Cyclone Fani, the most powerful storm in India after Super Cyclone in 1999

Cyclone Fani finally made landfall in Odisha's Puri district. At the time of landfall, the wind speed was in the bracket of 180-190 kmph, gusting up to 200-220 kmph at times. The authorities have already moved about million people to safety in temporary shelters and people are advised to not head outdoors.

As reiterated earlier, Fani was just short of a strength of Super Cyclonic storm. In fact, the kind of cloud configuration, wind speed and eye it was sustaining, Fani is now the strongest cyclonic storm since the Super Cyclone that had struck India in 1999. It had also made landfall at Puri that had claimed about 10,000 lives.

The cyclone is likely to affect around 10,000 villages and more than 50 towns in its path. More than 140 trains have been cancelled so far keeping in view the cyclone’s trail. All flights from Bhubaneswar had been cancelled since yesterday midnight.

The Extremely Severe Cyclone Fani has already given some torrential rain in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, while West Bengal is now gearing up for some heavy rains. Already a few videos were seen emerging from West Bengal yesterday as a precursor to intensity of the blowing winds-

After creating havoc in Odisha the cyclone will start losing its intensity and will move in north-northeastward direction towards the West Bengal coast. Fani has already weakened into a very severe cyclone by afternoon. But it is likely to reach West Bengal as a cyclonic storm, thus powerful enough to give torrential rains and high velocity winds.

According to the sources,12,000 poles, 50 cranes, 40 pole drilling machines, 40 generators, 70 power saws, 2,000 transformers, wires, conductors, cross arms, insulators were already sent to the cyclone-affected places and in addition, other necessary items are being procured.

Cyclone Fani: Squally winds, heavy rain in Kolkata and Coastal West Bengal begin, torrential showers ahead

Having spent days building up its strength in Bay of Bengal, the extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani finally stuck the Odisha Coast near Puri around 08:40 AM on May 3, 2019. At the time of landfall, Fani was sustaining speed of 180-190 kmph gusting up to 200-210 kmph.

According to media reports, around five people have lost lives due to this devastating storm. This was after when the state authorities had evacuated around one million people on May 2.  The cyclone Fani has already given torrential rain and strong winds across coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal.

Fani is presently centered near Latitude 19.1°N and Longitude 85.5°E, about 85 km south/southwest of Puri (Odisha), 70 km east/southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha) and about 390 km south/southwest of Digha (West Bengal).

This system is now heading further north/northeastwards towards West Bengal. But as the system will be now travelling inland it will gradually start weakening. According to weathermen, it is presently seen as a very severe cyclonic storm. However, it will continue to sustain the strength of a cyclonic storm by the time it reaches West Bengal.

In fact, heavy rains and squally winds have already started lashing parts of West Bengal and Kolkata. As the Fani moves closer, It rains would pick up pace and heavy to very heavy rains are likely over several parts of Kolkata and West Bengal.

Thousands of passengers were stranded in Howrah and Sealdah railway station as the South Eastern Railways cancelled 233 trains to Odisha/ Digha to prevent any mishaps. The Kolkata airport will also shut all operations from 6 pm on Friday till 9.30pm on Saturday. The airport is partially functioning as of now.

RAIN WARNING: Moderate rains with very heavy to extremely heavy falls at isolated places are very likely over coastal & and adjoining districts of West Bengal on May 3. Heavy to very falls at isolated places over Gangetic West Bengal on May 4 will also occur.

WIND WARNING: Squally wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 85 kmph are very likely along & off West Bengal Coast by  May 3 afternoon and become 90-100 kmph gusting to 115 kmph on May 4 early morning.

Thus, we can say that, torrential rains accompanied with strong gusty winds are all set to make their appearance in the constituencies of West Bengal. In fact, districts of Bankura, Malda, Hooghly, Kolkata, Midnapore, Nadia, Howrah and Krishna Sagar have been put under RED ALERT.

Though the effect of cyclone Fani is yet to be seen in Bengal, the district administration has declared high alert to be prepared against a storm-like situation. As the day began, the wind speed increased with a light bout of rain.

Extremely Severe Cyclone Fani is all set to make landfall at Puri coast in Odisha any time now. Fani is just 40 km far away from the coast. The maximum sustained winds with the cyclonic storm is 180-190 kmph gusting up to 200-220 kmph.

However, interaction with land has led to slight weakening of extremely severe cyclone Fani, as the eye of the system has almost vanished. According to weathermen, the system is now travelling in unfavourable weather conditions of high vertical wind shear, cold sea surface temperatures and reduction of moisture due to the proximity of the coast.

Meanwhile, extremely heavy rains have already started lashing the coastal parts of Odisha. Squally winds to the tune of 90 kmph are already reaching the coast. The speed would increase significantly in order of 190-200 kmph, gusting up to 210-220 kmph as the cyclone Fani makes landfall on Friday morning.

Dust storm and thundershower activities to lash parts of Delhi in the next few days

Delhi has been experiencing dry and hot weather conditions since April 18. In fact, on April 30, Delhi witnessed highest temperatures of the season. While the Palam observatory equaled the all-time record of 45.3°C  which was established in the year 1970, Safdarjung observatory also recorded highest temperature since, April 30 in 2010.

During the last two days, temperatures have decreased to some extent as easterly winds have commenced over Delhi and NCR. At present, A Cyclonic Circulation is present south of Delhi over Northeast Rajasthan and adjoining areas.

Now, due to the influence of Cyclone Fani, easterly winds from Bay of Bengal are expected over Northern Plains including Delhi and NCR up to the height of 10,000 ft.

Whenever, temperatures are high, and humidity increases it leads to instability in the atmosphere. Due to this, thunderclouds develop which are capable of giving dust storm and isolated light thundershower.

We already witnessed isolated dust storm activity over Delhi and NCR yesterday evening. Apart from this, on and off pre-Monsoon activities are expected to occur on May 3 and 4 over Delhi and NCR.

These weather activities will reduce the maximum temperatures over Delhi and NCR. Minimums may also fall due to the dust storm activities.

By May 5, the humid easterly winds will be replaced by dry and hot winds from Northwest leading to clearance of weather, clear sky and bright sunshine. The temperatures will once again increase due to these winds.

Odisha evacuates nearly million people as Cyclone Fani to make landfall Friday morning

Rain in India

The time has finally arrived as the Extremely Severe Cyclone Fani has reached closest to the Indian coast. Fani is presently centered near Latitude 17.3°N and Longitude 84.8°E and is exactly abeam Visakhapatnam with distance of mere 150 km. Meanwhile, it is about 300 km south of Puri, Odisha.

Ever since, it has recurved, Fani has been maintaining a good speed of about 15-20 kmph for the last 24 hours. According to weathermen, systems usually pick up pace after they re-curve. Thus, Fani is also most likely to move at a faster pace.

We now expect extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani to make a landfall earlier than expected i.e. anytime after 10 am on Friday near Puri coast. At the time of crossing the coast, heavy to extremely heavy rains are likely along with damage potential winds with speed to the tune of 175-185 Kmph gusting up to 205 kmph. Sea surge would be high between 12 ft and 18 ft above the astronomical tide.

Districts like Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Khordha, Cuttack and Jajpur would bear the maximum brunt of Cyclone Fani
Looking at the features of the system, it was observed that cyclone Fani has got more marked in the last 24 hours. The first indication to this was the formation of the clear eye of the storm, which has been maintaining diameter of 20 km.

At present, the winds inside the cyclone is around 180 kmph gusting up to 200 kmph. In fact, it is just short of super cyclone, which sustains the winds of 222 kmph. Fani is the most severe cyclone in Indian Sea after the super cyclone of 1999 that had hit Odisha and claimed around 10,000 lives.

Therefore, Fani is most likely to make landfall as extremely severe cyclone only, although intensity of coast might weaken it slightly.

Looking at this, state authorities have launched massive evacuation drive and nearly million people have been evacuated and shifted to shelter homes. Army, Air Force, and Navy along with several teams of NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) are already in action for undertaking rescue and relief work.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also held a meeting with to review preparedness on the ground ahead of Cyclone Fani.

Extensive damage to kutcha houses, uprooting of trees, snapping of communication and power poles, disruption of rail and road link are likely.

Cyclone Fani 150 km away from Vizag, very heavy rains and strong winds to lash Andhra tonight

Moving northeastwards, the Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Fani has now reached very close to the Indian coast. It is presently centered near Latitude 17.3°N and  Longitude 84.8°E, exactly abeam Visakhapatnam with distance of mere 150 km. Meanwhile, it is about 300 km away from Puri, Odisha.

As a result, rains are now likely to intensify across North Andhra Pradesh coast and we can expect some heavy to extremely heavy showers over places like Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Vishakhapatnam. These rains would be accompanied with strong winds, which would also now take dangerous turn. We expect, strong winds to continue over coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh.

Also Read: Cyclone Fani: Checkout the districts on alert in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal

According to weathermen, the next 24 hours are crucial for Northern districts of Andhra Pradesh. We expect wind speed in the order of 80-100 kmph gusting to 130-140 kms over northern parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh in the next 24 hours. Wind velocity will be more over northern parts of Andhra Pradesh as compared to the southern ones.

During all this time the sea conditions will be rough to very rough until May 4. Precaution should be taken especially in the north-coastal districts as these areas fall in outer periphery of the cyclone.

We do not expect much rains over southern parts of Andhra Pradesh, but the sky will remain cloudy to overcast with a dense cloud cover.

After 24 hours, the rain intensity will start reducing but scattered light rains, will continue. Wind speed will also start decreasing as the Cyclone Fani makes a landfall over Puri in Odisha during the morning or forenoon hours on May 3.

As it makes a landfall, the cyclone will start losing its strength while moving in northeast direction away from Andhra Pradesh. After the Cyclone Fani starts moving away, cloud cover will take over the entire state. Due to this, the temperatures will fall marginally, and thus pleasant and comfortable weather is expected for the next two to three days before dry and sultry weather once again takes over.

Northeast India braces up for heavy rains between May 4-5 as Cyclone Fani nears

Rain in northeast and east india

The northeastern states of India especially Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh have been witnessing widespread rain and thundershower activities from the last four to five days. In fact, Cherrapunji in Meghalaya is continuously recording heavy 3-digit rainfall activity since the last three days.

The reason for these weather activities has been attributed to the cyclonic circulation persisting over Assam and a trough extending from East Bihar to Manipur. Moreover, enough moisture feed is available from Bay of Bengal.

Now, the Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm 'FANI' over West central Bay of Bengal has moved north/northeastwards, coming closure to the Indian coast. It is centered near Latitude 17.3°N and  Longitude 84.8°E, about 300 Km south-southwest of Puri, Odisha, 150 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh and 500 km south-southwest of Digha, West Bengal.

Fani is expected to make landfall over Odisha coast near Puri by the morning or the forenoon hours of May 3, with maximum sustained wind speed of 170-180 Kmph gusting to 200 Kmph.

In wake of cyclone Fani, winds will converge around that weather system, leading to decrease in moisture feed over the northeastern states. But after making landfall, the cyclone will continue its journey in northeast direction towards the northeastern states and reach over Assam as a Depression on May 5.

Cyclone Fani track

Between May 4 and 5, we expect heavy to very heavy rains over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam and Meghalaya. Along with this, moderate to heavy rains will also lash rest of Northeast India. These rains will be accompanied with violent thunderstorm activities and intense lightning strikes.

These rains will be of destructive nature as they have the potential to trigger flash floods and water logging at many places. The terrain of northeast India is such that whenever there are very heavy rains it leads to local floods.
