Mumbai observing large surplus of Monsoon rain in July

In a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Sunday, Mumbai has observed 143 mm of heavy rain. This spell of rain has come after a gap of nearly ten days (19th July onwards). During this period the city recorded a paltry 52 mm of rain, which is unusual for the month of July.

So far Mumbai has witnessed five spells of heavy rain including the one experienced on Sunday. According to the data available with Skymet meteorology Division in India, 200 mm of rain was recorded on 3rd July, over 100 mm each on 12th and 16th July and 98 mm on 8th July. There have also been two days of nil rain in Mumbai, on the 6th and 23rd of July.

Mumbai lies in the Konkan and Goa region and is a major contributor to its seasonal rainfall. The city has already received about 1200 mm of rain in July so far against the monthly average of 800 mm, which is about 30% above normal for the month. But the surplus rain in Mumbai has failed to bring any kind of relief to Konkan and Goa sub-division as the rainfall deficit still stands at around 25%.

Meanwhile, moderate to good showers will continue in Mumbai for the remaining three days of the month.

Most parts of the country to observe rain on the auspicious occasion of Eid

After the dry spell of three days from 25th to 27th July, rain has picked up across most parts of the country. With a whopping 143 mm of rain on Sunday, Monsoon revived in Mumbai and Delhiites also observed some rain after a lull of 10 days. As the holy month of Ramadan draws to a close on Tuesday, Muslims in India will celebrate Eid with good Monsoon rain in most parts of the country.

Rain in Central India

The cyclonic circulation built up in the Bay of Bengal developed into a low pressure area on Sunday over Odisha and adjoining West Bengal. The system is likely to move in westward direction across the states of Central India.

The system will bring good to heavy showers in southern parts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The rain belt will extend up to Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and finally reach Gujarat and south Rajasthan.

Rain in South India

Good showers are likely along the west coast as well, particularly in Konkan & Goa. Tamil Nadu, which has been largely dry, has also been receiving some rain. In the last 24 hours, Chennai received 3 mm of rain.

Rain in North India

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, scattered rain and thundershowers will continue across North India, in the states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana. Delhi/NCR will also continue to receive rain for two days. However, hilly states will receive more showers than the plains and this spell of rain will not be enough to influence the national cumulative rain deficit, which has been stagnant at 25% since last couple of days. Good rain is in the offing for Northeast India as well.

Cruelty of Monsoon in Delhi

The condition of Monsoon in Delhi doesn't seem to improve. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, in the last 10 days from 17th to 28th July Delhi has observed an abysmal 6 mm of rain, with 3 mm being recorded on both 19th and 23rd July.

Had the Monsoon rain been evenly spread out, the ten day period should have approximately recorded 75 mm of rain.

Delhi is one of the poorest pockets in terms of rain this Monsoon season. Even among the four metros of the country including Chennai, which falls in the rain shadow area, Delhi has observed least rain during this period.

The scarcity of rain is therefore resulting in above normal temperatures in the city. On Sunday the Safdarjung Observatory recorded 37.4⁰C as the maximum temperature, which is 3 degrees above the normal average. The Palam Observatory too saw maximum record 38.5⁰C, which is 4 degrees above normal.

So far the Safdarjung Observatory has observed 101 mm of rain against the monthly average of 214 mm. 57 mm and 26 mm of rain on the 17th and 13th of July, respectively, has immensely contributed to this number. Rest of the days have largely been dry, with very light or no rain.

Forecast of rain in Delhi

Meanwhile, conditions look favourable for some scattered showers in Delhi-NCR for 48 hours.

According to the latest weather update by Skymet meteorology Division in India, we expect Delhi to observe some improved rain during August and September however, the deficit may still persist.
