Khargone hottest city, heat wave like conditions in Punjab, Haryana, Bikaner and Nagpur

Heat Wave Across India

Three days back light rain and thunderstorm activity with dust storm was observed in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh. These weather activities pulled down the temperatures marginally in the region to give some relief from the heat. The national capital Delhi has however been witnessing heat wave like conditions and the temperatures are soaring, with maximum settling close to 43 degrees yesterday.

On April 26, Khargone in Madhya Pradesh was the hottest city in the country with the day temperature settling at a sizzling 46.6 degrees Celsius while Chandrapur in Maharashtra saw the maximum settle at 45.6 degrees.

According to meteorologists at Skymet, the day temperatures are expected to touch or go beyond 45 degrees at many places in Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha in the next 2-3 days. While, maximums in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, interior Odisha and Telangana would either touch 40 or settle beyond the mark. Delhi too is likely to face this unbearable heat.

In the absence of any weather activity and bright clear sky, Delhi might see the maximum soaring to touch 43 degrees Celsius. Parts of Haryana like Sirsa, Bhiwani, Fatehabad and Hisar would get to witness heat wave like conditions. Sri Ganganagar, Churu, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Barmer, Nagaur and Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan would face similar weather conditions. Gujarat too would be seeing the day temperature settling at an extremely uncomfortable level of 44 degrees Celsius.

Khargone, Khandwa, Ujjain, Betul, Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh would also witness heat wave type conditions. Vidarbha as usual is going to remain hot and dry for the next 2-3 days. Places like Akola, Amravati, Nagpur, Chandrapur, Jalgaon, Malegaon would see a rising trend in the mercury. Marathwada regions like Hingoli, Jalna and Telangana areas adjacent to Vidarbha will be observing severe heat wave conditions.

Since there is no weather activity for the coming three to four days, hot weather will be at it's peak in almost the entire country. People are therefore advised to take proper care and help themselves with ample amount of fluid.

Storm Fani to become a severe cyclone by Sunday, second since 1891 in April

Cyclone Fani track

Cyclone Fani is the maiden tropical storm of 2019 for Indian seas that made an appearance on Saturday evening or late night. But that is not all, system is showing signs of intensification and may become a severe cyclonic storm as well by Sunday itself. If this happens, it would be the second storm since 1891 in Bay of Bengal to become a severe cyclone.

Before this, Cyclone Mala that formed on April 25, 2006 was the only storm that had attained the status of extremely severe cyclone. Other than this, we have seen only 11 cyclones in the month of April.

As per weathermen, we rarely see any cyclonic storms brewing in Indian seas during the first half of April but even the second half of April have not seen big numbers.

At present, the system which was seen as a deep depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean, has now intensified into a cyclonic storm on Saturday afternoon. It is presently centered at Latitude 5.4°N and Longitude 88.5°E, about 870 km east-southeast of Colombo, Sri Lanka, 1200 km southeast of Chennai and 1440 km southsoutheast of Machilipatnam.

The system is travelling in very conducive environment and thus is likely to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm during the next 24 hours.

By this time, the system would track northwest off Sri Lanka coast during next 72 hours and would start affecting the weather over coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh by April 29 or 30.

Amidst rising temperatures, caution extended for heat wave like conditions in Delhi

Dry and hot weather conditions are prevailing in Delhi-NCR for the last few days. The day temperature has been rising continuously and creating records. Yesterday, the Safdarjung Observatory (Base Observatory for records) saw the maximum settle at a sizzling 41.9°C, while in Palam the day temperature recorded was 42.2°C.

Since, no significant weather systems are approaching or passing close to Delhi, dry northwesterly winds will continue to prevail in the city for the next 48 to 72 hours. Since these winds are dry and warm in nature, the temperatures are bound to rise further. Moreover, the blowing hot winds correspond to ‘Loo’.

Due to the rising temperature and dust in suspension, the pollution levels will worsen as well. This might be recorded in ‘moderate’ to ‘poor’ category.

Pre-monsoon rain in Jammu-Kashmir,Himachal and Uttrakhand

A rainy week kick starts in Northeast with Meghalaya, Assam and Tripura receiving light rains

Northeast India was not receiving any weather activity since the last few days but as predicted by Skymet, scattered rains have commenced over many parts of northeastern states yesterday onward. Many Northeast states including that of Meghalaya, Assam and Tripura are reporting light to moderate rainfall activity.

The weather activity will increase in intensity now with several areas of Northeast India observing decent spell of rain. Initially the intensity will be more in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Nagaland. Thereafter, it will spread to other parts as well. Intermittent activities will continue with light to moderate spell in the region. Isolated heavy rain may also be observed during this period.

At present, a Cyclonic Circulation is over Assam and its adjoining area. And an Anti-Cyclone has once again formed over North Bay of Bengal which will help in moisture incursion to Northeast India. Due to the combined effect of these weather systems and increased moisture from the Bay of Bengal, we expect these pre-Monsoon activities to continue over the northeast region for at least next 5 to 6 days.

A Cyclone is also forming over the Bay of Bengal which is likely to move along the eastern coast and in process give more rains to the northeastern part of the country.

Fresh spell of pre Monsoon rain in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal and Uttarakhand on April 29

Pre Monsoon Rain over the North Hills

During the pre-Monsoon season, there are two pockets that contribute the most to the overall percentage of rainfall in the country, one is the hills of North India, other is the northeastern part of the country. The month of March receives more pre-Monsoon rain in comparison to April.

This season so far, the hills have underperformed. Rain in Jammu and Kashmir is deficient by 42%, while in Himachal Pradesh it is deficient by 47% and in Uttarakhand by 16% (+/-19% considered normal). According to meteorologists at Skymet, the rain bearing weather systems -Western Disturbances- have been frequent but they have not been intense and active this pre- Monsoon.

According to weatherman, the Western Disturbance that was prevalent in the hills has cleared after giving rain in the region from April 23-25. The maximum activity during this period in terms of rainfall was seen on April 24, reducing in intensity by April 25.

During this spell, Jammu and Kashmir turned out to be the main beneficiary. The system has now cleared up but the remnants of this system might again give some weather activity in the region starting April 29 in terms of rain and clouding.

The weather activity is likely to become more widespread between April 30 and May 1. Similar conditions are going to prevail in the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. But its intensity and spread will be more over Jammu and Kashmir.

The higher reaches of the hills might witness snowfall while the lower and mid-reaches would get to see rain and thundershowers with strong winds of 40-50 kmph. During this period, activities like thunderstorm and lightning cannot be ruled out either.

Also, in the absence of any weather activity, the coming day starting today would witness rise in temperatures.
