Stay healthy as winter approaches

Season changeWinter is knocking at the door as temperatures are plunging across the country. But as the season changes it becomes imperative to take special care of your health. One must keep a watch on what you eat and drink because it can bring along a host of diseases. Let us go through some healthy tips to enjoy the weather.

BE CAUTIOUS

Common cold is a contagious disease that spreads rapidly. One should be cautious and maintain adequate distance from those who are infected with the disease. If at home, one should prevent sharing basic things such as towels, handkerchiefs or even food.

TAKE REST

If  you are down with cold and cough, you might feel feverish and have bodyache. Doctors always advise to take rest and ask to refrain from any exertion so that the problem does not aggravate. Your body can fight off the virus better if you’re well-rested.

EAT A BALANCED DIET

During the cold season, we find ourselves feasting on large quantities of food, which leads to weight gain. But you do not need to worry much as it’s natural. According to a nutritionist, chemical changes in the brain during winter increases the body’s desire for carbohydrates and bigger quantities of food. However, you need to proceed with caution and keep a watch on the portion size. Moreover, we should increase the intake of seasonal vegetables as they are rich in proteins, vitamins and iron, which increases body immunity.

WASH HANDS

Washing hands is one habit that should be followed round the year. We come in contact with several people and things during the day, without realising that we that the germs have been passed on. This habit prevents you from germs and reduces your chances from getting infected with allergies, especially cold and cough.

HYDRATE YOURSELF

In winters we do not tend to drink much water, as a result water level in the body decreases. Therefore, keeping a bottle handy is always advisable as water releases harmful toxins from our body. Avoid taking carbonated drinks as they stop the enzymes in the body from functioning efficiently resulting in indigestion. Instead drink warm beverages such as ginger tea and green tea.

EXERCISE IN WINTERS

Most of us become lazy during the winters and really have to struggle a lot to come out of warm and cozy quilts, which sends our exercise regime in for a toss. However, this can be taken care of by exercising at home. You can do simple stretch exercises like sit-ups, waist and knee bends to flex your muscles. Or else, Yoga is also an option as it can be performed indoors and is known to help reduce respiratory problems during winters.

Delhi gears up for pleasant Diwali

Diwali final CroppedLast five days have comparatively been colder in Delhi. Temperatures have been settling below normal forcing Delhiites to wear full sleeves clothes during night and early morning hours.

According to the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Delhi recorded 30.4°C as the maximum temperature on October 16, which is 2 degrees below normal, while the minimum settled at 16.2°C, again 2 degrees below normal. On October 17 the minimum temperature in Delhi had settled at 15.6°C, which is a good 3 degrees below normal. On October 18 and 19, minimums were again 2 degrees below normal at 16.5°C.
This trend is likely to prevail for another two days before the maximum temperatures return to the monthly normal of 32.5°C and minimum to 18.5°C. So weather wise it is going to be a pleasant Diwali this year.

But like every year Diwali is quite a troublesome time for people suffering from allergic reactions like asthma, etc. And the situation is not going to be any different this time either. The emphasis on a ‘Green Diwali’ too, will bring little or no relief from the high levels of smog on Diwali day. Furthermore, the early morning smog, low wind speed, high moisture content combined with the smoke from the crackers will be irritable to eyes.

Latest update on Nepal blizzard: Death toll rises to 39, about 371 rescued

Nepal blizzardDeath toll in the Nepal blizzard has risen to 39, as several more bodies were spotted in the snow covered Himalayan terrain. So far, 371 people have been rescued from the Annapurna circuit that surrounds the world's most dangerous and tenth-tallest mountain Mount Dhaulagiri in central Nepal.

Rescue operations are underway as dozens are still missing. As per media reports, 12 more helicopters were pressed into action to drop searchers in inaccessible spots, while the soldiers patrolled through different directions along the 240 km long route.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, no snowfall is expected for next 36 hours. However, snowfall will again resurface post that time period, which might hinder relief operations.

Thorong La, the highest pass along the popular Annapurna trek, is at an altitude of 5,416 meters, but the route does not necessitate mountaineering experience, which is the prime reason that lures scores of foreign adventure tourists here every year. Moreover, the disaster struck at a time when the weather is usually calm and clear.

What can be termed as Nepal's worst mountain disaster ever, a blizzard had engulfed trekking groups trying to scale the popular hiking route on October 15. Severe weather was triggered by the tail end of Cyclone Hudhud, which battered the east coast of neighbouring India on October 12 before heading northward.

Aftermath of Cyclone Hudhud has impacted the peak trekking season in Nepal with the series of avalanches, landslides, heavy downpour and snowstorm. The cyclone also sparked heavy downpours in other parts of central and western Nepal, including district of Masang and Mustang.
