Early onset of Monsoon could hamper IPL final in Bangalore

Bangalore is an easy anchor, the IT hub of the country and a place where many different kinds of people have traditionally felt at home. This capital of Karnataka is a very old city but today Bangalore is a transformed new world driven by sudden inflow of money full of charm and hardly bothered by its vanished history.

Bangalore was once one of the cleaner cities in India but rapid urbanisation in recent years has left its huge population struggling with air pollution and infrastructural problems. Day to day life here is often affected by road congestion due to very high traffic density. However, Bangalore proudly claims of a good urban planning and design when compared to other Indian cities.

Cricket rules the mind of people living here; thanks to all the national cricket players hailing from this garden city. The enthusiasm for this sport reaches uncanny heights from time to time, even by Indian standards. But keeping aside sentiments of cricket lovers, was it actually a good move on the part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council to revamp the schedule of the final match and shift it to Bangalore?

Weather in Bangalore during IPL Final match

Weather-wise probably it isn't a very good decision considering the fact that the final match is on the first day of June and according to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the very vital Monsoon season is expected to make an early onset in India. The Southwest Monsoon is likely to strike Kerala on the 28th of May against its usual onset date of 1st June. Accordingly, Bangalore might start receiving monsoon showers by first week of June and pre-monsoon rain will anyway continue.

Seems like, the organisers have not really taken into account the weather while finalising the venue of the final match of this two-month-long event. Nevertheless, talks are still doing rounds and the IPL chairman Ranjib Biswal replied to the protest letter received from Mumbai Cricket Association with few conditions attached to host the finals. But according to media reports, changing the venue back to Mumbai is not a viable option due to various reasons and the BCCI can’t keep changing the venue of the final match every second day.

The council had to take the decision of hosting the final match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore after the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) raised its hands and refused to host any of the IPL matches in Chennai due to an on-going legal tussle with the municipal authorities regarding construction of three stands at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.

Rain in Bangalore

Weather in Bangalore is generally warm during the day and very pleasant during the night because of its terrain. It is a plateau and receives cool winds at nights from the nearby hills. The average rain for the monsoon months of June and July are 89 mm and 108 mm, respectively. Rain picks up with the onset of Northeast Monsoon and September and October receives 241 mm and 154 mm of rain on and average.

Condition in Bay of Bengal turns favourable for commencement of Southwest Monsoon

With Skymet Meteorology Division announcing early arrival of the Southwest Monsoon in India on Wednesday, the present weather condition indicates that it could commence over southeast Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours.

A low level cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over north Andaman Sea off Arakan Coast towards the weekend. This feature will invoke the monsoon current and help it to establish over Bay Islands and adjoining Andaman Sea by 20th May. Monsoon clouds, a support feature have already appeared covering south Bay of Bengal and neighbouring Indian Ocean.

Prior to the onset, the cross equatorial flow generally strengthens and thereafter the strong southwesterly winds sweep across Kerala coast, announcing the arrival of Monsoon. As per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the Southwest Monsoon in Kerala is likely to commence from 28th May, three days before the scheduled date of onset.

The Southwest Monsoon is expected to be below the normal average this year. In April, Skymet Meteorology Division in India had released its Monsoon foreshadow for 2014, where it confirmed the coming Monsoon to be ‘below normal’ at 94% (error margin of ± 4%) of the Long Period Average (LPA) of 896 mm for the four-month period from June to September.

Chennai gets hotter than Delhi, records 40⁰C

While Delhi and North India continues to be cool with maximums in the lower thirties, the weather in South India has started to heat up and Chennai is currently one of the hottest cities in India with maximum temperature settling at 40⁰C (four degrees above normal) on Wednesday.

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Chennai may witness little or no relief from the intense heat for the next few days. However, chances of rain next week could once again pull down the maximums.

Day temperature in Chennai started to rise and settle around 37⁰C from the 11th of May when the weather turned dry. Prior to that, Chennai remained cool with maximums between 33⁰C and 35⁰C due to continuous pre-monsoon rain showers from the 4th till the 10th of May.

A prolonged rain activity in Chennai and the entire state of Tamil Nadu was observed due to the low pressure system which developed near Sri Lanka. Chennai in a span of one week recorded 42.6 mm of rain as opposed to the normal rainfall figure of 43.9 mm.

“With rain expected to pick up next week in South India, the weather in Chennai is likely to become rainy, ”, says G.P Sharma of Skymet Meteorology Division in India. “And if that happens, Chennai will easily record excess rainfall this summer. Maximums will drop and humidity could come down quite a bit”, he added.

Currently lack of sea breeze and a flow of flat land winds (southerly-southwesterly) is heating up Chennai. The humidity levels are ranging between 60 to 70% and the minimum temperature is one of the warmest in India.

On Thursday morning, the minimum temperature recorded in Chennai was 28.5⁰C, while the maximum is expected to sustain around 40⁰C. In the next 48 hours, day temperature in Chennai could possibly touch 41⁰C. Last year, Chennai had seen the day’s maximum settle close to 43⁰C in the last week of May.
