Pre-Monsoon showers in Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema for 2 days, rain deficit to stay

Pre Monsoon in Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema

Pre-Monsoon rains so far have been scanty over Andhra Pradesh. For instance, Coastal Andhra Pradesh is rain deficient by 31%, while Rayalaseema is observing a deficiency of 45%. However, coastal areas of the state have been receiving intermittent pre-Monsoon rain and thundershowers activities mainly during afternoon and evening hours.

According to meteorologists at Skymet, temperatures over Coastal Andhra Pradesh remained significantly above normal till May 6, resulting in heat wave to severe heat wave conditions especially over Kakinada and adjoining parts.

Thereafter, due to commencement of southerly and south-easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, temperatures have dropped by three to four degrees leading to abatement of heat wave from May 8 onward.

Now, a north-south trough is running from Bihar up to Tamil Nadu across Telangana and it will keep oscillating east-west. It may pass via Andhra Pradesh, therefore, on and off pre-Monsoon rain is expected to continue over Coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next two days.

The experts have to say that these activities will be mainly during afternoon or evening hours and will be highly localised. Thus, patchy rains are expected over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and isolated over Rayalaseema. These rains will not make much difference in the persisting rainfall deficiency. Thus, it will not be wrong to say that pre-Monsoon season might end on a deficient note for Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.

Meerut, Bareilly, Purnia and Araria to witness dust storm and thundershowers for next 3-4 days

Dust storm in UP, Bihar

At present, preMonsoon rain in East Uttar Pradesh deficient by 53%, whereas rainfall in West Uttar Pradesh is deficient by 33%. This is due to Western Disturbances that induce Cyclonic Circulations in the northern plains, which travel up to West Uttar Pradesh confining pre-Monsoon activities to the region itself. Hence, rains are more in West Uttar Pradesh in comparison to East Uttar Pradesh.

On the other hand, its adjoining state Bihar is surplus by 13%. The main contributor Cyclone Fani after making landfall over Odisha travelled towards West Bengal and gave heavy rains over eastern parts of Bihar. Moreover, the remnants of Western Disturbance that travels along the foothills towards northeast gives some rain over the foothills of East Bihar. Araria, Katihar, Purnia, Supaul and Bhagalpur will observe these activities. A Cyclonic Circulation is currently over East Bihar and a trough is extending up to the southern peninsula.

Therefore, light scattered rains are expected over the foothills and eastern parts of Bihar during next two to three days with less intensity. Chances of lightning strikes during the pre-Monsoon season is less due to the absence of convective clouds. While, on the other hand, successive Western Disturbances are expected to continue throughout the week over Western Himalayas that would induce Cyclonic Circulation over the northern plains. Also, a trough would extend up to West Uttar Pradesh leading to dust storm and thundershower activities over West and Central Uttar Pradesh for next three to four days. Places like Meerut, Bareilly, Saharanpur, Hardoi, Bulandshahar and Moradabad would be affected.

Once again, the intensity would be less, and these pre-Monsoon activities will be in patches that would last for short duration. As the weather system begins travelling towards East Uttar Pradesh, it would start loosing its moisture content. Hence, isolated light rains over East Uttar Pradesh would be a sight. Thus, we can say that intermittent rain and thundershowers would continue over Uttar Pradesh and Bihar for next 3-4 days.

Barmer receives double its monthly rain in 24 hours, temperatures in Jaisalmer, Jodhpur to be under check

Weather in Jodhpur

The western parts of Rajasthan hardly see any Pre Monsoon rains. Cities of Jaisalmer, Barmer and Jodhpur are three cities where heat is the dominant factor instead of the rainfall activity. In fact, temperatures going above the 40 degrees Celsius over these parts of Rajasthan is quite a normal affair.

While other parts of North India see the peak of Pre Monsoon activity, there is hardly any rains in the western parts. In fact, the average rains for Barmer is at 4 mm in April, and 11.4 mm in May. Similar rain figures stand for Jaisalmer as well as the city of Jodhpur.

However, the last 24 hours have given good rains over Barmer. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, the city recorded 26 mm rains which is more than double the amount of its monthly rainfall. Traces of rains have also been seen in Jaisalmer and Jodhpur.

Due to these weather conditions, temperatures have dipped over the trio cities of Jaisalmer, Barmer and Jodhpur. Yesterday, the maximum in Jaisalmer settled at 39.4 degrees, Jodhpur 38.2 degrees and Barmer at 40.6 degrees Celsius.

Now also, temperatures are not likely to shoot up and heat wave conditions will stay away for a while after which some rains are expected to make an appearance once again on May 16 and 17.

This time, there have been quite a few good spells of rains wherein usually these areas see intense heat during this time. Moreover, West Rajasthan is at present in the excess category while other parts of the country are observing deficient rains.

Pre-Monsoon rains to reduce heat wave from Vidarbha, Telangana and Chhattisgarh

Heat wave and Maharashtra

At present, most parts of the country including North, Northwest, East, Northeast and South India are experiencing pre-Monsoon weather activities in the form of rain, thundershowers, dust storm and thunderstorm activities. These weather activities are also affecting parts of Central India with isolated rains.

Therefore, in the wake of continuous rains, extreme heat is being observed only in limited parts of India. Currently, very few parts of Vidarbha, Telangana and South Chhattisgarh are reeling under heat wave like condition with day temperatures settling near 45˚C.

Yesterday, Brahmapuri recorded a maximum temperature of 45.6˚C, followed by Chandrapur in Maharashtra and Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh at 45.0˚C, Durg 44.6˚C, Nagpur in Maharashtra and Ramagundam in Telangana saw the day temperature settle at 44.0˚C, Adilabad, Malegaon and Parbhani sizzled at 43.8˚C.

In the coming days the ongoing pre-Monsoon rains will continue and due to the cyclonic circulation present over Southcentral parts of Bay of Bengal, heat wave conditions will not expand further.

In fact, heat will diminish from parts of Telangana and Chhattisgarh as day temperatures will settle below normal. Parts of Vidarbha may witness heat wave conditions due to their geographical location. But it will not be extreme heat wave.

[Marathi] पूर्व मॉन्सूनमुळे विदर्भ, तेलंगाणा आणि छातीडगढला उषातेच्या लाट पासून सुटका मिळेल

heat wave in India

Good rains to continue in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and parts of rest Northeast India

The largest contribution in terms of rain during the pre-Monsoon season comes from Northeast India, as about 40% of the rainfall during this season is recorded only from this region, with Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya being the major contributors.

Starting right from March to April, this pre-Monsoon season, the northeastern states have been performing poorly, barring Nagaland and Tripura that managed to receive near normal rains. Rest all other states are currently suffering from large rain deficiency.

However, May began on a good note and some improvement was observed, especially after the arrival of extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani. Since that time, winds have changed direction and continuous rains are being witnessed by the northeastern states of India. This has also led to slight reduction in the deficiency.

Have a look at the current rainfall status over the northeastern states:

Now since the last two days, fairly widespread moderate rain and thundershower activities with few heavy showers are occurring over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya. These states witnessed more than normal rains in the last 48 hours.

Rest states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura witnessed only light to moderate rains. The reason for continuous weather activities over Northeast India is the flow of southerly/southwesterly winds and the presence of a cyclonic circulation over Southcentral Bay of Bengal. Along with this, the cyclonic circulation over Bihar is also enhancing rains over the northeastern states.

Now the coming one week is also going to be full of pre-Monsoon weather activities with varying intensities. Rains will be more in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya. Meanwhile, only scattered weather activities will occur in parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Moreover, even after a week full of rains, the deficiency of the region will not be able get covered up fully, only marginal improvement will be seen.

Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Sikar and Bikaner to witness dust storm and rains

In the wake of an induced cyclonic circulation over parts of Rajasthan, since the last three days, pre-Monsoon weather activities in the form of dust storm followed by rain and thundershowers are occurring over many parts of Rajasthan.

In fact, major cities of Rajasthan such as Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Kota witnessed good amount of dust storm accompanied with strong winds and thundershowers during the last 24 hours. Rest places like Churu, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Bikaner, Sri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh also observed these weather activities.

Moreover, due to these pre-Monsoon weather activities, temperatures which were above 40˚C have subsided. And the places that were reeling under heat wave conditions with maximum temperatures settling near 45˚C have come and now maximums are settling near 40˚C or less, leading to abatement of heat wave.

Therefore, we expect these pre-Monsoon weather activities to continue over most parts of Rajasthan for the coming three days. Intensity may increase in some parts today and tomorrow. But from May 15, as the weather systems will move away eastwards, weather will start clearing up from Rajasthan.

May 16 onwards, winds will once again change, and weather will almost become dry. Then, due to dry weather, temperatures will start rising and thereafter, heat wave may make a comeback in few parts of the state.

Pre-Monsoon rains to pick up pace in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Chennai to witness thunderstorms

Now after a gap of two three days, pre-Monsoon weather activities will once again resume over many parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. These weather activities will occur in association with the formation of a cyclonic circulation over interior parts of Kerala and a trough extending up to Comorin area.

Therefore, we expect, on and off rain and thundershower activities are likely to occur in parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu during the next three to four days. Even though intensity of these weather activities will not be very high but still few moderate spells are possible over many places of both these states.

However, Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry including Chennai, Thanjavur, Karaikal, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam will remain almost dry with high day temperatures. But light thunderstorm activity may still affect few of these places.

Thus, we can say that, pre-Monsoon activities are going to pick up pace in southern parts of the country once again. Most affected areas will be interior parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In fact, as rains will not be heavy, flood like situations will be ruled out and these rains will be beneficial for the crops.
