presence of increased humidity could cause excessive sweating that could take a toll on your health. It could lead to muscle spasm, weakness, twitching or convulsion due to electrolyte imbalances.

Sweating regulates several chemicals and hormones in our body. These chemicals are called electrolytes, and the body's nervous system and muscle functions are dependent on the proper exchange of these electrolytic chemicals. But in case of excessive sweating, one can fall prey to severe cardiac and renal failure.

Electrolyte imbalance is caused by loss of sodium and potassium in form of sweat and could cause ailments like fluctuating blood pressure, irregular heartbeat and nervous system or bone disorders.

Those who are suffering from diabetes and various kidney problems get affected the most during the summers as they take heavy antibiotic tablets and injections which lead to more sweating as compared to other people.

People should avoid eating out and increase water intake to maintain the water balance in the body. Seasonal fruits and liquid diet should be consumed to stay fit and one should avoid going outdoors during peak hours. Extra salt and sugar, both are bad for health.

Monsoon likely to cover entire Gujarat, MP during next two days

Monsoon is expected to reach remaining parts of Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Sikkim during the next two days. It will also cover some more parts of Madhya Pradesh and some parts of Bihar during the period.

As of 11th of June, the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) is passing through Okha, Ahmedabad, Rajgarh, Satna, Ranchi, Behrampore, Jalpaiguri and Gangtok. These places are witnessing the leading edge of monsoon system at the moment. NLM is a line below which monsoon rainfall activities take place. The line will move northwards during the next two days.

Orissa, Chhattisgarh, northeast Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Marathwada will have monsoon showers during the period. One or two places in Orissa and Chhattisgarh could receive heavy showers.

The offshore season trough of low pressure along the West coast continues to persist from Kerala to Gujarat coast. Due to this trough, many places along the West coast will receive moderate to heavy rainfall during the next two days. Some places in Konkan, Goa, coastal Karnataka and south Gujarat could get heavy to very heavy downpour.

Drive safe in the rain

Monsoon has covered almost entire part of the country and bag packers and hikers are gearing up for weekend trekking and road trips in the rain. But there are certain things that need to be kept in mind before setting off for these trips as travelling during the season could be dangerous with clogged up and potholed roads. So we decided to compile a list of driving tips for safe highway and city driving in the rains.

Wipers – Want to see clearly in the rains? Replace your wipers once a year, especially during the monsoon season. Wiper blades in bad condition don't clear water from the windshield very well and distort your view. This is can be dangerous on days when it is pouring heavily. Heavy rain can overload the wiper blades, allowing an almost continuous sheet of water to flow over the screen. Give the poor wiper some rest and consider pulling over till rain becomes light!

Brakes and Tires – Check your brakes to see if they are saturated. Brakes easily fail in the rain and if they do, there would literally be no protection in case your car skids. Be sure they are pulling evenly on all wheels before building up speed again. Also check for tires before driving as bold tires significantly reduce traction wet roads.

AC is a must – It’s raining, the weather is really cool and we are advising you to get your AC serviced. Puzzled? What you might think unnecessary may help you the most in the rainy season. Your car fogging up from the inside can be big pain in the rain. Just change the temperature setting to 'warm', direct the airflow towards the windscreen and change the ventilation setting to allow fresh air into the car. Though you might need to wear a jacket inside the car to stay warm but at least this will prevent you from opening the windows and getting wet.

When it skids – This is one of the most common experiences in the rain. You would often see a driver lose control of his car on a wet pavement. But just in case you did not know, skids can very easily be prevented. Just practice this.Drive slowly and carefully, especially on curves, brake before entering the curves. Steer and brake with a light touch. If you find yourself in a skid, remain calm, ease your foot off the gas, and carefully steer in the direction you want the front of the car to go.

Lastly, beware of driving in the rain, at night,if you have a black car!! This is because motorcycles and other dark-colored cars can be easily camouflaged amongst glistening raindrops on side windows and mirrors.

Moderate to heavy rain likely over Mumbai during next 72 hours

After receiving a whopping 181 mm of rain in the last 24 hours from Sunday 8:30 am till 8:30 am Monday, the commercial capital Mumbai is expected to receive another 195 mm of rain. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will receive 80 mm, 70 mm and 45 mm of rain respectively

Water logging at many places will affect traffic movement and long jams will continue to be witnessed across the city during the next three days.

Monsoon rains in Mumbai during June usually occur in evening hours and hinder road traffic with commuters facing inconvenience going back home. So it is advisable to board Mumbai locals than take road transport when it rains in the range of 35 to 65 mm as this leads to waterlogging everywhere.
But if the rain is less than 35 mm then commuters could opt for road transport.

With the advent of monsoon, about 500 mm of rain is expected in the month of June. The average rainfall for the city for the month is 523 mm. The month has 14.5 rainy days as an average.

Monsoon was one of the weakest last year in a decade as only 298.5 mm of rain occurred in Mumbai during the month of June. The year 2008 remains the wettest in the last 10 years when the city was lashed with over 800 mm of rain during the same month.

Monsoon to cover entire central, east India in two days

The southwest monsoon will make further inroads into central India, east and east central India during the next two days. A trough of low pressure runs from north Rajasthan to Assam. It is expected that the eastern end of this trough will dip in the Bay of Bengal, thus facilitating a continuous moisture flow that would bring the first monsoon shower in these places during the next two days.

Rain will occur at a few places in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Vidarbha and Madhya Maharashtra during the next two days. Rain will also occur at many places in Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim and at a few places over Jharkhand in east India. Monsoon rains will also continue over northeast states during this period.

The northern limit of monsoon (NLM) is passing through Okha, Ahmedabad, Pachmarhi, Pendra, Ambikapur, Ranchi, Behrampur, Jalpaiguri and Gangtok NLM is the line up to which monsoon activities take place.

Rain will continue along the west coast during the period. The seasonal trough of low pressure runs from Kerala to Gujarat coast along the west coast. Most of the places in Konkan, Goa, coastal Karnataka, and south Gujarat coast will receive moderate rainfall. One or two places could also get heavy to very heavy downpour during the period.

Rain, fall in temperatures likely in Delhi

Thunder developments with rain are expected in Delhi during the next few days. Temperature of Delhi along with other parts of northwest plains will see a fall and the weather will become comfortable during the period.

A Western Disturbance is expected to affect the north and northwest India from 12th to 16 June. The weather system will be more effective this time as there will be a continuous moisture feed from the Arabian Sea, riding on southwesterly winds. High humidity levels and rise in temperatures will lead to thunderstorm developments post noon.

Moderate to heavy rain during rush hours may lead to traffic jams. Strong winds could uproot trees and electricity poles thereby hampering power supply. Flight operations could also be affected.

Humidity levels during afternoon hours may be a concern but days will be largely pleasant with southwesterly, southerly and southeasterly winds keeping the temperatures in thirties. Delhi is expected to receive its first monsoons shower by 6th of July.
