Latest weather update on advancement of Southwest Monsoon

The Southwest Monsoon has entirely covered southeast Bay of Bengal. It has advanced to some parts of westcentral and northeast Bay of Bengal and some more parts of eastcentral and southwest Bay of Bengal.

As already highlighted by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the advancement of Southwest Monsoon has been sluggish after its arrival before the due date in the Andaman Sea on 18th May. The Monsoon air mass usually enters Sri Lanka by 25th May but this time it could miss the date as the Monsoon line is far from it at the moment.

Weathermen at Skymet are of the view that prior to the onset, weather systems such as the current depression in the Bay of Bengal will help the cross equatorial flow to strengthen, after which the strong southwesterly winds will sweep across Kerala coast, announcing the arrival of Monsoon.

The map in the article shows that after it’s on time arrival, the eastern arm of the Monsoon has made more progress than the western arm and has reached Myanmar early this year. The green line shows the actual Monsoon line which indicates that the eastern arm of Monsoon line has already entered Myanmar and is close to northeastern states, while the western arm has covered some parts of southwest Bay of Bengal. The red-dotted Monsoon line in the map has been drawn by Skymet Meteorology Division in India.

Depression in Bay of Bengal weakens to well-marked low

The depression in the Bay of Bengal has weakened after becoming a well-marked low pressure area on Friday. The system shifted in a northeast direction in the last 24 hours and at 8.30 am today, it was positioned at latitude 17.5° north and longitude 92° east.

The well-marked low will cross the Odisha coast by 26th of May and bring extensive rain over Gangetic West Bengal and Northeast India. The weather system has been hovering in the Bay of Bengal for the last one week and is now travelling towards coastal Odisha.

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the wind sheer which is important for the strengthening of any such system has increased and weakened the system.

Weathermen at Skymet Meteorology Division in India kept a close eye on the weather system. Since its emergence as a cyclonic circulation over north Andaman Sea, the weather system has been showing lot of uncertainty. It was not an organized weather system and was frequently changing its location.

The weather system could have intensified to become a deep depression and take shape of the season's first low intensity tropical cyclone, but it has now weakened and will dissipate completely by the 27th of May.

Wheat| Chicago wheat prices dropped about 1 per cent.

Chicago wheat prices dropped about 1 per cent, with improving weather in the drought-hit United States Plains and prospects of plentiful global supplies dragging on prices. Risks inUkraineare still real but at this stage unless pro-Russian rebels take control of the ports, we expect exports from the region to remain reasonably robust this year.
