Rajasthan, Delhi, U.P witness baking summer heat, dust storms likely

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, baking summer weather in Delhi is only going to get worse for the next three days and a possible dust storm on the 8th and 9th of June may also fail to bring any relief from this heat. With mercury surging to 47⁰C, Rajasthan will maintain its position of being the hottest in India. Uttar Pradesh is not be far behind either as heat wave conditions are likely to be observed in the state.

Rajasthan - The traditional Indian heat wave makes its presence felt in Rajasthan first and then travels to Delhi and other adjoining states. But what makes this summer different from other years is that severe heat wave in Rajasthan is being accompanied by hot day conditions (minimum temperature five degree above normal). While the day is sizzling at 47⁰C in most cities, night is also extremely uneasy at 33⁰C. Dust storms reported in west Rajasthan after a weather alert sent out by Skymet Weather yesterday, brought no relief from the intense heat. Forecasts suggest more such dust storms with hardly any change in the mercury levels. The hottest city in India was Churu in Rajasthan. The maximum temperature recorded in the city on Wednesday was 47.1⁰C.

Delhi – Hot weather in Delhi came in breaks this summer with just about three major heat wave spells in the month of May, when the maximum exceeded 43⁰C. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature of 43.7⁰C recorded at Safdarjung Observatory equaled the maximum recorded on the 30th May when Delhi witnessed a massive dust storm. Thursday in Delhi could be the hottest day of the season as the maximum is expected to settle around 45⁰C. Such high maximums could trigger a dust storm  on the 8th and 9th of June. But since the dust storm will occur towards the second half of the day, there will not be any respite from the heat.

Uttar Pradesh – Uttar Pradesh is currently in the news for all the wrong reasons including extreme heat and prolonged power cuts these days. While officially there is no heat wave in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, the maximum temperature touched a searing 46.1⁰C in Allahabad, three degrees above normal. Weathermen predict temperatures will continue to stay around 42 to 44⁰C throughout the week. Some of the other hottest cities were Agra 45.1⁰C, Aligarh 44⁰C, Jhansi and Sultanpur 44.8⁰C.

Southwest Monsoon picks up in Northeast India

As already mentioned by Skymet Meteorology Division in India continuous rain since Monday indicates that Southwest Monsoon has entered Northeast India and speedily covered the eastern half of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh along with Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sub Himalayan West Bengal.

In the last 24 hours, rainfall has picked up in Northeast India and covered some more parts. Here’s a look…

In Assam, Tejpur has received 31 mm of rain, Silchar 27 mm, North Lakhimpur and Kailashahar 9 mm,  Dibrugarh 4 mm, Dubri 3.7 mm and Tinsukia 2 mm. Passighat received 5.4 mm of rain, Cherrapunji 30 mm and Kohima 6 mm.

In West Bengal, Cooch behar received good showers and recorded 47.2 mm of rain in a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Wednesday. Gangtok and Tadong in Sikkim received 34 mm and 33.2 mm of rain respectively.

Rainfall figures from Skymet’s weather stations installed in Assam-

  • Rahha and Dalangght in Nagaun district recorded 7.4 mm
  • In Sonitpur district, Chotia 34.03 mm, Balipara 12.2 mm, Sakomotha 19 mm, Pub-Chaduar 14.2 mm, Biswanath 6.6 mm and Naduar recorded 5.3 mm.
  • Paka-Betbari in Barpeta District recorded 2.5 mm of rain.

Northeast India witnesses heavy downpour during the Monsoon months due to its mountainous terrain with varying heights from valleys to high hills. Monthly average rainfall during Monsoon in India even runs into four digits and thus, these places generally have the capacity to absorb any small deficiency.

Southwest Monsoon continues to bring rain in Kerala, Karnataka

Commensurate with its characteristics, onset of Southwest Monsoon over Kerala has resulted in good amounts of rainfall over most parts and fairly heavy in some pockets. As is expected, the rain belt advanced further to cover Karnataka, Rayalaseema and Ratnagiri.

As said earlier by Skymet, Southwest Monsoon continues to bring rain in Kerala but the intensity has decreased in last 24 hours. Here’s a look at significant rainfall figures on the 4th of May, recorded by Skymet’s weather stations installed in Kerala-

  • In  Thiruvananthapuram district, Kulathoor recorded 12.5 mm, Venganoor 12 mm and Kalliyoor-Pallicha 9.2 mm of rain.
  • In Kozhikode district, Perambra 5 mm, Koduvally 27.2 mm and Bepore 12.5 mm of rain.
  • In Kannur district, Taliparamba recorded 18 mm of rain and Chalode 6 mm.
  • In Thrissur district, Koorkkancherry recorded 14 mm and Thanniyam 5 mm of rain.

Few places in Karnataka like Belgaum (20.8 mm), Bijapur 36.6 mm, Honnavar 17 mm, was also lashed by good showers in the last 24 hours.

Model data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, indicates that rainfall may go down in the next few days and pick up later on account of a monsoon system likely to come up in the Arabian Sea.

Temperature profile across South India also shows a dip, as is expected with the onset of Monsoon. Telangana in particular observed a drastic drop in temperatures on Monday, by about 9° to 10°C. Here, mercury levels were recording close to 40⁰C until last week. Temperatures did rise with decrease in rainfall but they are still below normal.

Power crisis looms large over Delhi and Uttar Pradesh as temperatures soar

After experiencing prolonged power cuts last week, people in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh could again be heading for another period of power crisis in the coming two to three days. According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh will again be witnessing temperatures in mid-forties that could shoot up the demand for power in these states.

Delhi recorded a maximum of 41.7°C on Tuesday and it is expected that during the next two days, day temperatures may touch 45°C. Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad and Varanasi which were facing protest against power cuts will also witness rise in temperatures during the period.

So, weather conditions in the national capital Delhi will be similar to that on 30th May when power demand reached a new high of 100.897 million units due to record temperature of 46°C. According to a Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) official, the highest ever consumption of power in Delhi on a single day is 2nd July 2012 when it reached a high of 107.365. So there is every chance that this record could be broken soon.

Summer conditions could be worse in Uttar Pradesh, firstly due to shortage in power and secondly due to tussle between BJP-led government at the Centre and the Samajwadi Partly government in the state. The Central government has approved 325 MW power from the central pool from 1st to 7th June, but the state will remain 1700 MW short of demand. The peak demand in Uttar Pradesh is of 12,700 MW. The state gets 10,700 MW, leaving a shortfall of around of 2,000 MW at present.

The Uttar Pradesh government has been blamed that it has stopped buying power from the Centre so that there is frequent power cuts in the state and he is able to avenge the defeat meted out to him in the general elections. However, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav tried to play it down by saying that power generation units are not working to their full capacity due to lack of coal supply.

But the new Power and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal refuted the claims and said "we have supplied adequate quantity of coal to power plants in Uttar Pradesh as per the linkages. We have also offered the state government to buy power from the northern grid".
