Well-marked low to weaken further in 24 hrs; heavy rain likely in Odisha, West Bengal

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India the well-marked low pressure in the Bay of Bengal is likely to weaken further into a low pressure area in the next 24 hours and die down eventually within two to three days, after making a landfall in Odisha.

“The landfall is expected by Sunday evening/night and with it will come good amounts of rain in many parts of coastal Odisha”, says Samar Chaudhury, of Skymet Meteorology Division in India. “A weather alert has already been sent out this morning for moderate to heavy rain over West Bengal,  Jharkhand and East Bihar with squally winds of 60 kmph gusting at about 80 kmph, during the next 72 hours”, he added.

The well-marked low, will move in a northwest direction and hit the Odisha coast today, and then gradually move in the northward direction towards West Bengal and Jharkhand.

Weathermen at Skymet Meteorology Division in India kept a close eye on the weather system, since its emergence as a cyclonic circulation over north Andaman Sea. Earlier it was also predicted that circulation could form into season’s first tropical cyclone but that did not happen.

Good amounts of rain from the system will come as a boon to Odisha and West Bengal that have been sweltering under intense heat wave for the last few days. Maximums have been hovering between 40⁰C to 44⁰C in the region.

On Saturday, in view of clouding, the maximum temperature in Bhuvaneshwar settled two degrees below the normal average, at 39.2⁰C. Sunday’s morning minimum also recorded four notches below normal, at 22.5⁰C.

Forecasters tell us rainy weather in Odisha could lead to a significant drop in the mercury levels, bringing cool days and much needed relief to the people. On Sunday, the day temperature all along the coast of Odisha could settle below 30⁰C.

Latest Weather Update on Advancement of Southwest Monsoon

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the advancement of the Southwest Monsoon, which had been sluggish for a week, is expected to speed up soon. A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal was restricting the movement of the monsoon line but now the weather system has weakened further into a well-marked low pressure area from a depression in the last 48 hours

Till now the Southwest Monsoon has covered entire southeast Bay of Bengal and advanced to some parts of westcentral and northeast Bay of Bengal and some more parts of eastcentral and southwest Bay of Bengal.

“The progress of the Southwest Monsoon was slow and was disturbed since its early onset over Andaman and Nicobar on the 18th of May, because of the weather system in the sea. Therefore, till now, the monsoon line remains over central Bay. But as the weather system is likely to make a landfall over Odisha and die down gradually in the next 24 to 48 hours, advancement of the vital monsoon will be faster”, says Samar Chaudhury.

The green line in the map here shows the actual Monsoon line which indicates that the eastern arm of Monsoon has already entered Myanmar and is close to northeastern states, while the western arm has covered some parts of southwest Bay of Bengal.

Keeping in mind the speedy advancement of the Monsoon in the next 24 hours due to further movement of the weather system in the westward direction, Kerala may witness timely arrival of the Southwest Monsoon.

Till then light to moderate rain/thundershowers will occur over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, whereas, Kerala will continue to receive pre-monsoon rain. In the last 24 hours, Thiruvananthapuram, capital city of Kerala received 14 mm of rain.

Moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers at a few places are likely over Angul, Balasore, Baleswar, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Jajapur, Kendrapara, Kendujhar, Khordha, Mayurbhanj, Nayagarh and Puri districts of Odisha with very strong winds ranging between 60 kmph and 110 kmph during the next 24 hours.
