Low Pressure Area Forms Over Arabian Sea, To Intensify, Storm Track Remains Dubious

Under the influence of cyclonic circulation over Lakshadweep and Southeast Arabian Sea, a low pressure area  has formed over Southeast and adjoining East-Central Arabian Sea. The invest area is centered around 12.3°N and 67.3°E, nearly 700km away from the coast, in to the sea.  It is likely to become well marked in the next 24hours and strengthen further subsequently. It is expected to move west-northwestward, thereby increasing its distance from the Indian coastline.

Cloud configuration around the low pressure has started organizing, dominated by convective clusters taking circular shape. Presently, the low pressure is lying over very warm sea surface with temperature around 30°C. Adequate heat potential will support growth of the system for the next 2-3 days. The environmental conditions, including the marginal wind shear will be supportive of further deepening of weather system.

There is still no clarity on the fate of this weather system, as it moves over Southwest and Western parts of Arabian Sea.  Precarious weather conditions over these parts exhibit divergent outcomes.  There is lack of consensus amongst various numerical models on the track, timelines and intensity of the system, as of now. No conclusive prediction is possible at this juncture. The brewing disturbance essentially need to be kept under observation for the next 3 days.

Majority of models track this likely storm, heading for Yemen- Oman coast.  However, the GFS models are suggesting recurvature while positioned over deep central parts of Arabian Sea and steering the system towards Pakistan and Gujarat coast.  Sea surface temperatures, as such, are dropping over western and northern parts of the Arabian Sea.  It is a very common observation, around this part of the season. Such a scenario degrades the evolving storms, over the sea itself.  Also, the uncertainties of model skills need to be convolved with delicate and tricky oceanic conditions, over those parts, to predict reliable outcome.

Possibility of a potential tropical storm, the first one of the season this year, within the existing envelope of oceanic and environmental conditions remain obsessed. Chances of development of a cyclone far exceed the rare probability of abating. Three days of observation period becomes crucial and decisive, to commit reliable forecast.

Sultry Chennai to host NZ vs AFG WC Match 16

Yesterday's thrilling game between the Netherlands and South Africa suffered a little setback due to rain in Dharamsala. So much so, that the match was reduced to 43 overs for each side. The exciting part was when the Netherlands emerged victorious against South Africa. The former batted first and scored 245 runs for South Africa to chase. The bowling lineup of the men in orange was so good that South Africa could only score 200 runs and were all out in 42.3 overs.

Today, the 16th instalment of the ICC World Cup match will be played between New Zealand and Afghanistan in Chennai at the MA Chidambaram Stadium at 2:00 PM. We expect sultry weather conditions during the first half of the match. Initially, the temperatures will be around 31 or 32°.

Humidity will be between 65 and 85% therefore, the chances of dew over pitch and ground are very high. The temperature will drop to 24 degrees by the end of the match. We expect moderate winds from the Northeast direction. Wind speed may be between 12 to 15 kmph.

The sky may be partly cloudy but we do not expect any rain activity during the match. This means that the game will be completed with full overs.

Good rains lash the hills of North India, to continue today

Good rainfall activities have lashed the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand in the last 24 hours. Popular destinations like Gulmarg, Srinagar, Pahalgam, Kullu, Manali, Dharamsala, Dalhousie, Shimla, Joshimath, Kedarnath, Nainital, Mussoorie etc. have seen rainfall activities, making this a widespread rain episode.

The hills of North India are expected to see rain today as well, but there may be a slight reduction in intensity. Nevertheless, the spread will be on the higher side today as well.

Tomorrow, remnant of the system may give some rains. The day after tomorrow, higher reaches may see some showers but other parts will see clearance and thereafter, complete clearance is likely. This widespread rainfall over the hills and snow in the higher reaches will set the tone for wintry conditions across North India.

Good rains lash Rajasthan, Jaisalmer receives 17 times its monthly mean

The state of Rajasthan has seen some very good rains in the last 24 hours. However, it has been the city of Jaisalmer that recorded the most amount of rainfall.

During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Jaisalmer saw 84 mm of rains, Phalodi 31 mm, Churu 12 mm, Sikar 11 mm, Pilani 10 mm, Jodhpur 9 mm, and Bikaner 3 mm.

Rajasthan usually becomes silent after the withdrawal of Monsoon and rains are not seen, and that too at this rate. In fact, it is all the more peculiar for Jaisalmer to see over 17 times its monthly rains for October in just 24 hours' time.

Now, rains may be seen in some parts today but will clear out by tomorrow, with temperatures remaining on the lower side for some time.

Delhi rains result in a pleasant day and nippy morning

Delhi and the NCR saw some good rains last night which were accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms. Moreover, Safdarjung observatory recorded 5 mm of rain, Ridge 10 mm, Palam recorded 4 mm, Lodhi Road 4.8 mm etc.

Today, we expect some rain for Delhi NCR. However, tomorrow onward clearance is likely and rainfall activities will take a backseat.

These rains have resulted in a significant drop in minimums, wherein Safdarjung has dropped to 17.2 degrees, and Ridge to 13.1 degrees. These minimums will remain below normal and hang around 17 degrees at least until the weekend. Thereafter, there might be a slight increase.

Even the maximums will remain below normal and may reach normal after the weekend. However, it does not seem like the minimum will reach above 20 degrees now and will remain around 17-19 degrees itself.

Twin Storms Likely Over Indian Seas, Arabian Sea To Score Over Bay Of Bengal

Post withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, the West Pacific, South China Sea and Indian Seas have become active basins for tropical storms.  While a tropical cyclone is likely to come up over the South China Sea in the next 24 hours, Indian Seas will witness the formation of low-pressure area on either side of the coastline.  A low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea is likely to come up in the next 24-36 hours, with a sizeable potential of rapid intensification to a tropical storm.  Another low pressure area is expected over east-central Bay of Bengal (BoB) during the same period.

A cyclonic circulation is marked over the southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep region. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form shortly. It is expected to intensify rapidly into a depression/ deep depression over the east-central Arabian Sea by 20th October.  Favourable oceanic and environmental conditions support further strengthening to a cyclonic storm over west-central Arabian Sea by 22/23rd October. Numerical models are showing divergent tracks and timelines, as of now.

The majority of models suggest northwestward movement, directing it towards the Yemen-Oman coast.   However, the recurvature of the storm from the central Arabian Sea, as projected by GFS models and its ancillary, can not be ruled out. In such a scenario, the cyclone will have a chance to barrel towards the Gujarat coast. Once the weather system intensifies to a tropical storm, the position of the subtropical ridge will be the deciding factor for its future course.  This weather system will need close observation for the next 72 hours. More clarity is expected about the track and timelines of the cyclone after it displays the visible configuration and broad outlines of a tropical storm.  One thing is for sure, that the Arabian Sea will host the first storm of post monsoon season 2023.

South-Central BoB seems to be rather turbulent on account of the transition from southwest monsoon to northeast monsoon.  A couple of cyclonic circulations are embedded In the flow, currently marked over southwest and east-central BoB. These cyclonic bubbles are likely to merge and a broad circulation is expected to come up over east central BoB in the next 36 hours. A low-pressure area is likely to appear over the same region during this period. This may further strengthen to shape upto a depression/deep depression by the 20th/21st of October.  Any predictions beyond these timelines will be premature estimates.  However, the sea & environmental conditions, coupled with climatology make it prudent, not to discard the possibility of yet another storm over the Bay of Bengal.

Slight interruption during SA vs NED WC Match 15 as rain likely in Dharamsala

The 15th match of World Cup cricket will be played in Dharamsala between South Africa and the Netherlands on October 17. The match will start at 2:00 p.m. Weather will remain cool and comfortable with partly cloudy to cloudy skies throughout the match.

Western disturbance is moving across the Western Himalayas. Therefore, we expect intermittent light rain activities during the match. There may be occasional interruptions in the match but we do not expect continuous downpours or heavy rainfall.

Dew is possible over the ground and the pitch. The temperature range may be between 22 and 19 degrees. Humidity level will also remain high.

Low Pressure Area Likely Over Bay Of Bengal, Keep Safe Distance From Tamil Nadu Coast

Close on heels of likely low pressure area in the Arabian Sea, yet another weather system may come up in Bay of Bengal, as well.   Southwest monsoon withdrawal is expected to be completed in the next about 2 days.  Following withdrawal, Bay of Bengal gears up for ushering of northeasterly winds, a precursor to the arrival of winter monsoon over South Peninsula. Bay of Bengal (BoB) at the moment is very turbulent, a very common feature during the transition from southwest to northeast monsoon.

Currently, there is a cyclonic circulation over deep areas of southwest BoB  and another one coming up over eastern parts of BoB.  Under the combined influence, a broad cyclonic circulation, mostly oriented east-west, is visibly coming up over the central and adjoining southern parts of BoB. This looks to be getting more organized and also shifting bit closer to the Tamil Nadu coast over the next 48 hours.

A low pressure area is anticipated to form over southwest BoB on 18thOctober,  at a safe distance from Tamil Nadu coast.  This weather system is likely to meander over the same region in the subsequent 72 hours. The feature may not cause any heavy rains over Tamil Nadu because of adequate distance but will surely align the northeasterly flow of winds, prerequisite for setting of northeast monsoon.

The scheduled arrival date of the northeast monsoon is 20th October. This is likely to get delayed.  However, the presence of cyclonic circulation followed by a low-pressure area will stimulate the easterly stream over BoB.  Light to moderate rainfall is quite likely over Coastal Tamil Nadu and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh during this week but may not suffice for typical onset of northeast monsoon.
