The increasing pollution levels cause deteriorating consequences not only to the environment but also to human life. It affects human lungs and kidneys and causes several breathing ailments including Asthma, dyspnea, chest pain, chronic bronchitis and other cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders.

While air pollution in India is one of the major health hazards, other factors that risks a person’s lungs causing respiratory illness is the wide consumption of cigarettes, tobacco and other allied products like ‘guthka’, ‘pan masala’.

However, a health conscious step has been taken by the Punjab Government on Thursday when the state Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal ordered a ban on the manufacture, storage, sale or distribution of tobacco or nicotine containing food products for a year with immediate effect.

The ban is also applicable on processed, flavored, scented, chewing tobacco, irrespective of the fact they unpackaged, packaged or sold as one or separate products.

Moreover, chewing of Gutkha, Pan Masala and other tobacco containing products were a compelling health issue and an invitation to deadly diseases especially related to mouth and throat.

This prohibition has been taken by the Government of Punjab in respect of the Supreme Court’s orders. The highest court of India has observed that to avoid the ban on the sale of gutkha, the manufacturing companies are selling tobacco free pan masalas with flavored chewing tobacco in single sachets.
