Politicians and actors extend help to people affected by Hudhud

bjkldhnCyclone Hudhud that hit coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on Sunday has now turned into depression from a very severe cyclonic storm. Heavy rain and strong winds that lashed many parts of the two states left a trail of destruction resulting in 21 deaths and leaving 5,00,000 people abandoned and homeless.

Though heavy rain and strong winds have subdued and moved over to Chhattisgarh and East Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, the ravaging incident has brought people from all walks of life together, working towards restoring faith in government, donating to relief funds and helping the needy in this hour of misery.

Besides monitoring the relief operations, Indian politicians are personally ensuring a speedy recovery of the people injured and affected by the battering cyclonic storm.

While popular Telugu film actors Pawan Kalyan and Ram Charan Teja have come forward and made donations Chief Minister's Relief Fund, Manchu Manoj has expressed interest in participating in Visakhapatnam's relief work.

Besides monitoring the relief operations, Indian politicians are personally ensuring a speedy recovery of the people injured and affected by the battering cyclonic storm.

General public too took to twitter to express their views on the devastation caused to the port city and restore faith of those affected in state government's endless efforts.

Cyclone Hudhud triggers excess rain during Northeast Monsoon

Crops destroyed by cyclone HudhudSevere cyclonic storm, Hudhud that had hit coastal city of Visakhapatnam on Sunday had triggered massive rainfall in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. As a result, the country rain deficit has declined to 48% against 60% on October 13.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the country recorded 17.6 mm of rainfall against the normal of 43.6 mm till October 12, the day cyclone had hit the coast. While a day later on October 13, total amount of rainfall recorded was 24.1 mm against the normal of 46 mm.

The southern peninsular region is already experiencing Northeast Monsoon and cyclone Hudhud has aggressively added to the amount of the rain. However, rains were only confined to northern parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha.

While the other pockets under this region did not observe any significant rainfall due to this cyclone. The southern peninsular region includes Coastal Andhra Pradesh, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala, Rayalseema and Tamil Nadu.

The major districts affected in the coastal Andhra Pradesh during the cyclone were Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, East Godavari and West Godavari. As on October 13, several cities across these districts such as Gantyada recorded 383 mm of rain, Srungavarapukota 340 mm, Nellimarla 243.4 mm and Gajapathinagaram 222 mm to name a few.

While, major affected districts in Odisha were Gajapati, Koraput, Malkangiri and Ganjam where R. Udayagiri witnessed 260 mm of rainfall on October 13, Pottangi 240 mm, Mahendragarh 230 mm and Malkangiri 180 mm.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, these two states are no more under the threat of heavy rainfall as Hudhud, which has now gained the status of depression, has moved to Chhattisgarh and towards to Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.

Crops affected

The cyclone Hudhud has left trail of devastation in these coastal areas, particularly the standing crop, which were ready to harvest, have been completely destroyed. As per the reports by The Times of India, banana crop on 1,050 hectares, papaya on 142 hectares, coconut on 4,500 hectares, mango on 7,550 hectares, vegetables on 4,500 hectares and horticulture crops on 12,500 hectares were destroyed by Hudhud.

In order to compensate the massive loss Andhra Pradesh government has increased the input subsidy for paddy, groundnut, cotton, sugarcane, chillies, vegetables, onion, flowers, papaya and watermelon from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per hectare. While, farmers cultivating pulses, sunflower, soyabean, wheat, ajwain and linseed will get Rs 10,000 per hectare as against Rs 6,250. The changed subsidy is in effect from October 12.

For maize, the input subsidy has been raised to Rs 12,500 from Rs 8,333. Farmers who lost mango, citrus, cashewnut, sapota, guava, pomegranate, etc., are to get Rs 20,000 instead of Rs 15,000 per hectare. While, compensation for each coconut tree lost has been increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000, as reported by national daily.

The system has not lost its steam and is still causing good rain over parts of Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh and East Uttar Pradesh.

Cyclone Hudhud has left a trail of destruction in Andhra Pradesh and parts of Odisha, leaving over 20 people killed and nearly 5,00,000 people homeless.
Though the system has tracked away from coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha as it weakens further, moderate rain has been observed in last 24 hours in parts of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

While Pendra in Chhattisgarh received moderate rain of 168 mm in past 24 hours, Bilaspur 82 mm and Durg 68mm, Satna and Umaria in East Madhya Pradesh received 99 mm and 65 mm of rain respectively in the same span. Parts of Uttar Pradesh too received moderate to light showers.

Currently situated 120 km away from Southwest of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh and Satna, Madhya Pradesh, the system is weakening into a low pressure, spreading towards Northeast M.P. and Northern Chhattisgarh. Rain is likely to occur in next 24 hours in parts of East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Northern Chhattisgarh.

Cyclone Hudhud after making landfall on Sunday moved northwestward and continued as a cyclonic storm for more than 12 hours, which generally is not the case. Cyclones after making landfall fail to maintain their storm characteristics for a very long time and weaken rapidly

 

Widespread rain in North India, more showers expected in Delhi

Day time has become cool and pleasant with maximums settling in the lower thirties, while nights have become a little cold and Acs are barely being required.

Though, the pleasant weather condition has pepped up the mood of the people in the city, there is a large section that is worried and is keeping fingers crossed in hope of clear skies.

As we all know that this is the time of wedding season in India, any alert of rain would spoil the entire celebration. On October 16, 17 and 18 there are several weddings that are going to take place in Delhi and according to Skymet Meteorological Division in India, the weather conditions are largely going to remain the same, with clouds playing hide and seek.

This is due to a Western Disturbance in Jammu and Kashmir which is moving across and affecting the weather in North India. In fact there is another system following and is likely to affect the weather in the region for 2-3 days, in terms of clouding.

Meanwhile, in view of the Western Disturbance Chandigarh in Punjab received 11 mm of rain in last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Monday. Kapurthala and Ludhiana also recorded 2 mm of rain, while Patiala recorded 7.6 mm of rain. There was some good rain observed in Haryana too. Karnal observed 38 mm of rain, Kurukshetra 7 mm and Hisar 4.4 mm.

Up in the hills, Shimla recorded 2 mm of rain in the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Monday. Solan 7.2 mm, Dharamsala 2.2 mm and Sundarnagar recorded 4.4 mm of rain.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the higher reaches in Jammu and Kashmir will continue to receive some snow, while rain in North India will prevail for the next 48 hours.

Rain expected in Delhi on Tuesday

india gate Delhi is likely to witness light rain showers on late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, there are two factors that will be affecting the weather in Delhi.

Firstly, there has been change in the wind pattern because of the cyclone Hudhud that had hit coastal city of Visakhapatnam on Sunday. At present, winds in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR have changed to easterlies.

Secondly, there is an active Western Disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir, which is affecting the weather across Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana and areas along the foothills.

As per the forecast by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Delhi will witness a dip in maximum temperature, which will hover around low 30s, while there will be slight increase in minimum temperature as it will be in low 20s.

Delhi has already been witnessing pleasant weather conditions for past four days, as day time is tolerably warm and nights are relatively cooler. One can also feel the chill in the early morning hours.

As on October 12, the maximum temperature was recorded at 34.5 degrees Celsius and minimum settled at 18.6 degres Celsius. Similarly on October 11, the maximum temperature was 33.5 degrees Celsius, while minimum settled at 18.6 degrees Celsius.

The prevailing weather conditions are indicative of the fact that the national capital is heading towards the winter season.
