ASI planning to restore Kedarnath temple

The Archeological Survey of India is planning to rebuild the Kedarnath Temple that has been partially damaged in the calamity that hit Uttarakhand last month. The announcement was made on Tuesday by union culture minister Chandresh Kumari Katoch.

Talking to the press, Katoch said that a seven-member team of experts had gone to Dehradun but due to bad weather the team was unable to go up to Kedarnath to assess the damage caused to the temple and that the team would make another attempt to reach Kedarnath once the weather becomes favourable.

Katoch also said that the ministry will collect the funds from the Centre and state government with possibility of public participation.

The issue of restoring the century’s old temple has taken a political turn after Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi offered to rebuild the temple only to be rejected by his Uttarakhand counterpart Vijay Bahuguna.

When asked about Narendra Modi’s offer to rebuild the temple, the minister discarded it by saying that the ASI has the best experts to carry out such work and it should not be given to others.

Rain to reduce over central India, north India to remain mainly dry

Monsoon was vigorous over west Madhya Pradesh and remained active over Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra and west coast. It is expected to remain active over Gujarat, south Rajasthan west coast, foothills of Himalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Gangetic West Bengal.

Monsoon activity will reduce drastically over central India though light rain spells will continue to occur at some places.

Intensity of rain will increase over north Bihar and Sub Himalayan West Bengal. Light to moderate rain spells are expected to continue over northeastern states.

Southern peninsula will have mainly dry weather with light spells of rain at few places. Dry weather is also expected to continue in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and west Uttar Pradesh. Light rain may occur over some areas in these regions.

Meanwhile, rain is expected to bring down temperatures in west Rajasthan-the hottest place in India.

The lighter the better in the rain

Got drenched an hour back and still struggling to get dry? Why not drop wearing those heavy fabrics in the rainy season that take forever to dry. ‘The lighter, the better’, is fashion theme this monsoon! Quit those denims and opt for lighter, falling fabrics like the chiffons, georgettes, crepe and the evergreen cottons.

“It is important to choose the right fabric for a particular weather to be able to enjoy the weather fully and be completely comfortable. I always advise my clients to wear georgettes and chiffons to suit the monsoon season”, says an upcoming Delhi based fashion designer, KunalMehra. “While the humidity is also on the rise, a lot of those summer-friendly fabrics need to be kept aside. Lighter, yet stronger, fabrics are what one needs to opt for”, adds Kunal.

“I love linens but I keep my linen shirts and linen pajamas aside during the monsoon season because they tend to get terribly wet and crushed very easily in the rains. I hate it when the starch washes off, so I avoid wearing those stiff cotton dupattas too. Polyster cotton is a great substitute instead”, talks a fashion designing student from NIFT, Delhi.

It is therefore important to go for fabrics that are lightweight. This will help the fabric dry faster if at all it gets wet. Fabrics like mulmul and lightweight silk are not just right but they also add to the fashion statement. Strictly avoid fabrics which absorb water as they will take longer to dry. One could also opt for fabric like Gabardine and a few other Silicone washed fabrics as they are also stain proof to quite an extent and they will bounce off water.

Transparent plastic-like material in bright neon colours, styled for outwear purposes or for protective raincoat ensembles are a favorite in the international market and have now picked up in the Indian fashion industry as well.

“Transparent net like materials and tops in bright orange and florescent colors are in high demand and sell like hotcakes. Young college girls prefer it the most these days” tells a shopkeeper at the Greater Kailash market.

Women who love to wear ethnic outfits can now play around with shrugs and scarves in huge floral prints. Lastly, least accessories, color and funky flip flops and designer umbrellas emerge as the favorite fashion symbol this monsoon.

Day temperatures of Delhi, Haryana and Punjab may drop marginally due to easterly winds and cloudy skies.

Himachal government promises compensation to farmers

Floods have caused massive damage to the economy of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh with tourism and farm sector being the worst hit. Mammoth loses have been incurred by farmers whose produce have been washed away in the floods. The Himachal Pradesh government has therefore decided to compensate the farmers of Kinnaur district- one of the worst affected areas in the state.

Apple, peas and Rajma that are the main crops grown by farmers in the region have been completely destroyed.  According to an estimate by the horticulture department, 90 percent of the apple crop in Kinnaur district has been damaged. Keeping this in mind the state government has promised to give cash incentives to farmers at their doorsteps.

Meanwhile, teams of officials of the horticulture and agriculture departments are visiting rain-hit areas to evaluate the loss incurred by the farmers.

According to sources, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and sought financial relief to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore. The loss of private and public property in the unprecedented rains has been estimated at Rs 2,575 crore.

Heavy rain expected in central India, Northwest to remain mainly dry

Weak signs of rain in Delhi and northwest India are beginning to make everyone question the prospects of monsoon this year. Forecasts show Delhi may have thunder and receive very little or nil rain tomorrow. The weather in the capital will be mainly dry, hot and extremely humid. West Rajasthan, entire Punjab and Haryana may continue to reel under dry weather conditions due to an absence of any system. Temperatures could be between 39⁰C to 42⁰C in these regions. Delhi may record 37⁰C tomorrow.

“Our weather models suggest, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and parts of west Rajasthan may have below normal rainfall in the month of July. The weather in northwest India is therefore expected to be mainly dry for this entire month”, informs Mahesh Palawat, Head forecaster at Skymet Weather.

This dry weather will be in stark contrast to the rainy weather in central India which has been continuing in this part of the country for the last few days. Figures of rain in Bhopal show that the city received 401mm of rain, the highest ever in the last 74hrs. Heavy to moderate rain is expected to continue in Bhopal, entire Madhya Pradesh and the state of Gujarat from Thursday onwards.

“A low pressure system formed in north Bay of Bengal, moved inland and started moving westwards towards central India. Right now the system is at Chhattisgarh and may reach Madhya Pradesh very soon. Humid southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea will therefore mix up with the trough of low and bring rain of up to 100mm in Indore, Ratnam and Dhar and up to 50mm in Bhopal, Surat, Godhra and Ahmedabad”, adds Palawat.

Other than these regions, Mumbai and the entire west coast of peninsular India will witness moderate showers while light rain will continue in flood ravaged Uttarakhand for another two to three days. Northeast India and the interiors of south India will get light rain of up to 10mm.
