Bokaro, Ranchi and Jamshedpur continue to witness pre Monsoon thundershowers

Pre Monsoon In Jharkhand

Since past few days, the state of Jharkhand has been performing fairly well on account of different weather systems. Moreover, we are in the phase of pre-Monsoon season when all these thundery and lightning activities are at its peak.

In the past 24 hours, few places of Jharkhand received intense thunder-squalls as well as thundershower activities. Places like Bokaro, Chaibasa, Daltonganj and Jamshedpur recorded 15.2 mm, 25.1 mm, 1.4 mm and 31 mm of rains, respectively.

These activities were due to a Confluence Zone extending from Gangetic West Bengal to Telangana and Interior Karnataka. Also, the humid winds from southeast are blowing from Bay of Bengal were seen merging with hot and dry winds from the Northwest over the area, leading to formation of convective clouds. Hence, resulting in subsequent thundershower and rainfall activities. Lightning strikes were also very frequent in this rain episode.

The thundery activities would be a sight during later part of the day, either in afternoon or evening. This is the favorable time during the Pre-Monsoon season that these activities intensify. When the temperatures rise and there is moisture incursion, Nor’wester or Kal Baisakhi becomes violent.

At present, a feeble Cyclonic Circulation is over northern parts of Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas. Also, a trough is seen extending from this Cyclonic Circulation further eastward across Jharkhand up to West Bengal and Bangladesh. Therefore, widespread activity is ruled out. The activities over these places would be either due to localised weather conditions and terrain.

The eastern half of Jharkhand like Bokaro, Chaibasa, Daltonganj, Ranchi and Jamshedpur would be on the receiving end of these isolated rains.

Especially in the last three days, it has rained pretty good in Jharkhand. On April 18, rains were 47% excess and on April 19, it was 764% excess that is greater than normal for that date and on April 20, it was 700% excess. While, on April 21, the rains were short by 62%. In the coming 24 hours, these rains are expected to reduce and would be isolated in nature.

Bengaluru rains to return today evening, intense showers likely in pockets

Rain in BangalorePre-Monsoon rain in Bengaluru are all set to return on Monday evening. According to Skymet Weather, intense thunderclouds are already seen hovering over the city, with rains and thundershowers are likely to follow soon. Cool breeze has already started blowing, making the weather pleasant.

Clouding is more intense over southern parts of the state capital. The weathermen are expecting some heavy spells over South Bengaluru, while other parts would also see good showers.

Live lightning and thunderstorm status across IndiaClick here to check live lightning, rain and thunderstorm status across Bengaluru

These rain and thundershowers can be attributed to the trough running across South Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. This is a semi-permanent feature during the pre-Monsoon season, which keeps oscillating east to west and vice versa.

Along with this, a confluence zone can also be seen over the region, which would further enhance the weather activities.
These approaching weather activities would bring much relief from the ongoing warm afternoons.

Though started on the weaker note but pre-Monsoon rains picked up pace during April. So far, in the month, the city has seen three spells of good rains, wherein city had recorded 8 mm, 17 mm and 21 mm of rainfall on April 9, 18 and 19, respectively.

With this, Bengaluru has already surpassed its monthly average rainfall that stands at 41.5 mm. More spells of rainfall would be an added advantage, in terms of excess rainfall.

These creatures are going extinct and the reason is climate change

94eab224cfb336fc14364b788c6357da7b212a80

This Earth Day the theme is that of ‘Protect Our Species’ and there's definitely a reason to it. Here’s a list of species that are already endangered and are at a risk of extinction soon, all because of climate change! Yes, it’s getting real now!

Bees

why_we_need_bees_1200x627

Many species of bees are going extinct worldwide especially that in the US and Europe. Bees are an essential part of the ecosystem and play a massive role in pollinating flowers.

Giraffe

These beautiful creatures drive a lot of ecotourism each year. The herbivores also play a key role in plant growth, spreading seeds from the fruits and plants they eat.

Coral reefs

Found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans these reefs are home to more than a quarter of the planet's marine life. They also play a major role in eco-tourism and fisheries.

Great Apes

With the maximum similarity an animal can have with a human, great apes are facing a slow extinction.

Sea Turtles

Found in the tropical and sub-tropical areas, these one of the oldest creatures on the Earth are falling prey to Global Warming.

Insects

Over the past four decades the overall populations of insects have shown a 45% decline. This in turn has posed risk to plant pollination and multiple food webs across the globe.

Birds

Nearly 40% of the total bird species are prone to extinction. Migratory birds are immensely important for the food chains globally. Birds eat away pests and sometime even act a pollinator.

Sharks

Sharks play a very crucial role at the end of food chains by maintaining the populations of ones behind them in the chain. Climate change alters their habitats, affecting their ability to reproduce and find food.

Plants

A wide variety of plants are endangered right now. Climate change degrades the soil they grow in and raises sea levels.

Elephants

Elephants around the world are losing their habitats on an alarming rate due to climate change.

Fish

Climate change disrupts their migration and threatens habitats that they reside in.

Whales

These marine mammals are facing huge population declines worldwide. Their role in ocean ecosystems is undeniable.

If not taken into account now, we might end up loosing many plant and animal species from our Earth forever. It’s high time we start taking things seriously!

A few things you can do to celebrate this Earth Day

istockphoto-1057320928-612x612 Every year the 'World Earth Day' is observed on April 22. A few brands go on a social media campaign, a green hour is observed, the Google doodle sees some change and here you have it- the day comes and goes, and we, like any other day, resume our daily trails. But ever thought that you can also be the part of the Earth Day and celebrate the Earth, at least on this single day. Here are a few ways you can make the Earth feel special-

  1. Reuse and Recycle

Consignment-Stores-Ottawa So, there are some clothes and shoes lying around in your closet since a long time? You can use this occasion to get rid of your old belongings in the best way possible by handing them over on consignments, or on the counter of clothing brands (many brands like that of H&M actually take your old clothes)! Hand over that old book tray to the Kabaadivala. Old toys can be given over to NGOs like Goonj, instead of throwing them away.

  1. Turn off that switch (and make it a habit)

Here we are reiterating it again- don’t forget to turn off that switch when you leave the room. And essentially- make this a habit for the rest of the year! Use less water when you brush. Use a bucket instead of a shower, a mop instead of a water stream, a plant water sprayer instead of a garden hose. how-to-water-plants-648x432

  1. Take the Metro today

Instead of driving about in your personal car, take the public transport today. Sometimes, it’s also better to meet some earthlings on your way to the office! metro Now even the Delhi Metro is going all green! You didn’t know this? You need to read this- This.

  1. Take that trash out (from your street)

This Earth Day do not just go about doing your own trash but pay some heed to the trash lying outside your house as well. Make sure your street is clean. If you find trash clustered up somewhere, what else can be the best idea than to go on a cleanliness drive and also getting to know who lives next door! Well, thank us later! So, these were some you-already-know things which you can consider trying today and pay some tribute to the Earth of ours. After all, we all owe it something! Heat wave to sweep Rajasthan and Gujarat in coming days despite rains on April 24-25

Rajasthan Royal Article In the pre-Monsoon season, heat wave spells become more intense in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan, particularly in the western parts of Rajasthan as we move towards May. In fact, the month is the hottest month for both these states, as June onwards Monsoon season starts setting in the nearby states of Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. This leads to change in wind pattern that in turn results in slight temperature drop in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

This April, Rajasthan has received fairly widespread pre-Monsoon activities. Spell of dust storm activities accompanied with strong winds were followed by hailstorm and rainfall activities. Due to such widespread rains, at present East Rajasthan is largely excess by 227% and West Rajasthan by 27%. However, Gujarat remained almost dry with few spells of widespread rain and thundershower activities occasionally. These weather activities in Rajasthan and Gujarat have been attributed to the passage of successive Western Disturbances and their induced cyclonic circulations over parts of Rajasthan. Now, in the absence of any significant weather system, hot and dry weather is prevailing over most parts of these states for last many days. Moreover, temperatures are continuously rising due to which heat is picking up pace. In coming days, no relief is in sight over Rajasthan and Gujarat. Therefore, we expect rising temperature pattern to prevail with maximums settling around 39˚C. Some districts may even come under heat wave condition with day temperatures exceeding 40˚C. But due to the Western Disturbance approaching the Western Himalayas on April 24 and 25, few parts of West Rajasthan such as Phalodi, Jaisalmer, Sri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh may observe clouding followed by patchy thunderstorm activity. However, these showers would not bring any relief from scorching heat as these showers would take place during the evening hours only and thus, would not have any impact on the day maximums. Chennai rains to begin anytime, relief from heat as temperature slips to 33 degrees

Pre Monsoon Rain in Chennai

The day has finally come for Chennai to witness its first spell of pre-Monsoon rains. Although interior parts of Tamil Nadu have been witnessing on and off pre-Monsoon rains, but the activity has been escaping the state capital so far.

However, the situation took a u-turn on Monday. Intense thunder clouds have already engulfed Chennai along with strong winds to the tune of 45 kmph. With this, mercury which had peaked to 36°C have dropped significantly and is now settling around 33°C. In case of rains, we can expect mercury to drop by couple of degrees more.

According to weathermen, thick convective clouds have already developed over the city and thus, rains are likely to commence any time now. We expect chances of one or two short spells of rains over western suburbs of Chennai today.

Click here to check live lightning, rain and thunderstorm status across Chennai

These rains can be attributed to a confluence zone which is extending up to Tamil Nadu. As a result, parts of North Coastal Tamil Nadu have also started recording rains. At present, Kanchipuram and adjoining areas are receiving thundershowers activities.

However, these activities will not persist for long and by tomorrow, we expect weather activities to decrease gradually. As the weather system weaken, dry weather would again return to Coastal Tamil Nadu.

Pre-Monsoon rain in Chennai would once again return as we are expecting a low pressure area in Bay of Bengal. Models are indicating that the system would intensify further into depression and move towards Coastal Tamil Nadu.

Chennai to battle sultry and hot weather, pre-Monsoon rains to pick up by April 29

Chennai Weather post

The capital city of Tamil Nadu, Chennai has been observing dry and sultry weather conditions for the last many days. As a result, day temperatures have been settling around 36˚C. Being a coastal station, such high day maximums along with high humidity levels, the weather becomes unbearable during the afternoon hours.

However, interior parts of Tamil Nadu have been receiving on and off thundershower activities. At present, a confluence zone is extending from Jharkhand to interior parts of Tamil Nadu across Telangana and South Interior Karnataka. Therefore, scattered rain and thundershowers would continue over the interior parts of Tamil Nadu.

However, weather in Chennai will remain dry and hot, with sky conditions being partly cloudy. Maximum and minimum temperatures of the city are likely to settle around 36 degree Celsius and 29 degree Celsius, respectively.

After two days, this confluence zone will weaken leading to almost dry and hot weather conditions over entire Tamil Nadu on April 24.

However, slight relief is in sight by the early next week. As per weathermen, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean. This weather system will gradually intensify into a depression and move northwestwards towards Tamil Nadu Coast. Thus, between April 29 and 30, coastal parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai and Puducherry may receive scattered rain and thundershower activities due to the above weather system.

Currently, the models are just indicating the weather system but its track and intensity cannot be predicted accurately as of now. At times, weather systems in Bay of Bengal re-curve in northeast direction as well before reaching Tamil Nadu coast. But Skymet Weather will keep a watch and update you from time to time about the movement of this weather system.

Pre-Monsoon rains in Kochi, Trivandrum, Kozhikode, Punalur and Thrissur to continue

Rain in Kerala

Kerala, the largest rain contributor during the Pre-Monsoon season for South India, performed very poorly in March with a deficiency of 53%. Following the same trend, the rainfall deficiency increased further and by mid-April, Kerala was 70% rain deficient.

However, from April 16 and 17, marginal increase in weather activities was observed and good Pre-Monsoon rains finally arrived over many parts of the state. Rains intensified further between April 18 and 21, increasing the spread as well as the intensity.

For the last three to four days, the state has been witnessing fairly widespread rain and thundershower activities accompanied with strong winds. This has also signification dropped the rainfall deficiency of Kerala to 32%.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram recorded 20 mm of rain, followed by Trivandrum 13.2 mm, Kuppady in Wayanad 10 mm and Nilambur in Malappuram 6.2 mm.

These weather activities have been attributed to the wind discontinuity or a trough extending across parts of Kerala and its adjoining states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Along with this an embedded cyclonic circulation is also seen over Comorin area.

Today also, we expect scattered light to moderate rain and thundershowers to occur in parts of Kerala, especially the southern districts such as Trivandrum, Kochi, Alappuzha, Kozhikode, Punalur and Thrissur.

Thereafter, tomorrow onwards, rainfall activities will gradually start decreasing over the state and for the coming three to four days, any significant rains will not be witnessed by Kerala. But still isolated rains cannot be ruled out during that time.
