Temperature to drop in Rajasthan and Gujarat but sustain over rest of northwest plains

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea has come as a small relief for the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat. Moist southerly winds due to the weather system are affecting the day temperatures in the states that are in excess of 48°C at places like Churu and Sriganganagar. Maximums in Jaisalmer, Barmer and Bikaner have also dropped and will remain  below 47°C for next two to three days.

In Gujarat, Ahmedabad, Amreli, Idar and Baroda will observe day temperatures settling in the early forties during the next two days. These are the same places that were experiencing heat wave conditions with mid-forties temperatures till Saturday.

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, rest of northwest plains i.e. Punjab, Haryana, east Rajasthan and west Uttar Pradesh will get much relief from heat wave conditions as they will continue to experience hot westerly winds. Places like Amritsar, Chandigarh and Ludhiana in Punjab, Jaipur and Kota in east Rajasthan, Agra, Hisar and Karnal in Haryana would again be in the grip of intense to very intense heat wave conditions.

In Central India, west Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh will observe winds coming from the Sea due to which there will be some respite from the hot weather. Maximum temperatures will drop, however, Guna and Gwalior in north Madhya Pradesh will observe heat wave conditions.

Easterly winds are keeping a check on the day temperatures in East India excluding east Uttar Pradesh. Places including Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur and Chapra in Bihar are experiencing below normal day temperatures. Bankura, Asansol and Burdman in West Bengal are also experiencing below to near normal day temperatures. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, there will not be any significant rise in maximums for the next two days.

Heavy rain in South India; forecast of showers in Mumbai on Tuesday

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, there was heavy rain in most parts of South India and Northeast India last evening. Some major cities to have received rain were Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Visakhapatnam and Guwahati. Two weather systems, one a well-marked low pressure in the Arabian Sea and the other, a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal were responsible for rain.

On the other hand, arrival of Monsoon in Mumbai may take some time. Till then Mumbaikars will have to be content with some light rain. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India rain will increase to become fairly moderate around the 12th of June.

Rain in Kerala was widespread just as predicted by Skymet on Sunday afternoon. Here’s a look at some rainfall figures from Sunday evening to 8 am on Monday: Thiruvananthapuram 29.4 mm, Kochi 41.5 mm, Kottayam 38.6 mm, Kozhikode 52.9 mm, Punalur 22.4 mm and Alappuzha 15.6 mm.

Tamil Nadu: Proximity to the weather system in the central bay brought clouding and strong sea winds, feeding enough moisture and giving the heaviest rain of the season to Chennai (36.2 mm). Kanyakumari  and Cuddalore also recorded 2 mm and 0.1 mm of rain respectively..

Karnataka: Here the capital city remained devoid of rain, while other stations like Mangalore received heavy rain of over 50 mm. Karwar and Honavar lying along the north coastal Karnataka received 5 mm and 3 mm of rain respectively.

Andhra Pradesh: Telangana remained dry in the last 24 hours, but Visakhapatnam along coastal Andhra Pradesh received 77 mm of heavy rain on Sunday.

Lakshadweep, Andaman: While Port Blair in Andaman received mere 4 mm of rain, Minicoy in Lakshadweep observed heavy rain of about 98 mm. Agati and Amini Divi, also in Lashadweep, recorded 35 mm and 9 mm of rain respectively.

Konkan: Monsoon air mass extending up to Konkan region, brought light rain of below 1 mm to Goa and Ratnagiri as well.

Rain forecast for Peninsular India

“We expect the well-marked low pressure to intensify into a depression shortly. It will therefore govern the wind pattern over the Western Ghats, bringing in good showers to Kerala and Karnataka coast for the next two days. While Ratnagiri and Mumbai could receive some light rain simultaneously”, said AVM (Retd) G.P Sharma.

“We reiterate, Mumbai and other coastal stations of Maharashtra and Saurashtra could witness some increased rain activity around the 12th of June, a time when the system in the sea will be the closest to Maharashtra coast. And as rains increase over Mumbai, they will automatically reduce over Kerala and Karnataka coast. Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on the other hand, could expect some good showers for the next 24 hours. And we have already sent out weather alerts for the same”, added G.P Sharma.

Maximum temperature in Delhi on record-breaking spree

After the Palam Observatory, it seems it's the turn of the Safdarjang Observatory in Delhi to break the record of the hottest day during the month of June. The Observatory recorded 45.1°C as maximum temperature on Sunday, missing it by a whisker of being the hottest day in last ten years, which stands at 45.4°C recorded on 1st June, 2012.

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, speed of the westerly winds will be crucial for the intensification of heat wave conditions in the national capital. If they remain strong, they will not let the maximums to go beyond its previous highest of 47.2°C recorded on 29th June, 1944.

But if they (winds) get stalled during noon, temperatures will rise as happened in the case of the Palam Observatory that recorded 47.8°C as the maximum temperature on Sunday, the highest in last 62 years. According to our reports, winds were slower between 12 to 3 pm at Palam, compared to that in the morning between 10 to 12 am, which led to intense heat wave in the area.

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, some relief from the ongoing heat wave can be expected in the next 48 hours as there are chances of dust storm in some of the areas. Under the influence of a weather system in the Arabian Sea, moist winds may reach more parts of northwest India to bring relief from the hot conditions.

But as the weather system in eastcentral Arabian Sea moves in north-northwest direction and reaches the Gulf of Aden by 15th of June, day temperatures in Delhi could start rising again bringing back heat wave conditions. Westerly winds may again turn dry and hot.

Riots break out in Uttar Pradesh amid record breaking temperatures

This Summer in India seems to have already left a scar on the minds of people for its terrible heat and uncontrollable power crisis. While weather gods seem to show no mercy, political parties are busy playing politics over the already heated matter. Combating the extreme heat wave in India and enraged by the power crisis, thousands of people rioted across Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, set electricity substations on fire and took power company officials hostage.

People ransacked offices and took several workers hostage for 18 hours until police intervened. An angry crowd set fire to an electricity substation in Gonda. It took three hours for firefighters to put out the flames on Friday. Another substation was set on fire in Gorakhpur.

An acute power crisis continues in Uttar Pradesh with the state without power for the fifth day in a row. Friday remained the hottest in Uttar Pradesh as the mercury touched 47⁰C in the capital city Lucknow, while Allahabad in the state observed an all-time high maximum temperature of 48.3⁰C.

The daily power supply in many villages of Uttar Pradesh is only for about two-three hours, while the towns are getting 10-12 hour power supply. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akilesh Yadav said officials were trying to purchase power from other states, though they were also facing shortages amid the intense heat.

Meanqhile, extreme heat wave conditions continue to prevail in the capital city Delhi too with the mercury climbing steadily to 47⁰C at the Palam Observatory. According to a Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) official, the highest ever consumption of power in Delhi on a single day is 2nd July 2012 when it reached a high of 107.365. So there is every chance that this record could be broken soon. On the 30th of May the power demand in Delhi reached a new high of 100.897 million units due to a record temperature of 46°C.

Weathermen at Skymet say Delhi and adjoining states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan could get a slight relief from the heat as the mercury could drop by a degree or two in the next 72 hours, followed by some dust storm activity on the 13th of June. Monsoon will advance to North and Central India only towards the end of June.
