Barmer boils at 46.8⁰C, the highest maximum in ten years

A heat wave sweeping across entire Rajasthan led to significant rise in the mercury levels in Barmer, which recorded 46.8⁰C on Tuesday evening, the highest maximum temperature recorded in the city in the last ten years. Other major cities of Rajasthan saw the maximums settle two to four degrees above the normal average, between 42⁰C to 44⁰C.

According to latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, relief from the merciless heat is expected from the 3rd to the 5th of May as a result of a weather system called cyclonic circulation.

Barmer had consistently been recording a high of 45⁰C from Sunday onwards. The maximum temperature in Barmer on the 27th April recorded 45.1⁰C and on 28th April it touched 45.2⁰C. Temperatures kept rising through Tuesday in the absence of any weather system, touching 46.8⁰C (six notches above normal), not very far from the city’s all-time maximum of 48.3⁰C, recorded on the 28th of April 1958.

Here’s how hot other cities in Rajasthan in the last 24 hours were : Churu 44.8⁰C (4 degrees above normal), Bikaner 44⁰C (3 degrees above normal), Kota 44.1⁰C (3 degrees above normal), Jaipur 43⁰C (4 degrees above normal), Jodhpur 43.3⁰C (3 degrees above normal) and Ajmer 42⁰C (2 degrees above normal).

While the day is baking hot, nights and early mornings are not cool either. Minimums in the entire state are in the range of 25⁰C to 29⁰C. Barmer also recorded the warmest morning in the country today at 29.5⁰C (4 degrees above normal). Ajmer on the other hand saw the morning minimum settle at 28.7⁰C (5 degrees above normal).

“Clearly, absence of any weather system, neither a Western Disturbance in the hills of Jammu and Kashmir, nor a cyclonic circulation the northern plains, which could have brought some moisture along, has led to extremely dry and hot weather in entire North India in the last 72 hours”, said G.P Sharma, of Skymet Meteorology Division in India.

“The weather in Rajasthan and the weather in North India on a whole, for the next 48 hours, could continue to be very hot. However arrivals of weather systems and change in the wind pattern from the 3rd, till the 5th of May, could lead to dust storms with winds of up to 50 kmph and thundershowers in Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. High temperatures will further act as a trigger in heating up the air and giving rain in the coming days”, added G.P Sharma.

The heat of the summer is being felt in Delhi too where the maximum touched 41⁰C yesterday afternoon, the highest maximum in the month of April in the last three years.

Hottest day recorded in Delhi as summer makes a grand entrance

The maximum temperature in Delhi continued its ascending spree for the fifth consecutive day on Tuesday recording 41°C. Last 24 hours were hottest in Delhi as morning temperature was also recorded at around 22.8°C on Wednesday. The continuous rise in day temperatures has already begun to dissuade people from stepping outdoors. The latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India indicates that such maximum temperature in Delhi will sustain for the next 48 hours under the influence of westerly winds from Rajasthan. An extended weather forecast for Delhi foresees chances of rain during the weekend. The temperature will be slightly higher than normal during the next two to three days but respite from hot and dry weather is foreseen from Saturday through Sunday and then on Monday. The weather in Delhi during the first three weeks of April had largely been pleasant but since Wednesday last week, temperatures have observed a rising trend. The northward shift of Western Disturbances in later part of April has turned on the heat in the national capital as winds coming from west and northwest are warmer, hence pushing up the temperatures. Temperature in Delhi on a rising trend since last week

Day Maximum temperature
Friday 38.8°C
Saturday 38.8°C
Sunday 38.7°C
Monday 39.5°C
Tuesday 41°C

Weather in India during 7th phase of Lok Sabha elections

In the 7th phase of world's largest democratic exercise involving a staggering 814 million voters, 89 Lok Sabha seats spread over seven States and two Union Territories will go to polls on Wednesday.

These include all 26 seats in Gujarat, 17 seats in Andhra Pradesh, all 13 in Punjab, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, 9 in West Bengal , 7 in Bihar and one each in Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Here’s a look at the weather conditions in these states.

Campaigning for the 30th April Lok Sabha Elections, which witnessed heavy offloading of allegations and counter allegations between parties, mainly Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), came to an end on Monday.

Jammu & Kashmir, the northern part of the country, is the only place at present to still remain cool and comfortable. Maximum in Srinagar will remain around 26°C today as no rain or cloud cover is expected. Though Srinagar is the comfort zone weather-wise, the political scenario remains heated up as Union minister and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah said while campaigning that Kashmir will not be part of a communal state and that those who “vote for Modi should jump into the sea”.

Punjab- Coming down to the plains of North India, Punjab which was comfortable till 28th of April, saw a steep rise in temperatures yesterday.Maximums exceeded 40°C for the first time this season in several places including Amritsar, Patiala and Ludhiana.

Uttar Pradesh and Bihar- Going towards the eastern side of the country, one can experience extreme temperatures in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh and most places in Bihar are extremely hot with maximums exceeding 40°C with no possibility of rain.

Gujrat- According to latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, this state at present is sizzling hot with places like Ahmedabad and Rajkot both recording maximums above 42°C. Today, while casting their valuable votes, people in few pockets could experience heat waves. Narendra Modi's Gujarat has been relatively silent as their leader has been spending most of his time in the rest of the country, but here BJP still expects a clean sweep. The coastal stations in Saurashtra and Kutch like Jamnagar and Porbandar will be better off with maximums in mid-thirties. However, humidity during the peak voting hours will make conditions rather uncomfortable.

West Bengal- Here voting is taking place in 9 Lok Sabha constituencies including Howrah, Hoogly and Birbhum. Maximum recorded in Kolkata yesterday was 38.2°C and little rise is expected today. Rest of the places will remain hot and humid with no chances of rain.

Andhra Pradesh- In Telangana, the polls are being held for 17 Lok Sabha seats and 119 State Assembly constituencies.

According to latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, some cloud cover could be seen over Telangana which is mitigating the heat to some extent but not take it away completely. Maximums in Nizamabad, Ramagundam along with other places close by are above 40°C at present. Very light precipitation is possible but only when the polls are almost over.

Today Lok Sabha Elections are being held in the exclaves of Daman and Diu on the Arabian Sea coast. Balloting for the lone Lok Sabha seat of Dadra and Nagar Haveli also began. These Union Territories will remain warm and humid.
