Weather Forecast for May 20: Roanu to become severe cyclone, heatwave in Delhi, Gujarat

May 19, 2016 6:41 PM |

The cyclonic storm Roanu in northwest Bay of Bengal has intensified further and cloud configuration indicates that it may turn into severe cyclone anytime now.

At the present, the system is moving in northeast direction along and off the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coast.

The system is posing intense threat to the coastal areas of Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur that will see very heavy to extremely heavy rains.

Squally winds of 60-80 kmph even exceeding 100 kmph can be seen blowing over these areas.

As the system moves further, coastal parts of Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata will also see some heavy showers.

The cyclonic storm is likely to make landfall over Bangladesh during next 48 hours. In this process, it will also give heavy rains over northeastern states of Lower Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Not only this, peripherals of the system will also bring light rain over Interior Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand and few pockets of Chhattisgarh.

While down south, heavy rains have vacated Peninsular India but sky will remain cloudy due to the remnants of the system.

Hot and humid weather will again make a comeback over Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu including Chennai on friday.

Meanwhile, Northwest and Central India including Delhi and West Madhya Pradesh are reeling under the grip of severe heatwave to heatwave conditions.

Rajasthan and Gujarat are the hottest regions battling extremely hot weather with day maximums reaching 50°C.

Even hilly states are bearing the brunt of heatwave as temperatures over several places are settling above 30°C.

However, a cyclonic circulation has developed over Punjab and adjoining Rajasthan. While another feeble circulation is over Southeast Madhya Pradesh. A trough can also be seen running between these two systems across Delhi and Haryana.

Though this trough may trigger some isolated dust storm but will not be able to bring any relief from the hot weather at least for next 3-4 days.
