Intermittent rain in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for next three days

A trough is currently extending from eastern parts of Bihar up to interior Karnataka across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Due to this system, we expect intermittent rain to commence over coastal parts of Andhra Pradesh and parts of Telangana for at least next two to three days.

Abatement of heat wave in Andhra Pradesh

Heat wave conditions which were prevailing in coastal Andhra Pradesh will now subside due to the upcoming weather activity in terms of rain, thundershower and clouding. These pre-Monsoon activities usually occur during late afternoon and evening hours. In view of the changing weather, the night temperatures are expected to drop by at least two to three degrees. But being a coastal area, the humidity will continue to remain high and the discomfort might persist because the rainfall activity is not going to be widespread.

Rain in Telangana

Although the trough is mainly passing through Andhra Pradesh but its influence will also be seen in adjacent Telangana in form of scattered showers. These rains will take place today and tomorrow and will be mainly isolated in spread.

The intensity of rain over Telangana will be much less than Andhra Pradesh. Telangana too is expected to see relief from the ongoing hot weather conditions.

6 reasons why India needs its politicians to talk about environment

Every other party might be mentioning climate and environment in their manifestos, but anyone is hardly discussing the issue publicly. Moreover, this is the first time in India that a term such as climate change has been used. As a matter of fact, manifestos never manage to make it to the media headlines, however every other word said in the public rallies does. In the fault is not just politicians but our media as well which forgets mentioning climate every time, though its such a big issue.

Here we will put together 5 reasons why Indian politicians need to start putting environment as a priority in their to-do list-

  1. Greenpeace International in 2019 highlights that out of 20 most polluted cities in the world, 15 are in India. All four satellite cities surrounding New Delhi - Gurugram, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Noida were placed in the top six while the national capital itself, was placed at 11 out of 20. Yes, Delhi Pollution is a thing!
  2. Lancet Planetary Health in 2018, revealed that in 2017 about 12.4 lakh people died in India, reason- air pollution. Not to forget that this figure is related to the deaths only due to ‘air’ pollution, not all the environmental hazards.
  3. According to the report, it is estimated that about 600 million Indians face high to extreme levels of water stress, and that about two lakh people die each year due to inadequate access to safe water. The situation is likely to deteriorate by 2030 as the water demand further increases.
  4. According to an article published in Mumbai Mirror, it is estimated that only 48% of the total discharge received by the one of the biggest rivers of India, Ganga is partially or fully treated.
  5. The 2018 Global Environmental Performance Index placed India at 177 out of 180 countries, down more than 20 spots from 155 in 2014.
  6. The World Bank calculates that India spends $221bn every year, that is 8.5 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) on pollution-related healthcare.

Its high time we start using climate in the election campaigns. Also, we as voters need to choose our leaders wisely.

Pre-Monsoon showers to drench entire Northeast India soon

Pre Monsoon Showers in Northeast India

Since the last few days, moderate to heavy showers are being witnessed in the northern districts of Northeast India like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya. Due to these rains, Assam and Meghalaya which were hugely deficient during the month of April have now become surplus by 2%. While, rain deficiency in Arunachal Pradesh at present stands at 38%. The southern states of Northeast India like Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are currently deficient by 42% due to lack of any good rainfall activity.

Currently, a Cyclonic Circulation is over Bangladesh and humid winds from the Bay of Bengal are feeding moisture to the region. These unstable weather conditions help in giving rains over Northeast India.

According to meteorologists moderate to heavy rains are expected to continue over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya. In the coming 24 hours, scattered rains would be seen over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura as well with lesser intensity

Thus, we can say that good rains are in the offing for Northeast India for at least one week. Thereafter, there can be drop in rainfall activities, but intermittent pre-Monsoon showers would continue until the commencement of Monsoon. The normal onset date of Monsoon in Northeast India is June 1 and by June 5, most parts of the region begin receiving good rain.

Cyclone Lili forms near Indonesia, heavy rains over island of Timor

Cyclone Lili

The Depression which had been causing hefty rains over eastern parts of Indonesia has now turned into a Tropical cyclone named as Lili.

Cyclone Lili at 8:30 in the morning hours was near Latitude 9.9 degrees South and Longitude 129.1 degrees East. The system is located around 189 nautical miles northwest of Darwin, Australia and is moving in a south-southwest direction around 10kmph during the last six hours.

Lili will recurve towards the west in next six hours and will continue westwards journey until tomorrow morning when it will make a landfall in and around Timor. The system is moving in a favorable environment, with low vertical wind shear, and sea surface temperatures are also high.

However, now soon dry air will start entering and upper level convergence is expected to hinder further development and it would weaken. At present, the wind speed is around 80-90 kmph and would continue with same intensity at the time of landfall as well, gusting up to 90-100 kmph.

Cyclone Lili will shift to the south as well as west during the next two days and is likely to weaken and become insignificant before affecting Western Australia.

However, heavy rain is expected and the possibility of flooding over the island of Timor in the coming days cannot be ruled out. However, winds will not be strong enough to damage anything else.

Areas to be impacted will include Alor, Belu, Ende, Flores Timur, Kupang, Manggarai, Ngada, Sikka, West Sumba, East Sumba, Timor Tengah Selatan, Timor Tengah Utara of the southern island of Indonesia.
