According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, good amounts of rain with heavy showers in isolated pockets are expected to lash parts of south interior Karnataka and north Kerala during the next 24 hours.
“A trough is seen extending from Marathwada to the Kerala coast, running across south interior Karnataka. This weather system is what has brought good rain to Kerala and Karnataka in the last few days and our weather models are indicating that it will continue to give some heavy rain in Kerala in next 24 hours. However, it looks like rain will reduce thereafter and become scattered”, says Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Meteorology Division in India.
Rain in Kerala on 31st of May was heavy in many cities. Here’s how it looked:
Kannur 33 mm, Kozhikode 42.5 mm, Wayanad 33 mm, Malappuram 3.2 mm, Palakkad 19.6 mm, Thiruvananthapuram 3 mm, Kollam 6 mm, Idukki 10.6 mm, Kottayam 32.6 mm, Alappuzha 34 mm and Ernakulam 14.5 mm.
However, rain intensity reduced and became light from 1st June. Some of the main stations like Kochi, Kozhikode and Punalur recorded between 1 mm to 3 mm of rain.
Skymet’s Meteorology Division is of the opinion that most of the conditions required for the onset of Southwest Monsoon in Kerala have been met, but we are awaiting an official announcement from the Indian Meteorological Department of India.
