Monsoon Forecast for Aug 18, 2018: Flood in Gujarat, Kerala; Heavy rain in Coastal Karnataka, Konkan & Goa

The axis of Monsoon trough is at present passing through Bhuj, Nagpur, Durg, Gopalpur and then towards North Bay of Bengal.

As a result, Monsoon remained vigorous over South Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, parts of Telangana and South Tamil Nadu during last 24 hours. Meanwhile, active Monsoon conditions were witnessed over Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Konkan & Goa and Gujarat region.

Major rainfall contribution came from Valparai in Tamil Nadu that recorded 207 mm of rain, followed by Madikeri 178 mm and Yavatmal 176 mm.

As on August 16, the countrywide cumulative rainfall deficiency stood -8%. At the moment, South India is the only pocket that is rain surplus by 10%, while East & Northeast India is the highest rain deficient pocket at -27%, followed by Northwest India at -4% and Central India at -6%.

During next 24 hours, vigorous Monsoon conditions will prevail over Gujarat region leading to localized flooding in many parts. Southeast Rajasthan and Southwest Madhya Pradesh may also see heavy to very showers.

We do not anticipate any respite from ongoing Kerala floods as active Monsoon conditions will persist over the state along with Coastal Karnataka, Konkan & Goa and rest of Gujarat causing moderate to heavy rainfall with one or two very heavy spells.
 
Meanwhile, normal Monsoon rains are expected over Uttarakhand, rest of Madhya Pradesh, parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, northeastern states and South Tamil Nadu, while it will remain subdued over the rest of the country.
