Balkans hit by worst flood in 120 years

An unusually strong low pressure area spun over the Balkans last Thursday and Friday and unleashed torrential rainfall in Serbia and Bosnia, causing the worst flooding in 120 years. According to the UK Met Office, till now, rainfall figures are exceeding 4 inches (100mm), spreading across the Balkans. Statistically such heavy rainfall in a span of two to three days, occurs only once in 100 years.

One third of Bosnia, an area home to 1.2 million people, has been affected by the floods. And so far the resulting flood has claimed at least 35 lives, which is likely to rise in the coming days.

Currently this worst ever flood has triggered over 3,000 landslides, unearthing land mines remaining from Bosnia’s 1992-1995 war. A power plant in Obrenovac, in Serbia, that supplies electricity to Belgrade and a large part of the rest of the country, is also at risk.

Although the water has begun to recede in some areas there are fears of more surges from the Sava River which marks the border of Croatia and Bosnia and flows into the Danube River. Further down the Danube, are Romania and Bulgaria, which have only suffered minor floods so far. Here stronger surges are expected between May 22nd and 23rd.

This historic flooding originated from an unusually strong area of low pressure extending from the surface to high altitudes.  The spiraling weather system drew immense moisture from the Mediterranean and dumped heavy rain for more than two days.

Much of Serbia, Bosnia and eastern Croatia are under water and help is coming from across the region, the rest of Europe and Russia as well as Israel and Turkey.

In addition to unusual events of world weather, U.K is also headed for a torrential rain on Thursday when more than 3 inches of rain could fall in just 48 hours with widespread flash flooding, expected to be the worst thunderstorms since the 1960s.

East India continues to battle heat wave; pre-monsoon rain continues in South India

Day temperatures continued to remain above normal by more than five degrees at many places in Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand on Tuesday. The latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India rules out drop in day temperatures in these parts at least for the next three days.

Abatement of heat wave condition for the next three days looks bleak as westerly winds continue to penetrate under clear sky conditions. Heat wave like condition will also continue over some areas in Odisha.

However, an extended forecast by Skymet Meteorology Division in India indicates some respite from heat wave in these areas towards the weekend, under the influence of a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. The westerly winds will be replaced by easterly winds which will pull down the temperatures.

The weather in North India will remain hot and dry. Temperatures are expected to remain around 40⁰C at most of the places in Delhi and its adjoining areas, for the next two days. A change in weather over northwest plains is expected towards the weekend due to the approach of a fresh Western Disturbance.

Rain will also continue in northeastern states due to a trough of low extending from the region to the centre of the weather system in eastcentral Bay of Bengal. The intensity of rain could pick up as the weekend approaches.

In South India, pre-monsoon rain will also continue over Kerala, interior Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu for the next 48 hours. The intensity will however, be less. The trough of low which is now extending from Central India to Lakshadweep across Telangana, interior Karantaka and Kerala will become less marked thus reducing the friction between dry and moist winds.

Tiruchirappalli receives highest rain in May in a decade

The religious hub of Tamil Nadu, Tiruchirappalli received 32 mm of unusual spot rain yesterday, adding to the excess rainfall figures of the state for the month of May. Tiruchirappalli has received 130 mm of rain so far, which is the highest the city has recorded in May in a decade.

Tiruchirappalli had recorded heavy rain earlier this month when a low pressure system developed in the Comrin region, near Sri Lanka. Approximately 50 mm of rain occurred on the 8th of May and 34 mm on the 7th of May

Trichy not only recorded the heaviest rain but also witnessed the hottest day  (Tuesday) in the month so far, as the maximum rose to 40.6⁰C. Day temperatures in the city have been sustaining between 39⁰C to 40⁰C for  the last one week, and weathermen tell us these high temperatures triggered rain activity yesterday.

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, rain in Tamil Nadu could continue for another two to three days, however, the pre-monsoon rain could be isolated. Rain may reduce in Tiruchirappalli tomorrow. Two weather systems, a trough and wind discontinuity line near Kerala, are responsible for widespread rain in peninsular India.

The normal rainfall figure for Tiruchirappalli for the month of May is just 61 mm. According to previous records, rain in the city, barring the year 2012 has always been in double digit. In 2013, Tiruchirappalli received 114 mm of rain, whereas in 2013 it received only 49 mm of rain. The all-time high record is however, 312 mm which occurred in the year 1886.

According to Hindu mythology, Tiruchirappalli, also known as ‘Trichy’, derives its name from the three-headed demon Trishira, who meditated to please the Hindu god Shiva.
