Rain in Uttarakhand likely to increase from Sunday

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, rain is expected to increase in Uttarakhand from Sunday (22nd June) onwards which could affect the Char Dham Yatra going on in the state.

A trough of low extending from the Bay of Bengal to Punjab across Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana would shift to the foothills of Himalayas in Uttarakhand thus bringing in moist winds which will collide with the hills to give rain in the state.

However, weathermen at Skymet Meteorology Division in India are yet to ascertain the amount of rain that could occur but they are of the view that rain would not be as heavy as in 2013, which lead to massive destruction in Kedarnath and Badrinath, killing more than five thousand people including pilgrims.

Uttarakhand received heavy to very heavy rain last year due to a strong Western Disturbance that reached the state earlier than expected. But this time as there is no such weather system expected, most areas will receive only good amounts of rain. However, one needs to be carefull as rain could lead to landslides, hampering the Char Dham Yatra

The Government of India and the state government of Uttarakhand are keeping a close eye on the weather of Uttarakhand which was evident during a meeting convened on Tuesday by Union home minister Rajnath Singh to review the progress of restoration work in the state following the 2013 disaster.

According to media reports, the meeting was attended by senior officials of Uttarakhand government, NDMA, Planning Commission, Border Roads Organisation, India Meteorological Department, ministry of road transport and highways and NDRF. In the meeting it was decided that the Central Water Commission should share hydrological reports and warnings for Uttarakhand with the state government on a daily basis.

The steps that would be taken to avert such disasters would consists of Weather bulletins that will be issued three days in advance for 14 flood-prone locations across Uttarakhand starting June 20.

Not only this, the Uttarakhand government, as part of its efforts to avert a repeat of last year's 'Himalayan tsunami', has advised department of space to check the possible formation of artificial dam or lake in the higher reaches through satellite imagery and sound timely alerts.

Monsoon in Pune making slow progress

The vital Southwest Monsoon after getting delayed by about nine days, is making a slow and sluggish progress in Pune. Monsoon hit the city on 16th June and has brought little rain since then. And according to the latest weather update, chances of good rain in Pune look dismal for the next one week.

Weathermen at Skymet say rain could have picked up pace but for the cyclonic storm Nanauk stationed over the Arabian Sea a few days ago, the onset of Monsoon got delayed over Pune.

Currently, the Northern Limit of Monsoon is seen passing through Veraval, Sanghali, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam. This means, monsoon has reached coastal Maharashtra and south Madhya Maharashtra but is yet to cover remaining parts of Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha.

This shows a stark contrast to last year’s situation when Monsoon in India was making a fast progress and had covered Pune by 8th June and entire Maharashtra by 10th June. 2013 was a year of above normal rainfall by 106% as compared to 2014 where the monsoon average has been estimated to be around 94% by Skymet.

So far, Pune has had mere 14 mm of rain in the month of June, with the highest rainfall being 5 mm on the 5th of June. Rainfall has been continuous but light and scattered for last three days. In the last 24 hours, Pune received only traces of rain, while on 16th and 15th June it was 2 mm each.

“Weather models at Skymet are indicating that rain in Pune will continue for next couple of days but just like Mumbai, it is going to be sporadic. No good showers are expected anytime soon. Needless to say, this could be yet another example of the dreaded El Nino phenomenon.

Erratic weather in India since the start of this year, with numerous incidents of hailstorm in Maharashtra, and the news of a weak Monsoon ahead, has already led to a significant rise in food prices across the country. Health conscious Puneites, could burn a hole in their pockets this season as the prices of exotic veggies have risen by 60%, double the prices last month.
