After the grand launch of record-breaking 104 satellites, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is once again in news. The organization has custom-built the world’s third largest Hypersonic Wind Tunnel.

On March 20, ISRO commissioned two main facilities including a hypersonic wind tunnel and a shock tunnel at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram. After the US and Russia, this will be the world’s third largest hypersonic wind tunnel.

ISRO chairperson, Kiran Kumar said that such a venture will be beneficial in giving adequate data for the country’s design and development of current and future space transportation systems. He further added that commissioning these facilities on our own land also symbolizes our inbuilt competencies, especially when the technology aid is constrained from outside. The launch has further strengthened country's goal of 'Made in India'.

The main objective of the indigenously designed, the 1-meter Hypersonic Wind Tunnel and a 1-meter Shock Tunnel is to study the effects of air flowing past a solid object. Moreover, the Hypersonic Wind Tunnel is dedicated to and named after ISRO’s former chairman Satish Dhawan.

These facilities will also help in the aerothermodynamics characterization of advanced space transportation systems.

Furthermore, in the coming days, ISRO is also planning to launch a few big missions like the Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV), Two Stage To Orbit (TSTO) rockets, air-breathing propulsion systems, and the human space flight program for the future.
