Skymet weather

Rest of the month slated to bring good rain over Central India, West Coast

The cyclonic circulation developing over northeast Bay of Bengal is likely to become a low pressure   area within 24 hours.

In the next 24 to 48 hours, the weather system will bring widespread good Monsoon rain over Telangana, Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha. The rain belt will gradually shift to bring rest of Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Maharashtra under its purview.

By the 22nd and 23rd, a fresh weather system will bring rain over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha.

Weather in South India

Meanwhile, good showers will continue along the west coast, particularly Konkan and Goa, under the influence of the Monsoon trough running from Gujarat coast to Kerala coast.

On Saturday, Agumbe in Karnataka received a whopping 232 mm of rain while Madikeri received 62.4 mm of rain. Goa received 27 mm of rain,  Ratnagiri 32 mm and Karwar16 mm.

According to latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the Monsoon surge will remain on a low key over Kerala. Mumbai will also continue to receive rain throughout the month, but with varying intensity.

The west coast is one of the two main pockets of India (other being Northeast) where Monsoon rain is usually very heavy during the Monsoon season and therefore, they play a vital role in affecting the overall rainfall figures of the country.

The cumulative rain deficit in Central India now stands at 41%. In South India there has been no change in the last 24 hours and thus, remains stagnant at 27%.

Gujarat bears maximum brunt of El Nino; only region to receive scanty rain

Skymet Meteorology Division in India had earlier stated that from being the rainiest state last year Gujarat could be the driest one this El Nino year. Present scenario and the facts stated in this article seem to substantiate this statement.

Southwest Monsoon generally covers Saurashtra and north Gujarat by 15th June. It is true that the progress from Saurashtra to Kutch is generally slow but by 1st of July we observe good rain over Kutch. But this year a poor scenario prevailed as Monsoon rain over the state had been delayed beyond a limit of repair.

The western arm of the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM), passing through Veraval and Surat, remained stagnant from 15th of June to the 15th of July.

In 2013, coastal regions of Kutch and Saurashtra received 64% excess rainfall while rest of Gujarat recorded 31% excess Monsoon rain. But this year, Southwest Monsoon neither had a good beginning nor a decent progress in most parts of the country including Gujarat.

As have been reiterated by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, a powerful El Nino spells trouble for India, which mostly faces below normal rain and occasionally even drought. But Gujarat seems to be bearing the maximum brunt of it.

Cumulative Rain Deficit exceeds 60%

Till 8th of July, cumulative rain deficiency in the sub-division of Saurashtra & Kutch remained 83% and Gujarat as a whole 92%. The state showed some improvement by the 13th as deficiency reduced to 75% over Saurashtra & Kutch, and 91% in the entire state.

In the last 3 days, Veraval received 158 mm of rain, Surat 118 mm, Rajkot 98 mm and Ahmedabad 58 mm of rain. Good showers brought down the rain deficiency significantly and as of 18th of July, the state stands rain deficient by 77%. Saurashtra & Kutch also showed improvement but still remains scanty at 62%.

Delhi records lowest maximum in last 8 years on Friday

On Friday, Delhiites enjoyed an extremely cool weather as the city recorded lowest day maximum of 29⁰C, in last 8 years. The spell of heavy and widespread rain on Thursday brought down the mercury way below normal as the monthly average for July is 35⁰C. The lowest maximum of 28⁰C in last 10 years, was recorded on 27th of July, 2006.

Monsoon current reached the national capital by the 6th of July when the Safdarjung Observatory received only 0.9 mm of rain. On the 3rd and 4th of July, Delhi received just 4 mm and 7 mm of pre-monsoon rain, respectively. Thereafter, Delhi/NCR witnessed a long dry spell when temperatures and humidity levels kept rising.

Delhi experienced hot and sultry weather as temperatures rose from 37⁰C on 6th to 42.3⁰C on the 12th of July, due to lack of Monsoon rain. Minimums too settled in the higher-twenties, touching even 30⁰C. Finally, 26 mm of rain recorded at the Safdurjung observatory on the 13th brought some relief. However, showers were patchy with north and northeast Delhi going dry. Only south and central parts of Delhi received rain.

Finally, Delhi was lashed by heavy and widespread rain on Thursday, though varying in intensity. In a span of 24 hours, the Palam Observatory recorded 103.6 mm of rain, while Safdarjung observed 56.7 mm of rain.

Interestingly, such spells, exceeding 100 mm (at Palam) are not many. It is only the third such spell in the last decade, the heaviest being 144.6 mm on 7th July, 2006. The second highest was 117.5 mm recorded on 11th July, 2004. However, the all-time high is 265.8 experienced on 9th July, 1972, which is higher than the monthly average of 215 mm.

According to latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, this rain occurred due to the low pressure area in Madhya Pradesh shifting closer to Delhi-NCR and west Uttar Pradesh.
