Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan all set to witness longest Pre Monsoon rain epsiode of season

Rain in North India

The states of Punjab, Haryana, and North Rajasthan saw some good rains around May 3 and 4. However, thereafter, dry weather has been persisting over the region with temperatures settling above normal or around the normal.

Moreover, there have been several stations that saw yesterday’s maximums touching the highest point for the first time this season. For instance, Ambala settled at 41.4°C (four degrees above normal,), Chandigarh 40.4°C, Amritsar 40.2°C, Patiala 42°C, Sri Ganganagar 45.6°C, and Churu 45.5°C.

A similar situation is likely to continue on May 8 and 9. May 10 onward, the weather activity will build up for quite a number of days.

For the first three days, i.e. between May 10 and 12, weather activity will be mostly limited to thunderstorms, lightning, and dust storm over Punjab, Haryana and North Rajasthan. Delhi and the NCR region will also see rains during this time. Meanwhile, between May 13 and 16, widespread rains and thundershowers are expected over these areas as both intensity and spread of weather activities will increase. Even May 17 may see some showers.

These rains will be attributed to the upcoming successive Western Disturbances and their induced Circulations which will first begin rains in the hills of North India.

During this time, temperatures will drop, and summer heat and heat wave like conditions, which are prevailing in pockets will take a backseat. Temperatures are likely to drop around below normal around 35 degrees Celsius or so. Moreover, the foothills may see these temperatures dropping even below 35 degrees.

This upcoming rainfall episode will be the longest Pre Monsoon spell for the region and will be spread to many areas.

Northwest India enjoys Pre Monsoon season a little longer than the rest of the regions. Moreover, Pre Monsoon extends over the plains of North India beyond the months of May as Southwest Monsoon does not arrive until fag end of June and in some places, even during the first week of July.

However, temperatures during the month of June are way better as compared to the months of May, which is undoubtedly the hottest. June happens to be a shade better since other adjoining areas see the arrival of Monsoon due to which wind direction changes resulting in a marginal drop of temperatures.

Pre-Monsoon showers to help in abatement of heat wave from parts of Maharashtra

Heat wave and Maharashtra

Isolated pockets of Vidarbha are still under the grip of heat wave conditions. However, due to the blowing of southwesterly winds, temperatures have dropped over Madhya Maharashtra and parts of Vidarbha in the last 24 hours. These winds have helped in abatement of heat wave from the western parts of Vidarbha.

In fact, these humid winds are originating from the North Arabian Sea and travelling via Gujarat towards North Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha. According to meteorologists, dry weather conditions would continue over the entire state till May 10. Thereafter, light rains are expected to commence in Marathwada and Vidarbha from May 11.

Possibility of light rains over isolated places of South Madhya Maharashtra during this period cannot be ruled out. Thereafter, weather would turn dry from May 13. While, on May 16 and 17, there are chances of light rains over the state. These rains would be in the wake of a trough over Vidarbha, Marathwada and would extend up till Interior Karnataka.

Heat wave conditions will continue to persist in parts of Vidarbha for two more days, abating thereafter due to the upcoming spell of rain. The day temperatures will scale down by 3-4 degrees and hover around the 40 degrees Celsius mark.

Dust storm and rain in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad and Ghaziabad from May 10

May is the hottest month for the National Capital Region as the average normal maximum temperature of the city during this month ranges between 39˚ to 40˚C.

During this season, on April 30, both Palam and Safdarjung observatories recorded their highest maximum temperature of 45.3˚C and 43.7˚C, respectively. Thereafter, due to back-to-back spells of rain and thundershower activities, the day temperature in Delhi-NCR dropped significantly.

Now since the last 3 days, in the wake of dry weather conditions, day temperatures in Delhi and NCR are increasing continuously. Yesterday, Delhi’s Safdarjung Observatory (Base observatory) recorded its maximum temperature at 41.3˚C, which was about 3 degrees above normal.

Today also we expect the maximum temperatures of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad and Ghaziabad to rise and settle 2 to 3 degrees above normal.

However, relief is in sight for the National Capital Region from May 10 as a fresh spell of pre-Monsoon activity is likely to commence over the region. Initially on May 10 and 11, dust storm and thunderstorm activity will affect Delhi and NCR.

But moving further, the intensity and spread of these weather activities will increase. And from May 12 and 13, widespread rain and thundershowers accompanied with strong winds will be witnessed in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad and Ghaziabad.

As it is the pre-Monsoon season, these rains will take place mostly during late afternoon or evening hours. Due to widespread rain, significant drop will be observed in both day and night temperatures of the region.

Rain over hills

Fresh spell of rain in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Manali, Shimla, Mussoorie and Nainital likely soon

Pre Monsoon Rain over the North Hills

A fresh Western Disturbance is currently seen over North Afghanistan and adjoining parts of Pakistan. This system has also induced a cyclonic circulation that lies over central parts of Pakistan. These systems will start affecting parts of North India from May 10.

But light rain and thundershower was observed at isolated places in Jammu and Kashmir such as Srinagar and its nearby areas in the last 24 hours.

From May 10, the spread and intensity of the weather activity will increase and good rain along with thundershower will be observed in the hill states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Between May 11 and 16, successive Western Disturbances will keep affecting the Western Himalayas and widespread weather activities will occur over most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and few parts of Uttarakhand. In fact, few intense showers may also occur over these areas.

These successive weather systems will be a rare scenario, as in the month of May such intense Western Disturbances are very rare. But this spell will be prolonged and widespread.

Isolated snowfall over the upper reaches cannot be ruled out. As whenever there is continuous rainfall, temperatures of the region drop and lead to snow in the higher latitudes.

All the main tourist destinations like Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Shimla, Manali, Kullu, Mussoorie, Haridwar, Nainital and Dehradun will observe rain and thundershower activities. Due to significant fall in day temperature, the weather over these places will become pleasant. Rain may also be observed in Vaishno Devi and Katra.

Due to continuous weather activities, after May 13, incidents of mudslides and landslides may take place, which may cause disruption to tourist and local people.

Northeastern states to witness another spell of pre-Monsoon rain starting tomorrow

Since the last two days pre-Monsoon rain and thundershower activities have reduced over the northeastern states i.e. Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. However, parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have been witnessing on and off weather activities. But rest all the states remained almost dry.

Now from tomorrow i.e. May 9, pre-Monsoon rains will once resume over the northeastern states and widespread good spell of rain and thundershowers will affect the Northeast region. These weather activities will continue for the coming one week or so.

The reason for these widespread and prolonged weather activities can be attributed to the moisture incursion will remain intact from Bay of Bengal in the form of southerly/southwesterly winds. Moreover, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over Arunachal Pradesh and adjoining area.

During this rainy spell, we expect one or two heavy spells of rain and thundershowers. In fact, lightning strikes may also occur in few parts of Northeast India.

Northeast India is once again is all set to witness pre-Monsoon rains again, which will help cover up and large rainfall deficiency of states like Mizoram to some extent. Weather over the region will not completely dry now.

Weather Forecast May 8: Rain in Bengaluru and Chennai, dry weather in Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai

To begin with North India, a fresh Western Disturbance lies over North Afghanistan. Its induced cyclonic circulation is over Central Pakistan. Thus, weather in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh will remain mainly dry with isolated patchy rains. Meanwhile, due to hot winds from north/northwest direction, we expect weather of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh to remain dry and hot.

Weather will be dry with clear sky over entire Central India. Heat wave conditions are expected to cover some more parts of Rajasthan, Vidarbha, Marathwada and Madhya Pradesh. Temperatures of Gujarat will settle near normal.

In east/northeast India, a cyclonic circulation is seen over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. A trough is extending across West Bengal and Odisha. Therefore, scattered light to moderate rains will continue over parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and northeastern states. Weather of Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha will be dry. Isolated rains may occur in Coastal Odisha.

Down south, a north-south trough is running across Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. A cyclonic circulation lies over Tamil Nadu. Therefore, light to moderate rains with few intense spells will occur over Interior Tamil Nadu and South Interior Karnataka including Bengaluru and Chennai. Kerala, Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh may also witness rains.

Click the image below to see the live lightning and thunderstorm across IndiaRain in India
