Weather Forecast for Jan 1: Winter chill to grip North and East India, Rain in Chennai

December 31, 2016 5:20 PM |

The Western Disturbance is over Jammu and Kashmir and will only bring isolated rain and snow over the higher reaches of the state.

Now a cyclonic circulation is over Rajasthan and Haryana, while another circulation is seen over Jharkhand and adjoining West Bengal. Both the systems have changed the wind pattern over entire northern and Indo-Gangetic plains. With this, dense fog will continue to grip most parts of North and East India.

Now this, persistent fog cover will not let the maximum temperatures increase that may lead to cold day conditions over several parts of Uttar Pradesh and few parts of Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.
Increased moisture can also result in rain and thundershowers over Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal leading to further drop in day maximums.

Meanwhile, Central India will continue with dry and clear weather conditions on Sunday.

Down south, light rain and thundershowers are likely over parts of Coastal Tamil Nadu including Chennai on Sunday on account of the trough extending along the equator and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal. This will also intensify rains over Andaman and Nicobar Islands with some heavy showers.
